Book excerpt: Link Denham needs a job. Any job. When he's offered the position of navigator on board the leaky, rickety Glamorgan, he takes it without asking too many questions. The destination? A planet that has barely been contacted in two hundred years, in a dystopic system, isolated from the rest of the galaxy. What he thought would be a simple job quickly turns into something far more complicated, as he finds himself embroiled in a complex web of treachery, double-crossing and alien politics. And what of this infamous machine the natives have, which can replicate anything put inside . . . ? Murray Leinster was a prolific figure in pulp fiction, writing short stories and novels across many genres. The Duplicators is a science fiction romp in his characteristic style, and a wonderful example of 1960s pulp science fiction.

Book Dissident Legacies of Samizdat Social Media Activism

Download or read book Dissident Legacies of Samizdat Social Media Activism written by Piotr Wciślik and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-23 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the dissident imaginary of samizdat activists, the political culture they created, and the pivotal role that culture had in sustaining the resilience of the oppositional movement in Poland between 1976 and 1990. This unlicensed print culture has been seen as one of the most emblematic social worlds of dissent. Since the Cold War, the audacity of harnessing obsolete print technology known as samizdat to break the modern monopoly of information of the party-state has fascinated many, yet this book looks beyond the Cold War frame to reappraise its historical novelty and significance. What made that culture resilient and rewarding, this book argues, was the correspondence between certain set of ideas and media practices: namely, the form of samizdat social media, which both embodied and projected the prefigurative philosophy of political action, asserting that small forms of collective agency can have a transformative effect on public life here and now, and are uniquely capable of achieving a democratic new beginning. This prefigurative vision of the transition from communism had a fundamental impact on the broader oppositional movement. Yet, while both the rise of Solidarity and the breakthrough of 1989 seemed to do justice to that vision, both pivotal moments found samizdat social media activists making history that was not to their liking. Back in the day, their estrangement was overshadowed by the main axis of contention between the society and the state. Foregrounding the internal controversies they protagonized, this book adds nuance to our understanding of the broader legacy of dissent and its relevance for the networked protests of today.

Book excerpt: Taodore, Michael, Alexander, Weaver, Lionel, Richard and Adam were finally away from Markum, free to live their lives. With all of his roof tops and windows in his past, Taodore finally had the love, freedom, and family he longed for. With his son Grayson born, his next child on the way, and his mind and body beginning to heal, he finally felt safe. But that sensation was quickly lost as he fought side-by-side with his best friend to save his family from the object that had invaded his new home. As the others tried to get to Alex and Tad, realizing that the Facility was not willing to let them be free, they fought together to get to them. After opening the door to the compound room and not sensing them, not seeing them, their worst fears were of Taodore and Alexander sacrificing themselves to save the rest of them. As Jared and Jessie search for their brother in the rubble, they vowed with the others that they would band together as Taodore had wanted and free others of their kind. The Pack's revenge; go back and shut the Facility down, free others of their kind that were willing to fight by their side, and bring the hope the stories of the prodigal son gave to the children of the Facility. As the Facility continually returns to Larkin's home to stop them, the Pack formulates as a team of sources and revisit where Taodore was created and kept, to fight for the one thing Taodore always wanted, for every one of his kind to be freed and the Facility stopped for good.

Book Venus Equilateral Sci Fi Series

Download or read book Venus Equilateral Sci Fi Series written by George O. Smith and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-26 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Venus Equilateral is a series of science fiction short stories concerning the Venus Equilateral Relay Station, an interplanetary communications hub located at the L4 Lagrangian point of the Sun-Venus system. Venus Equilateral is a space station three miles long and one mile in diameter that serves as a communications relay between Venus, Earth, and Mars whenever interference from the Sun prevents line-of-sight communication between them. Venus Equilateral was formed out of a nickel-iron asteroid that was moved into Venus' L4 point. At the time the stories take place, the asteroid has been completely reworked, resulting in a burnished steel cylinder with a large docking port at one end and a bank of communications dishes at the other. Most of the stories feature Dr. Donald A. Channing, Director of Communications at Venus Equilateral; Walter Franks, Beam Control Engineer; and Arden Westland, Channing's secretary turned fiancée turned wife. The typical plot of a Venus Equilateral story consists of the station's engineers inventing new devices that allow them to solve the story problem.
