Book excerpt: "DePoy, a folklorist, excels at providing local color and creating complex characters. The story unfolds slowly and lyrically, giving readers a sense of small-town Appalachian atmosphere." –Booklist on A Minister's Ghost "By far DePoy's best, with top-notch plotting, full-blown characters, and a bit of Shakespeare thrown in." – Kirkus Reviews (starred) on A Minister's Ghost Fever Devilin, born and raised amongst the hill country folk of the Georgia Appalachians, left home a long time ago and pursued an education, then a career, in the wider outside world. A folklorist by inclination and profession, he left the strange world of academia behind to return to his family-home in the if-anything-stranger mountain town he grew up in. But oddness follows Fever wherever he goes and Blue Mountain, Georgia is no different. When a man shows up at his house, claiming to be over a hundred years old even though he looks like he's in his 30's, Fever is pretty sure his guest is not right. When the man starts to wave a gun around, then falls suddenly asleep immediately afterward, Fever thinks he's both "not right" and "dangerous" and slips out to call the sheriff. The sheriff, Fever's childhood friend, has been hearing reports of this particular vagrant all day but before he can get out there, the man disappears. In the early morning, the body of man that fits the description of the mysterious vagrant is found by the side of the road, shot to death. But, although the body is wearing the same clothes that the vagrant was, it isn't the same person.

Book British Naval Trawlers and Drifters in Two World Wars

Download or read book British Naval Trawlers and Drifters in Two World Wars written by Steve Dunn and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Lambert was a renowned naval draughtsman, whose plans were highly valued for their accuracy and detail by modelmakers and enthusiasts. By the time of his death in 2016 he had produced over 850 sheets of drawings, many of which have never been published. These were acquired by Seaforth and this title is the fourth of a planned series of albums on selected themes, reproducing complete sheets at a large page size, with expert commentary and captioning. Trawlers and drifters served in both world wars in their thousands; and, in their tens of thousands, so did their fishermen crews. Indeed, these humble craft were the most numerous vessel type used by the Royal Navy in both wars, and were the answer to the strategic or tactical conundrums posed by new technology of mines and submarines. In his accompanying text, Steve Dunn examines the ships themselves, their design, construction, arming, operations and development; and he also relates how the trawlermen and skippers, from the age-old fishing ports of Grimsby, Hull, Lowestoft ad Great Yarmouth, Aberdeen and Fleetwood, came to be part of the Royal Navy, and describes the roles they played, the conditions they served under and the bravery they showed. The book takes some 30 large sheets of drawings which John Lambert completed of these vessels and divides into two sections. The first part tells how the fishing fleet came to be an integral part of the Royal Navy’s pre-1914 plans and details some of the activities and actions of trawlers and drifters at war in 1914-18. And the second investigates the armed fishing fleet in the struggle of 1939-45. These wonderfully detailed drawings, which are backed by a selection of photographs and a detailed complementary text, offer a superb technical archive for enthusiasts and ship modellers, but the book also tells a fascinating story of the extraordinary contribution the vessels and their crews made to the defeat of Germany in two world wars.

Book Wheels of Danger

Download or read book Wheels of Danger written by Sylvia A. Witmore and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oh, the Sundays when the powerful voices of "Wings Over Jordan" flooded, no, bombarded every house in the neighborhood. Perhaps sun oozed into our parlors or rain beat down the roses in each yard. Perhaps, the snow fell in white layers on the pavements, porches, yards of our houses but the melodic voices of our talented brothers and sisters encouraged us to go on and on and on. I'm sure this was what inspired Papa to go each day for long hours to barber, what inspired him to keep on keeping on. What made us all go ever forward in our every day happenings since, in these wonderful, inspirational songs, always introduced with, "Go Down Moses, Way down in Egypt Land. Tell Ole Pharaoh to let my people go!" our lives were peaceful because all was well with our souls. These great, grand spirituals gave this all-Black community a promise of hope and the expectancy of good things to come. To us, that was what it all was about.
