Book excerpt: "Terrific storytelling with lots of wit, derring-do, and tugging on the heartstrings!" - Grace Burrowes, NYT and USA Today Bestselling Author "Locke seamlessly blends hints from classics like The Count of Monte Cristo, Pride and Prejudice, and Arthurian legend into an utterly enjoyable Regency romance." - Publishers Weekly BookLife Prize From RITA® Finalist and USA Today Bestselling Author Margaret Locke comes The Legendary Duke, the second in her Put Up Your Dukes Regency historical romance series. For a Knight to win the Princess, he first must slay his dragons… A tragic event in his youth led Gavin Knight’s mother to whisk him to Rome, where he lived a simple but secluded life—until, on her deathbed, she revealed who he truly was: the Duke of Cortleon. Now twenty-nine, Gavin has returned to England, determined to learn what happened all those years ago. Despite charming his fellow lords and ladies alike, the new Duke disregards any notion of nuptials, as his honor first demands resolution--and retribution. Then he meets Lady Elinor Greene. For seven years, renowned beauty Elinor has refused all proposals, fearing marriage would curb her freedom. But when her family falls on hard times, Nelle must sacrifice herself to save them by marrying a man of means. A wealthy widower seems the logical choice, a passionless union perfect. Until she meets the Duke of Cortleon, and learns one Knight can be legendary. Soon Gavin and Elinor must each decide which quest is worth more: that for honor, or that for love... ___________________ While second in the series, The Legendary Duke can easily be read as a standalone novel - especially because this story turned out to take place before that of The Demon Duke (oops). Loosely based on the Arthurian legend Gawain and the Green Knight, The Legendary Duke provides adventure, mystery, desire, and betrayal in this satisfying blend of Regency historical romance with a hint of medieval flavor...and Arthurian Easter eggs pop up throughout! ____________________ Category: Regency Historical romance (and my editor Tessa says, historical romantic suspense!) Book excerpt: A Regency time-travel romance in which a modern-day Austenite's ultimate dream comes true when she lands in the arms of a Regency duke, only to learn some fantasies aren't all they're cracked up to be when he proves less than a Prince Charming... "Literary magic takes widowed Jane Austen fan Eliza James to Regency England for a chance to win the heart of the likewise-bereaved Deveric Mattersley, Duke of Claremont, in this charming time-travel romance. Despite the unlikely premise, the unforced unfolding of this magically-created romance is refreshing...the author has effectively captured the emotional essence of a historical romance and created an engaging love story that will leave readers eager for more of the series." - Publishers Weekly BookLife "A Matter of Time should be on every fantasy, paranormal, contemporary and Regency romance reader's "to read" list...I would definitely recommend this novel - you will be charmed, captivated, have a few good laughs and shed a few tears as you cheer Eliza and Dev on to find their happy every after ending." - Marsha, KeeperBookshelf.com "I fell in love with this book, just as I did with the Jane Austen classics. There's a new Mr. Darcy in town." - Annie, ARC reader, reviewer for The Write Review and ChickLitPlus.com _________________________________________________________________________ Can a man with a past and a woman from the future forge a love for all time? Nobody would blame widowed doctoral student Eliza James for giving up on Happily Ever After; at twenty-nine, she's suffered more loss than most people do in a lifetime. But Eliza's convinced her own hero is still out there, waiting for her, just like in the beloved romance novels she devours. Every Jane Austen-loving girl deserves a Darcy, right? Only Eliza doesn't dream of a modern-day affair: she wants the whole Regency experience. When a magical manuscript thrusts her back two hundred years into the arms and life of one Deveric Mattersley, Duke of Claremont, however, Eliza realizes some fantasies aren't all they're cracked up to be, especially when her duke proves himself less than a Prince Charming. Convinced he's at fault for the death of his wife, Deveric Mattersley has no interest in women, much less marriage. Determined to atone for his sins, he decrees himself content to focus on running his family's estates, and on raising his son-until the mysterious Mrs. James appears. Who is she? What does she want? And why does she make Dev's blood run hot in a way no woman ever has? A charming time-travel Regency romance full of wit and humor, A Matter of Time reminds us that, like books, you can't judge people by their covers, and that love often comes when least expected. _________________________________________________________________________ 2016 HOLT Medallion Certificate of Merit winner for Best Paranormal and Best Book by a Virginia Author 2016 RONE Finalist for Best Paranormal Genre: Regency time travel Magic of Love Book 2: 365 pages

  • Publisher : Catapult

  • Pages : 176 pages

Download or read book Margaret the First written by Danielle Dutton and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Lit Hub Best Book of 2016 • One of Electric Literature's Best Novels of 2016 • An Entropy Best Book of 2016 “The duchess herself would be delighted at her resurrection in Margaret the First...Dutton expertly captures the pathos of a woman whose happiness is furrowed with the anxiety of underacknowledgment.” —Katharine Grant, The New York Times Book Review Margaret the First dramatizes the life of Margaret Cavendish, the shy, gifted, and wildly unconventional 17th–century Duchess. The eccentric Margaret wrote and published volumes of poems, philosophy, feminist plays, and utopian science fiction at a time when "being a writer" was not an option open to women. As one of the Queen's attendants and the daughter of prominent Royalists, she was exiled to France when King Charles I was overthrown. As the English Civil War raged on, Margaret met and married William Cavendish, who encouraged her writing and her desire for a career. After the War, her work earned her both fame and infamy in England: at the dawn of daily newspapers, she was "Mad Madge," an original tabloid celebrity. Yet Margaret was also the first woman to be invited to the Royal Society of London—a mainstay of the Scientific Revolution—and the last for another two hundred years. Margaret the First is very much a contemporary novel set in the past. Written with lucid precision and sharp cuts through narrative time, it is a gorgeous and wholly new approach to imagining the life of a historical woman. "In Margaret the First, there is plenty of room for play. Dutton’s work serves to emphasize the ambiguities of archival proof, restoring historical narratives to what they have perhapsalways already been: provoking and serious fantasies, convincing reconstructions, true fictions.”—Lucy Ives, The New Yorker “Danielle Dutton engagingly embellishes the life of Margaret the First, the infamousDuchess of Newcastle–upon–Tyne.” —Vanity Fair

The acclaimed Penhallow Dynasty series continues in this fresh, fun, funny tale! Life’s no bowl of cherries for Anthony Farr, the Duke of Radcliffe. Duty demands he remarry to provide a spare to go along with the heir — and eligible ladies keep trying to finagle him into a proposal. All he wants is to be a good father to his 8-year-old son, see the Duchess (his truly terrific pig) win first prize at the harvest fête, and stay single. Even if that makes him a Bad Duke. Maybe the Worst Duke in the World. Then Miss Jane Kent, a long-lost relation of the illustrious Penhallow family, arrives in the neighborhood and is promptly befriended by the Duke’s son. Jane, Anthony comes to realize, is smart and fun and also very kissable and dazzlingly desirable. Still, that’s not enough to melt his resistance to marrying again. He made a stern promise to himself and promises must, of course, be kept. But what if that’s just his head talking, and his heart . . . is saying something entirely different? “Delicious.” —Sarah MacLean, The Washington Post, on You May Kiss the Bride “…It's champagne in book form — bubbly, fun, and intoxicating far more quickly than one might anticipate.” —Entertainment Weekly

Book The Silver Swan

Download or read book The Silver Swan written by Sallie Bingham and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Shows us just how brave, rebellious, and creative this unique woman really was, and how her generosity benefits us to this day.” —Gloria Steinem In The Silver Swan, Sallie Bingham chronicles the notorious tobacco heiress who was perhaps the greatest modern woman philanthropist. Duke established her first foundation when she was twenty-one; cultivated friendships with Jackie Kennedy, Imelda Marcos, and Michael Jackson; flaunted interracial relationships; and adopted a thirty-two year-old woman she believed to be the reincarnation of her deceased daughter. Even though Duke was the subject of constant scrutiny, little beyond the tabloid accounts of her behavior has been publicly known. When her personal papers were made available, Sallie Bingham set out to discover her true identity. She found an alluring woman whose life was forged in the Jazz Age, who was not only an early war correspondent but also an environmentalist, a surfer, a collector of Islamic art, a savvy businesswoman who tripled her father’s fortune, and a major philanthropist with wide-ranging passions from dance to historic preservation to human rights. In The Silver Swan, Bingham dissects the stereotypes that have defined Duke’s story while also confronting the disturbing questions that cleave to her legacy. “Illuminating . . . Bingham is a generous biographer in this exacting, measured work.” —Publishers Weekly “The most significant, dramatic, and compelling biography of Doris Duke. . . . that will delight and inspire all readers concerned about a more humane future.” —Blanche Wiesen Cook, author of Eleanor Roosevelt (vols. I, II, III)

Book excerpt: He's looking for a duchess. She's looking for...well, anyone but him. Georgie Cleveland is well aware that true love exists. She may have even found it in the handsome young gentleman she's set her sights on. Unfortunately, her rival has the same designs on society's most sought-after poet. Now Georgie is forced to go to extremes to catch his eye. She could make him jealous, for example, by feigning interest in her sister's brother-in-law, the Duke of Roxborough. It is all for show, of course. Roxborough is far too dull for her tastes. So boring, so stodgy...yet, such a surprisingly passionate kisser. With Roxborough's new title comes more pressure than ever to marry. His mother has prospective wives lined up for him, all perfectly fitted for the role. Why then does he find himself saddled with the wide-eyed Georgie at every turn? He has no use for someone so frivolous, not with the responsibilities he has on his plate. He should help her find a husband to rid himself of her distractions, but that's easier said than done when it quickly becomes clear that her taste in husbands is abysmal. To make matters worse, she seems to have the oddest effect on him. The more she tells him how safe and predictable he is, the more he's tempted to kiss her senseless.

But no one warned him that a fiery and frustratingly strong-willed activist like Lady Beatrice Haven could find a way to get under his skin...and that he might enjoy it. Lady Beatrice is determined to never marry. Ever. She would much rather fight for the rights of women and provoke the darkly handsome Duke of Blackheath, even if he does claim to be forward-thinking. After all, dukes—even gorgeous ones—are the enemy. So why does she feel such enjoyment from their heated exchanges? But everything changes when Beatrice finds herself suddenly without fortune, a husband, or even a home. Now her future depends on the very man who sets her blood boiling. "Locke breaks down tropes--the popular jock and the thoughtful poet--and puts cracks in their shining armor with humor and insight...Blending romance with whimsical fantasy, Locke's story offers up a look at the expectations of youthful fancy vs. the realities of an adult love." - Library Journal _________________________________________________________________________ What would you do if you discovered the men you were dating were fictional characters you'd created long ago? Thirty-five-year-old Catherine Schreiber has shelved love for good. Keeping her ailing bookstore afloat takes all her time, and she's perfectly fine with that. So when several men ask her out in short order, she's not sure what to do ... especially since something about them seems eerily familiar. A startling revelation -- that these men are fictional characters she'd created and forgotten years ago -- forces Cat to reevaluate her world and the people in it. Because these characters are alive. Here. Now. And most definitely in the flesh. Her best friend, Eliza, a romance novel junkie craving her own Happily Ever After, is thrilled by the possibilities. The power to create Mr. Perfect -- who could pass that up? But can a relationship be real if it's fiction? Caught between fantasy and reality, Cat must decide which -- or whom -- she wants more. Blending humor with unusual twists, including a magical manuscript, a computer scientist in shining armor, and even a Regency ball, A Man of Character is a whimsical-yet-thought-provoking romantic comedy that tells a story not only of love, but also of the lengths we'll go for friendship, self-discovery, and second chances. ________________________________________________________________________ 2016 HOLT Medallion Certificate of Merit winner for Best First Book 2015 Lyra Winner for Best General Fiction Genre: Light paranormal chick lit / romantic comedy Magic of Love Book 1: 327 pages

Book Ezra Pound and Margaret Cravens

Download or read book Ezra Pound and Margaret Cravens written by Ezra Pound and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ezra Pound met Margaret Cravens in Paris in 1910 during one of his most creative and formative periods. Margaret Cravens, of Madison, Indiana, had come to Paris several years earlier to study piano and was drawn to the young Pound out of a shared interest in poetry and the arts. Their friendship began when she offered Pound generous financial support, which continued, unknown to anyone else, until June 1912, when she committed suicide in Paris, one year after her father's suicide in Indiana. Pound was deeply affected by her death, as was the poet H. D., who had recently come to know her. Pound's letters to Cravens, extensively annotated, are published here for the first time; her suicide note to him is also included. Ezra Pound and Margaret Cravens contains photographs and previously unpublished material by Pound and H.D., as well as an excerpt from H.D.'s autobiographical novel Asphodel, in which Cravens figures prominently. This portrait of a friendship provides insight into the literary achievements of Pound and H.D. and tells the unknown story of Margaret Cravens's tragic life.
