There were few people in the world the Duke of Rhuddlan could trust, least of all his scheming brother Nicholas. So when a spate of violence is perpetrated against people with a connection to the duke, Rhuddlan knows who is behind it. But how can he end this vicious campaign when Nick is backed by the King’s own son? Olivia Stone wants nothing more than to live quietly in her little cottage, but with a cruel suitor determined to possess her and an income that is steadily diminishing, she’s left with no choice but to appeal to her wealthy cousin—whom she’s never met—for assistance. Will he give it? Or will she be forced to marry a man she fears? When Rhuddlan knocks on Olivia’s door with a plan to help them both, she’s skeptical but sees no other option. Working together sparks a flame between them neither could have predicted, but when Nick discovers the relationship, he becomes determined to destroy their hope for happiness. Can Rhuddlan finally put an end to his brother’s devastation before someone is killed? Will Olivia still want him when she sees how ruthless he can be? This medium (3-4 hour read) novel is a steamy Regency romance with a happily ever after, no cliffhangers, and is part of a series that can be read in any order.

Book In Darkness and Secrecy

Download or read book In Darkness and Secrecy written by Neil L. Whitehead and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2004-06-03 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Darkness and Secrecy brings together ethnographic examinations of Amazonian assault sorcery, witchcraft, and injurious magic, or “dark shamanism.” Anthropological reflections on South American shamanism have tended to emphasize shamans’ healing powers and positive influence. This collection challenges that assumption by showing that dark shamans are, in many Amazonian cultures, quite different from shamanic healers and prophets. Assault sorcery, in particular, involves violence resulting in physical harm or even death. While highlighting the distinctiveness of such practices, In Darkness and Secrecy reveals them as no less relevant to the continuation of culture and society than curing and prophecy. The contributors suggest that the persistence of dark shamanism can be understood as a form of engagement with modernity. These essays, by leading anthropologists of South American shamanism, consider assault sorcery as it is practiced in parts of Brazil, Guyana, Venezuela, and Peru. They analyze the social and political dynamics of witchcraft and sorcery and their relation to cosmology, mythology, ritual, and other forms of symbolic violence and aggression in each society studied. They also discuss the relations of witchcraft and sorcery to interethnic contact and the ways that shamanic power may be co-opted by the state. In Darkness and Secrecy includes reflections on the ethical and practical implications of ethnographic investigation of violent cultural practices. Contributors. Dominique Buchillet, Carlos Fausto, Michael Heckenberger, Elsje Lagrou, E. Jean Langdon, George Mentore, Donald Pollock, Fernando Santos-Granero, Pamela J. Stewart, Andrew Strathern, Márnio Teixeira-Pinto, Silvia Vidal, Neil L. Whitehead, Johannes Wilbert, Robin Wright

Book excerpt: An American gothic... In the early 1990s, Tommy Morrison, a young roughneck from the hinterland of Jay, Oklahoma, burst onto the scene to become one of the most controversial fighters of his era. As an undefeated prospect with a crippling left hook, Morrison attracted plenty of attention (and criticism) from boxing insiders, but it was his starring role in Rocky V that propelled him to the brink of stardom-and ultimately lead to his tragic downfall. Handsome, eloquent, and powerful, Morrison parlayed a thrilling ringstyle and a homespun personality into genuine celebrity status throughout the midwest and southeast, where boxing rarely prospered. But his brush with Hollywood fame triggered an insatiable appetite for parties, liquor, and sex. When he was shockingly diagnosed with HIV in 1996, Morrison saw his life spiral out of control. His subsequent descent into drugs, prison, and conspiracy theories made Morrison headline material long after his glory days inside the ring had ended, and it transformed his story of a small-town success into one of the American Dream gone haywire. Throughout his career, Morrison had shown a rebellious streak and a knack for excess that sabotaged his talent; those same characteristics drove him to weave an alternative universe for himself, one where HIV did not cause AIDs, bigamy was legal, and he could teleport from danger at any moment. In The Duke: The Life and Lies of Tommy Morrison, Carlos Acevedo traces the tumultuous tale of Morrison from his days as a teenaged Toughman contestant, to his rise in the heavyweight division after defeating George Foreman, to his struggles with HIV and depression, to his farcical comeback in 2007, to his tragic death at forty-four, when his delusions finally caught up to him.

Book Amazing Decisions

Download or read book Amazing Decisions written by Dan Ariely and published by Hill and Wang. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dan Ariely, the New York Times bestselling author of Predictably Irrational, and illustrator Matt R. Trower present a playful graphic novel guide to better decision-making, based on the author’s groundbreaking research in behavioral economics, neuroscience, and psychology. The internationally renowned author Dan Ariely is known for his incisive investigations into the messy business of decision-making. Now, in Amazing Decisions, his unique perspective—informed by behavioral economics, neuroscience, and psychology—comes alive in the graphic form. The illustrator Matt R. Trower’s playful and expressive artwork captures the lessons of Ariely’s groundbreaking research as they explore the essential question: How can we make better decisions? Amazing Decisions follows the narrator, Adam, as he faces the daily barrage of choices and deliberations. He juggles two overlapping—and often contradictory—sets of norms: social norms and market norms. These norms inform our thinking in ways we often don’t notice, just as Adam is shadowed by the “market fairy” and the “social fairy,” each compelling him to act in certain ways. Good decision-making, Ariely argues, requires us to identify and evaluate the forces at play under different circumstances, leading to an optimal outcome. Amazing Decisions is a fascinating and entertaining guide to developing skills that will prove invaluable in personal and professional life.
