Book Digital Transformation of the Design Construction and Management Processes of the Built Environment

Download or read book Digital Transformation of the Design Construction and Management Processes of the Built Environment written by Bruno Daniotti and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book focuses on the development of methods, interoperable and integrated ICT tools, and survey techniques for optimal management of the building process. The construction sector is facing an increasing demand for major innovations in terms of digital dematerialization and technologies such as the Internet of Things, big data, advanced manufacturing, robotics, 3D printing, blockchain technologies and artificial intelligence. The demand for simplification and transparency in information management and for the rationalization and optimization of very fragmented and splintered processes is a key driver for digitization. The book describes the contribution of the ABC Department of the Polytechnic University of Milan (Politecnico di Milano) to R&D activities regarding methods and ICT tools for the interoperable management of the different phases of the building process, including design, construction, and management. Informative case studies complement the theoretical discussion. The book will be of interest to all stakeholders in the building process - owners, designers, constructors, and faculty managers - as well as the research sector.

Book excerpt: Everybody has been in Milan, but who knows Milan? The traveller in search of the picturesque and mediæval sees nothing to arrest him—except comfortable hotels—in a city which seems to tell only of yesterday. A glance at the Cathedral, at St. Ambrogio, at the most famous of the pictures, and he hurries on. Yet a little longer stay reveals a wealth of artistic interest in the many fine churches, in the rich galleries and museums, and much also that is worth learning even in the outward aspect of the city in the present day. The historic buildings have mostly fallen, the old crooked ways have given place to broad thoroughfares, the picturesque life of the past has been smothered by the sombre bustle of modern commercialism. But her heritage of beauty is to some extent inalienable. She remains always Italian. Colour and atmosphere lend an indestructible charm even to her modernity. The warm brick of the buildings against the limpid blue sky, the gold and grey of sunshine and shadow, the shining canals that border some of the further streets with a still and pensive melancholy, make a lovely and characteristic harmony still, as in the days of the Quattrocentist artists who painted them in the backgrounds of their Madonnas and San Roccos. And there are some old xivstreets left, mostly in the heart of the city, such as the Via del Pesce and the Via Tre Alberghi, long cobbled alleys ribboned with triple lines of pavement, where the tall houses and bowed-out balconies of curious ironwork, rusted by age and weather, if they cannot remember the days of Milan's earlier glory, must have known at least something of the sad centuries of bondage which followed, before they shook to the roar of the Cinque Giornate sixty years ago. The compass of this small volume has made it impossible to tell otherwise than summarily of the great past of this city and of her artistic riches to-day. I have had to pass over, or barely mention, many noteworthy things.

Book excerpt: To most Italians, Milan is the unofficial capital of Italy and arguably the most interesting city in the country, where old and new meet in an ever changing relationship. An engaging mix. Milan cannot claim the opulent and breathtaking beauty of Rome nor the Renaissance glories of Florence but Milan has its own charms – and certainly enough to keep you entertained for a weekend. In fact, Milan is, arguably, the most interesting city in Italy, where old and new meet in an ever changing relationship. Milan is both elegant and vulgar, technology-driven and full of old world charm, money-obsessed and genteel, brassy and inviting. Milan is a curious, engaging mix. To most Italians, Milan is the unofficial capital of the country. Milan is Italy’s powerhouse, where money is made. Money brings people, people create vibe and energy: Milan is the place where “things happen”. Milan is internationally famous for its fashion and design, of course. But there is much more to see and enjoy in this industrious, hard working city. Here are a few personal suggestions – places I like, not necessarily the most celebrated. This is a guide to Milan, for a visit lasting two, three or more days. There are extensive descriptions and photos of the attractions: museums, churches, nightlife and other attractions. There are descriptions on how to get to Milan, on driving and parking in the city, useful info to stay there. There are reviews of several restaurants. The guide is divided in sections covering single days or half days, so you can combine several sections depending on the length of your stay and your preference of what o see.

Book Music in the Collective Experience in Sixteenth Century Milan

Download or read book Music in the Collective Experience in Sixteenth Century Milan written by Christine Suzanne Getz and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renaissance music, like its sister arts, was most often experienced collectively. While it was possible to read Renaissance polyphony silently from a music manuscript or print, improvise alone, or perform as a soloist, the very practical nature of Renaissance music defied individualism. The reading and improvisation of polyphony was most frequently achieved through close co-operation, and this mutual endeavour extended beyond the musicians to include the society to which it is addressed. In sixteenth-century Milan, music, an art traditionally associated with the court and cathedral, came to be appropriated by the old nobility and the new aristocracy alike as a means of demonstrating social primacy and newly acquired wealth. As class mobility assumed greater significance in Milan and the size of the city expanded beyond its Medieval borders, music-making became ever more closely associated with public life. With its novel structures and diverse urban spaces, sixteenth-century Milan offered an unlimited variety of public performance arenas. The city's political and ecclesiastical authorities staged grand processions, church services, entertainments, and entries aimed at the propagation of both church and state. Yet the private citizen utilized such displays as well, creating his own miniature spectacle in a visual and an aural imitation of the ecclesiastical and political panoply of the age. Using archival documents, music prints, manuscripts and contemporary writing, Getz examines the musical culture of sixteenth-century Milan via its life within the city's most influential social institutions to show how fifteenth-century courtly traditions were adapted to the public arena. The book considers the relationship of the primary cappella musicale, including those of the Duomo, the court of Milan, Santa Maria della Scala, and Santa Maria presso San Celso, to the sixteenth-century institutions that housed them. In addition, the book investigates the musician's role as an actor and a functionary in the political, religious, and social spectacles produced by the Milanese church, state, and aristocracy within the city's diverse urban spaces. Furthermore, it establishes a context for the numerous motets, madrigals, and lute intabulations composed and printed in sixteenth-century Milan by examining their function within the urban milieu in which they were first performed. Finally, it musically documents Milan's transformation from a ducal state dominated by provincial traditions into a mercantile centre of international acclaim. Such an important study in Italian Renaissance music will therefore appeal to anyone interested in the culture of Renaissance Italy.
