Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dry Fly and Fast Water was written to fill a need created by the coming of the brown trout to America. The British flies and methods that followed it over here proved inapplicable. Therefore, it remained for fishing expert George La Branche to promulgate a new, distinctly American school of dry-fly angling. The proof of its validity is that today it is still widely practiced here. This remains one of the great classics of American fishing literature, covering everything from wonderfuldescriptions of fish behavior to details of the insects they feed on and the artificial flies that imitate those foods.

Book The Dry Fly and Fast Water

Download or read book The Dry Fly and Fast Water written by George Michel Lucien La Branche and published by Greycliff Publishing Company. This book was released on 1998 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time ever in the world of fly fishing, a classic work has been updated into a fully illustrated, modern format. This new volume of The Dry Fly and Fast Water The Dry Fly and Fast Water established George La Branche conservationist, angler, naturalist as a man ahead of his time. In this landmark work his instructions on reading the water and presentation (explaining such techniques as the bounce cast, line control, and 'creating a hatch'), and his descriptions of rise forms and how to read them are all as fresh today as they were more than eighty years ago. In fact, his discussion of fishing a dry fly on fast water heresy when he wrote it has not been improved upon in the modern literature. Any angler who reads this book whether rank novice or seasoned expert and applies La Branche's wisdom will catch more fish on the dry fly.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1914 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IV WHERE AND WHEN TO FISH The swift streams in the eastern part of the United States must, as a rule, be fished by wading. Where it is possible, because of the absence of trees and brush, to fish from the bank, the angler's form is silhouetted sharply against the background of sky, and, to overcome this disadvantage, he must retire some distance from the edge of the bank, or, if he wishes to come closer, must kneel or crouch to avoid being seen by the fish. By casting from the bank he will avoid the disturbance of the water necessarily made by entering it, and this is, of course, an advantage. On the other hand, he is closer to the surface of the stream while wading, in which position he is not so easily seen, which is also an advantage. Offsetting the latter, however, is the commotion made by his movements, which, no matter how deliberate, will make the trout nervous or apprehensive of approaching danger. If he has shown himself, even though the fish has been vigorously feed 87 ing, he might just as well abandon any attempt to induce a rise, because the trout, having been warned by his careless approach, will have scurried away. The danger of putting down a fish in swift water is not so great because the ripples sent in advance of the angler make little headway and travel no great distance against a strong current. To describe places where trout may be looked for under any and all circumstances, is practically impossible. Very often the fish will not be found where the angler thinks they should be. They are as full of notions and idiosyncrasies as anglers themselves, and one may hope to become familiar with their habitat in a general way only, and this after close study. I say "in a general way," because, while a big trout may...

Book Advanced Fly Fishing

Download or read book Advanced Fly Fishing written by Eugene F. Burns and published by Stackpole Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eugene Burns worked tirelessly and meticulously to research and understand the fundamentals of fly fishing. He questioned traditional fishing methods and ideas used for hundreds of years and honed in on subtle nuances most fishermen gloss over. He fundamentally changed fly fishing by revolutionizing casting with the Lazy S technique and introducing day-glo fluorescent materials to fly tying. “In every page of Advanced Fly Fishing the implied theme is plain,” writes Francis Sells, “each cast must embody all the techniques an angler knows or else he cannot realize the full potentialities of his fly, method and water.” From short and long casts to dry flies and spinners, Burns breaks new ground on all aspects of fly fishing. This is a perfect book for an experienced angler who wants to learn a few new techniques or a true beginner who wants to learn every aspect and angle of the sport.

Book excerpt: This is the definitive book on fly-tying, with thousands of fly patterns included for the enthusiast. Expert angler, fly tier, and author Terry Hellekson addresses everything from the history of fly-fishing around the world to the history of fly tying and fly-tying materials. Hellekson shares interviews with fly-tying greats of years past, along with the fascinating history and background of some of the popular individual flies, making this a great read. His colorful recollections of people and events will intrigue and delight even the most serious fly tier. He also shares years of wisdom and knowledge on fly-tying colors; fly patterns; fly-tying tools, hooks, and materials; and fly-fishing and fly-tying methods. Hellekson' depicts hundreds of intricate patterns for dry flies, wet flies, and nymphs. Mayfly, stonefly, and caddisfly species are widely represented with simulations of the phases of their respective life cycles. Detailed patterns for terrestrials, damselflies and dragonflies, leeches and worms, midges, crustaceans, streamers, shad flies, steelhead flies, Atlantic salmon flies, Spey flies, Pacific salmon flies, and salmon and steelhead dry flies round out the book. This encyclopedia is organized into two distinct parts: the first section describes the origins of fly-fishing; the concepts of vision and perception of color; and the tools and materials from which artificial flies are created. It addresses dry flies, wet flies, nymphs, stoneflies, mayflies, and caddisflies. The second section of the book thoroughly attends to the simulation of other insect orders, such as terrestrials and crustaceans, and then delves into the specifics of streamers, shad flies, steelhead flies, and more. Even a fly-fishing novice will be enthralled with illustrations that clarify the patterns in a reader-friendly style. Line illustrations throughout, plus more than 2,950 detailed fly patterns-including 695 flies shown in full color-make this a comprehensive fly-tying encyclopedia beyond compare. Terry Hellekson was born into the world of fly-fishing and spent his early life in Happy Camp, California, where his father had a fly-fishing guide service on the Klamath and Trinity rivers during the 1940s and 1950s. Hellekson not only fly-fished and tied flies as a youth, but he developed many new fly patterns and eventually became immersed in all phases of the fly-fishing and fly-tying businesses. He founded Fly Fishing Specialties, a wholesale and retail business. He continually exchanges information with leading experts in fly-fishing and fly tying. Hellekson has traveled the world discovering sources for fly-tying materials and other products that he sold on the international market. He has also fished many of the great lakes and rivers of the world, traveling to such far off places as Kashmir to test the waters of the Himalayas. Hellekson is one of the founders of the Northern Utah Fly Fishers and the Granite Bay Fly Casters in northern California. Through fly-tying classes and fly-fishing clinics, he has taught countless numbers of fly fishers the fine points of the sporting art. Besides the many articles he has written on fly-fishing and fly tying, he has authored two books, Popular Fly Patterns (1976) and Fish Flies (1995), with this revised edition the culmination of a lifetime of work. He has also made generous contributions to the works of other authors. He now lives and fishes with his wife, Patricia, in Montana, where they have the famous Kootenai River at their doorstep.
