Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duke's Marriage, Vol. 2 of 3 In one of the narrow thoroughfares branching out of the High Street at Lewbury stood a house having a brass plate on the door with the name Hopkins. There was nothing to distinguish this 23 articular house from others in the same row, which were ugly square blocks, devoid of any architectural ornament They all had six rooms apiece, and were rented by respectable artisans or widows who took in lodgers when they could get them. When they could not, cards were put in the windows to tempt the homeless with, offers of rooms furnished or unfurnished. It more often happened that the houses could show cards than lodgers. Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: My dear sister Clara, London society is so much more complicated than I could ever have known! Every night is a different ball or assembly, and a different swirl of glittering jewels and rustling gowns. Though I fear I am making social blunders left and right I am having some measure of success in my (or rather, Mother's) objective. Mother is beside herself with glee at the attentions I have been receiving from a few gentlemen she finds supremely suitable as husband material. But my dearest sister, it is so hard for me to even look at any gentleman but a certain duke, who, if I may confess, makes my heart beat so that I fear it can be seen across a ballroom. He is James Langdon, the Duke of Wentworth, and though I may sound dramatic, he makes me feel as no man ever has before. But I must push these feelings away. I sometimes hear whispers about his dark past, and he is quietly called the Dangerous Duke. Oh Clara! I am secretly overjoyed that he may love me, and at the same time terrified of his attentions. I have waited so long for my true love, and now I must resist him to protect my heart. If only I knew how to proceed… Your devoted sister, Sophia

Book Never Marry a Scandalous Duke

Download or read book Never Marry a Scandalous Duke written by Renee Ann Miller and published by Zebra Books. This book was released on 2022-06-28 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thoroughly roguish nobleman and a devoted lady entomologist have absolutely nothing in common—or do they? Love is far from scientific when it truly blooms . . . In the eyes of the ton, Lady Sara Elsmere is so firmly on the shelf, she might as well be nailed in place. Not that Sara minds. She is far more concerned about her study of butterflies than society’s gossip. Of course, it’s also true that the nervous laughter that ruined Sara’s debut—and every social event thereafter—is a bit embarrassing. She can hardly help it—men are quite nerve-wracking. Except for one: the rake who pulls her into a dark room during a costume ball and kisses her senseless. He doesn’t make her titter, he makes her burn . . . Ian McAllister, the Duke of Dorchester, is perfectly satisfied to remain a rogue for the rest of his days. But when he finds he has kissed the wrong shepherdess, albeit a decidedly luscious one, he’s faced with a dilemma. His indiscretion with an innocent may cost him a lucrative business arrangement—and his two scapegrace wards need a maternal influence they can’t scare away. Promising Sara the use of her dowry to fund her studies seals the pair’s businesslike deal. But as they embark on their life together, they discover that their mutual attraction has sparked a desire not easily tamed—and certain feelings each of them are surprised to own. Can their matrimonial experiment possibly end in real love? “A delightful romance filled with period ambiance . . . and a charming supporting cast.” —Publishers Weekly on Never Deceive a Viscount

Book The Duke s Secret Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Duke s Secret Classic Reprint written by Charlotte M. Braeme and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duke's Secret Her first trouble; and the duchess does not bear it well. She looks troubled and anxious. It had always been a very easy matter for her to manage her husband, but this trouble concerned her son, and he was not quite so easy to manage. She looks like a picture just stepped from its frame; her dress of black velvet falls in royal folds, the lace on her head is costly enough for a queen, her white hands shine with gems. She is surrounded by magnificence of every kind. Yet on the white, impassive brow there are lines never seen before. My only son, she said to herself, the only hope of his race. My handsome, noble boy. There was passionate pain and passionate love in the voice as she uttered the words, for the proud, beautiful duchess loved her son with a force and intensity that love seldom reaches. She took up a book, scanned the pages, then replaced it. I must do it, she said to herself, wetter now than later in the day, when Herbert is about. He is so weak and so impressionable that if the girl cries he would not have the nerve to act so promptly. Oh, my son, my son 1 She touched a little silver gong that stood on the table by her side, and the next minute the footman entered the room. Tell Miss Wynter I wish to see her here, and at once, said her grace, and the messenger hastened to obey. Prompt obedience was part of that well-trained household. The duchess resumed her seat, and the frown on her fine face deepened. To think that I should have to speak on the matter, she said to herself. It is abhorrent to me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duke of Stockbridge: A Romance of Shays' Rebellion The Duke of Stockbridge was written by Mr. Edward Bellamy in 1879, at the request of the editor of a local paper in Great Harrington, Massachusetts. In the author's mind were already stirring the grave questions which he was soon to propound in Looking Backward; and when he undertook to write a romance of his native Berkshire Hills he chose, not unnaturally, the episode of the revolt of the debtor-farmers in 1786 against their harsh creditors and the oppressive State government. Although he wrote the story primarily for publication in an inconspicuous village paper, Mr. Bellamy was not the artist to allow the work to fall below the standard of his literary conscience; and as the tale grew upon his hands he soon was putting into it the rarest quality of his style, of his genuineness, and of his imagination, as well as the industry of his painstaking research. When the story was completed he refused the offers of publishers, and determined to delay its appearance as a book until after the publication of Looking Backward, which now had taken pressing shape in his mind. The Duke of Stockbridge was the projection of his sympathies into the forms of art; but he knew that, if published then, it would be received merely as a novel, and its depth of meaning would be perceived only by few. Therefore it seemed better that this tale should wait until he had given, in his next book, his formal and unmistakable definition of proper human relationship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marriage Therefore to treat such a subject with authority requires a pro found and sympathetic knowledge Of the social conditions and inner lives Of men in other times, classes and countries, as well as our own to speak of it with sincerity and acceptance demands a habit of mind finely tempered of frankness and delicacy - and a power of exact and noble expression which is the peculiar heritage of the poet. It follows then that I must renounce the hope of expressing my meaning in a manner which will cause it to be gladly received by all who hear me. I must be content with sincerity; and for that I ask a hearing, patient, and as sincere as I shall try to make my utterance.
