Book excerpt: Your dreams belong to you. Theyre private, and no one needs to know what happens in them. But what if someone could invade your dreams? And once in, what if that someone could control what happens while you lie there, powerless to affect the outcome? Dylan Ward can do that. Struggling to make partner in a law firm and finding it hard to hold on to a romantic relationship, his nightly dreams become his escape into a world that seems far happier than his real one. When he learns about the phenomenon of lucid dreaming, where the sleeping person is actually conscious of the events in the dream, he immerses himself in an attempt to master it. Soon his nights are filled with fun and adventure, where he has the power to control events and find temporary relief from his mundane life. That relief soon pales when he reads an old legend about dream sharing that leads him to the idea of entering and controlling the dreams of others. What starts out as an interesting experiment soon turns into an obsession of hacking into the dreams of the people in his life. He begins a strange quest for vengeance, power, love, and all the things that are missing from his real world. But its when he devises a way to teach other people how to invade dreams that the dangers of his obsession become frighteningly clear. The Dream Hacker moves between imagination and reality, along the hazy sleeping path that everyone travels but cant really navigate. Mixing equal parts of dark humor and the angst of modern culture, the story challenges our notions of understanding what is real and asks just how far a person will go to change the course of his life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It was just a dream." Or was it? What if our dreams became more than just vague memories and nightmares? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to dream and know that you are dreaming? Dream hacking, or lucid dreaming, has been used for centuries as a way for people to 'wake up' in their dreams. When you dream hack, you become aware that you are indeed dreaming. This awareness opens up a new world of self-discovery, growth, understanding, and enlightenment. You have the opportunity to control your dreams and use them to your benefit. You can learn to consistently experience dreams in which you are lucid. Imagine what could happen if the third of your life you spend sleeping became a practice ground, a safe haven, a retreat, a place to find answers to your most difficult questions, a playground...or anything you wanted it to be. This books gives you the tools to become a lucid dreamer. When you become lucid in your dreams you will also learn to become lucid in your life. In our lucid dreams we realize that we are in control, that we are not just a victim, and that we have the capacity and potential to manifest love, strength, beauty, and abundance. Once we begin doing this in our dreams it can start happening in our lives. It is time to wake up.

Book Liminal Dreaming

Download or read book Liminal Dreaming written by Jennifer Dumpert and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A consciousness and dream hacker explains how to use liminal dreaming—the dreams that come between sleep and waking—for self-actualization and consciousness expansion. At the edges of consciousness, between waking and sleeping, there’s a swirling, free associative state of mind that is the domain of liminal dreams. Working with liminal dreams can improve sleep, mitigate anxiety and depression, help to heal trauma, and aid creativity and problem-solving. As we sink into slumber, we pass through hypnagogia, the first of the two liminal dream states. In this transitional zone, memories, perceptions, and imaginings arise in a fast moving, hallucinatory, semi-conscious remix. On the other end of the night, as we wake, we experience hypnopompia—the hazy, pleasant, drift that is the other liminal dream state. Readers of Liminal Dreaming will learn step-by-step how to create a dream practice outside of REM-sleep states that they can incorporate into their lives in personally meaningful ways. Liminal dreaming practice is also far easier to learn than lucid dreaming practice, making it possible for the reader to begin working with these dreams this very night.

Book Hacking Life

  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2020-02-18
  • ISBN : 0262538997
  • Pages : 217 pages

Download or read book Hacking Life written by Joseph M. Reagle, Jr. and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an effort to keep up with a world of too much, life hackers sometimes risk going too far. Life hackers track and analyze the food they eat, the hours they sleep, the money they spend, and how they're feeling on any given day. They share tips on the most efficient ways to tie shoelaces and load the dishwasher; they employ a tomato-shaped kitchen timer as a time-management tool. They see everything as a system composed of parts that can be decomposed and recomposed, with algorithmic rules that can be understood, optimized, and subverted. In Hacking Life, Joseph Reagle examines these attempts to systematize living and finds that they are the latest in a long series of self-improvement methods. Life hacking, he writes, is self-help for the digital age's creative class. Reagle chronicles the history of life hacking, from Benjamin Franklin's Poor Richard's Almanack through Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and Timothy Ferriss's The 4-Hour Workweek. He describes personal outsourcing, polyphasic sleep, the quantified self movement, and hacks for pickup artists. Life hacks can be useful, useless, and sometimes harmful (for example, if you treat others as cogs in your machine). Life hacks have strengths and weaknesses, which are sometimes like two sides of a coin: being efficient is not the same thing as being effective; being precious about minimalism does not mean you are living life unfettered; and compulsively checking your vital signs is its own sort of illness. With Hacking Life, Reagle sheds light on a question even non-hackers ponder: what does it mean to live a good life in the new millennium?

Book excerpt: This taut, true thriller dives into a dark world that touches us all, as seen through the brilliant, breakneck career of an extraordinary hacker--a woman known only as Alien. When she arrived at MIT in the 1990s, Alien was quickly drawn to the school's tradition of high‑risk physical trespassing: the original "hacking." Within a year, one of her hallmates was dead and two others were arraigned. Alien's adventures were only just beginning. After a stint at the storied, secretive Los Alamos National Laboratory, Alien was recruited by a top cybersecurity firm where she deployed her cache of virtual weapons--and the trespassing and social engineering talents she had developed while "hacking" at MIT. The company tested its clients' security by every means possible--not just coding, but donning disguises and sneaking past guards and secretaries into the C‑suite. Alien now runs a boutique hacking outfit that caters to some of the world's biggest and most vulnerable institutions--banks, retailers, government agencies. Her work combines devilish charm, old‑school deception, and next generation spycraft. In Breaking and Entering, cybersecurity finally gets the rich, character‑driven, fast-paced treatment it deserves.

Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking study, Andrew Hacker offers a fresh and disturbing examination of the divisions of color and class in present-day America, analyzing the conditions that keep black and white Americans dangerously far apart in their ability to achieve the American dream. Why, despite continued efforts to increase understanding and expand opportunities, do black and white Americans still lead separate lives, continually marked by tension and hostility? In his much-lauded classic and updated version reflecting the changing realities of race in our nation, Andrew Hacker explains the origins and meaning of racism and clarifies the conflicting theories of equality and inferiority. He paints a stark picture of racial inequality in America—focusing on family life, education, income, and employment—and explores the controversies over politics, crime, and the causes of the gap between the races. Reasoned, accurate, and devastating, Two Nations demonstrates how this great and dividing issue has defined America's history and the pivotal role it will play in the future.

Book Understanding Dreams and Other Spontaneous Images

Download or read book Understanding Dreams and Other Spontaneous Images written by Erik D. Goodwyn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-09 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Dreams and Other Spontaneous Images: The Invisible Storyteller applies a contemporary interdisciplinary approach to dream interpretation, bringing cognitive anthropology, folklore studies, affective neuroscience, and dynamic systems theory to bear on contemporary psychodynamic clinical practice. It provides a practical guide for working with dreams that can be used by both individuals on their own and therapists working with clients. Erik D. Goodwyn invites us to examine key features of reported dreams, such as the qualities of the environment depicted, its familiarity or unfamiliarity, the nature of the characters encountered, and overall themes. This method facilitates an understanding of the dream in the full context of the dreamer’s life, rather than interpreting individual, isolated elements. Goodwyn also introduces the mental process which orchestrates dreams, conceptualised here as the ‘Invisible Storyteller’, and explores how understanding it can positively impact satisfaction in waking life. As a whole, the book provides a collection of tools and techniques which can be referred to time and again, as well as a wealth of examples. Exploring dreams as a natural source of clinical insight, The Invisible Storyteller will appeal to Jungian psychotherapists and analytical psychologists, other professionals working with dreams with clients, and readers looking for a scientific approach to dream interpretation.
