Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of the centrality of the threefold orders of bishop, priest and deacon to Anglicanism, deacons have been virtually invisible in the contemporary Church of England. 'Inferior Office?' is the first complete history of this neglected portion of theclergy, tracing the church's changing theology of the diaconate from the Ordinal of 1550 to the present day. Francis Young skilfully overturns the widely held belief that before the twentieth century, the diaconate was merely a brief and nominal period of probation for priests, revealing how it became an integral part of the Elizabethan defence of conformity and exploring the diverse range of ministries assumed by lifelong deacons in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Lifelong deacons often belonged to a marginalised 'lower class' of the clergy that has since been forgotten, an oversight of considerable importance to the wider social history of the clergy that is corrected in this volume. 'Inferior Office?' tells the story of persistent calls for the revival of a distinctive diaconate within the Victorian Church of England and situates the institution of deaconesses and later revival of the distinctive diaconate for women, as well as subsequent developments, within their wider historical context. Set against this backdrop, Young presents a balanced case both for and against the further development of a distinctive diaconate today, offering much to further discussion and debate amongst clergy of the Church of England and all those with an interest in the rich tapestry of its history.

Download or read book For Such a Time as this written by Church of England. House of Bishops. Working Party and published by Church House Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Such a Time as This takes a radical look at the ministry of Deacons in the Church. It brings biblical, theological and ecumenical perspectives to bear on a ministry that many believe has not yet realised its full potential. Diakonia is reinterpreted in the light of recent biblical research as fundamental commissioning for ministry - one that expresses the essential nature of the whole Church and underlies all ordained ministry. Deacons are seen as go-between or link persons in the mission space between the Church´s liturgy and the needy world. This report of a Working Party of the House of Bishops, set up by the General Synod, also comments on the implications for lay ministry and proposes a concrete ´job description´ or ministerial profile for a renewed diaconate, one that is not merely transitional to the priesthood. The Report argues that the Diaconate comes into its own at times of social change and cultural crisis and that the time is now right to renew the diaconate for the sake of mission.

Book Priest of the Church or Priest of a Church

Download or read book Priest of the Church or Priest of a Church written by Noel Cox and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of new forms of ministry, lay and ordained, has included worker-priests, now found in the Anglican Communion in a related form variously called Self-Supporting Ministry (SSM) or Non-Stipendiary Ministry (NSM). This book focuses on one of the most recent developments, the creation of Ordained Local Ministry. After chapters that consider preliminary questions of the nature of ministry, such as authority in the church and Holy Orders, Noel Cox argues that the crucial distinction between these and other forms of ministry is that the Ordained Local Minister (OLM) is overtly ordained specifically for a given locality (variously defined); they are a deacon or priest for a specific church, parish, benefice, or deanery, rather than of the universal church. Their introduction inevitably raises difficult ecclesiological questions, which Cox examines.
