Book excerpt: The caress of fabrics, the sheen of metal, the brittle luminosity of glass -- Dutch genre painters of the Golden Age were so skilled at mimicking the appearance of things that their largely imaginary domestic scenes are utterly convincing pictures of life as it was once lived. The contemporary viewer enters this world of make-believe as eagerly as Dorothy stepped into the land of Oz, with a complete trust in the fitness and accuracy of the illusion. Now, four eminent art historians reveal the trick behind this illusion and give us insight into the social reality that animates the deception. We learn why domestic interiors were a favorite subject for seventeenth-century Dutch artists and why buyers snatched up these paintings before their varnish dried. And we come to understand why these images of home and family, the earliest in the history of art, still speak to us three hundred years later in a voice as fresh and powerful as when they first appeared. This is the story of an art that echoed and shaped the ideals of an emerging nation -- a sensitive portrait of the painted fictions that laid the ground for our modern concept of "home" as the compass of our true selves. Book excerpt: "The seventeenth century in the Northern Netherlands was a period that saw the widespread 'domestication' of easel pictures, when paintings were acquired in significant numbers by a broad cross-section of society as a means of decorating the home. This is the first extended study to look at the role and function of paintings and other works of art in Dutch homes of the seventeenth century. In what numbers were paintings dispersed throughout the various rooms of the house? Were certain subjects regarded as more appropriate than others for display in a particular room? In what arrangements were paintings hung on the walls and how did this affect the way in which they were apprehended? A wide range of contemporary sources are drawn upon, including estate inventories and other archival material, published texts on art, architecture and social manners, and images of the domestic interior. In one chapter a close analysis is made of a small number of individual inventories, which are fully transcribed in the appendices, investigating the motivations that lie behind the display of works of art and their relationship to other furnishings."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Pictures within Pictures in Nineteenth Century Britain

Download or read book Pictures within Pictures in Nineteenth Century Britain written by Catherine Roach and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Repainting the work of another into one?s own canvas is a deliberate and often highly fraught act of reuse. This book examines the creation, display, and reception of such images. Artists working in nineteenth-century London were in a peculiar position: based in an imperial metropole, yet undervalued by their competitors in continental Europe. Many claimed that Britain had yet to produce a viable national school of art. Using pictures-within-pictures, British painters challenged these claims and asserted their role in an ongoing visual tradition. By transforming pre-existing works of art, they also asserted their own painterly abilities. Recognizing these statements provided viewers with pleasure, in the form of a witty visual puzzle solved, and with prestige, in the form of cultural knowledge demonstrated. At stake for both artist and audience in such exchanges was status: the status of the painter relative to other artists, and the status of the viewer relative to other audience members. By considering these issues, this book demonstrates a new approach to images of historic displays. Through examinations of works by J.M.W. Turner, John Everett Millais, John Scarlett Davis, Emma Brownlow King, and William Powell Frith, this book reveals how these small passages of paint conveyed both personal and national meanings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In looking at the history of collecting, one may be excused for regarding it as an activity in which, traditionally, women have shown little interest or in which they have not been involved. As the present volume shows, women—particularly aristocratic women—not only resisted this discrimination through the ages, but also built important collections and used them to their own advantage, in order to make statements about their lineage, power, cultural heritage or religious preferences. That is not to say that there was not an increasing number of middle-class women who became draughtswomen, painters and natural scientists and who found it equally beneficial for their chosen profession to collect. In every case, the female collector chose to collect and what to collect; she chose how and where to present the collection and she also decided when to dispose of objects, thereby occasionally taking on a curatorial role. Women have been seen as gatherers of furnishings, jewellery, dress and objects of domestic life. This third volume in the Collecting & Display series of conference proceedings challenges such perceptions through the detailed analysis of different types of collecting by women from the early modern period onwards; it thus seeks to give a voice to a group of important female collectors from the sixteenth to the early nineteenth century whose importance for the history of collecting has not yet, or not sufficiently, been acknowledged.
