Book excerpt: "Spring focuses on the lute in Britain, but also includes two chapters devoted to continental developments: one on the transition from medieval to renaissance, the other on renaissance to baroque, and the lute in Britain is never treated in isolation. The book opens with "Learning the Fingerboard", a large section devoted to establishing a thorough knowledge of the guitar fingerboard through a systematic and rigorous study of scales and fingerboard harmony, which will lead to ease and fluency in sight-reading and will reduce the time needed to learn a repertoire piece. The following sections "Scales and Scale Studies", "Repeated Notes", "Slurs", "Harmony", "Arpeggios", "Melody with Accompaniment", "Counterpoint" and "Florid or Virtuoso Studies" each contain text and examples that connect material to fingering practices of composers and practice strategies to open a path to interpretive freedom in performance. Book Conjunctions of Mind Soul and Body from Plato to the Enlightenment

Download or read book Conjunctions of Mind Soul and Body from Plato to the Enlightenment written by Danijela Kambaskovic and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the nexus between the corporeal, emotional, spiritual and intellectual aspects of human life as represented in the writing of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Authors from different fields examine not only the question of the body and soul (or body and mind) but also how this question fits into a broader framework in the medieval and early modern period. Concepts such as gender and society, morality, sexuality, theological precepts and medical knowledge are a part of this broader framework. This discussion of ideas draws from over two thousand years of Western thought: from Plato in the fifth century BC and the fourth century Byzantine dialogues on the soul, to the philosophical and medical writings of the early 1700s. There are four sections to this book: each section is based on where the authors have found a conjunction between the body and mind/soul. The work begins with a section on text and self-perception, which focuses on creative output from the period. The second conjunction is human emotions which are described in their social contexts. The third is sex, where the human body and mind are traditionally believed to meet. The fourth section, Material Souls, engages with bodies and other material aspects of existence perceived, studied or utilised as material signs of emotional and spiritual activity.

Book Music for Elizabethan Lutes

Download or read book Music for Elizabethan Lutes written by John Milton Ward and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS IS WRONG - PLEASE SEE LONG COPY This work is a scholarly edition of a mid-sixteenth-century manuscript in the Osborn collection at the Beinecke Library in Yale. The manuscript comprises an important and hitherto unpublished collection of music for lute, gittern, and guitar, written in tabulature. John Ward, with scrupulousattention to detail, has transcribed this music into modern notation and has provided a substantial introduction and commentary. The material will be of obvious interest to lutenists, to whom a valuable body of music now becomes available. There is much, moreover, to interest literary historians of the period, with insights into the development of popular verse and music, particularly in connection with the use of balladtunes. Professor Ward has gained an international reputation for his work on lute music and on early dance and popular music. This important edition will be regarded as an original and distinguished contribution to Elizabethan Studies.
