Book excerpt: Jacob de Gheyn's 'Exercise of Armes' was an immense success when first published in 1607. It is a fascinating seventeenth-century military manual, designed to instruct contemporary soldiers how to handle arms effectively, and correctly, and it makes for a unique glimpse into warfare as waged in the Thirty Years War and the English Civil War. The manual uses illustrations to clearly demonstrate drills for soldiers employing calivers and muskets. It shows how to load and fire, or merely carry, a matchlock piece. In addition detailed illustrations show the various movements and postures to be adopted during use of the pike. There are 117 illustrations contained in this book and all are fine examples of seventeenth-century art. Each image is detailed and evocative and students of military history and military costume are sure to find them of immense interest. Jacob de Gheyn's manual is an important insight into how the armies of Europe operated in the field in the seventeenth century, but it is also an attractive book of considerable charm and character.

Book Jacques de Gheyn II Engravings of the Twelve Sons of Jacob and More

Download or read book Jacques de Gheyn II Engravings of the Twelve Sons of Jacob and More written by Andrew Livingston and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-13 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacques (Jacob) de Gheyn II was born in Antwerp to Jacob de Gheyn I in 1565. He learned glass painting, engraving, and drafting from a young age, eventually moving to Haarlem to study under Hendrik Goltzius in 1585. By the mid-1590s, his work was in demand. His largest commission at the time was an engraving of the Siege of Geertruidenberg for Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange. The Siege of Geertruidenberg by the Prince of Orange was a show of power, and was used as a publicity stunt. The siege and engraving were successful in convincing many of the prince's ability as a general. By the 1600s, he was employed by Dutch royalty. He often drew landscapes and natural history and painted some of the earlier vanitas, nudes, and still lifes. In 1589, he produced 12 engravings of The Sons of Jacob from the Old Testament. These sons were, according to Deuteronomy, to become the 12 Tribes of Israel. De Gheyn II's series displays his training in the Northern Mannerism tradition. Each of the sons displays a unique character, and shows de Gheyn's skill with a variety of subjects. He died in The Hague in 1629.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthony M. Amore and Tom Mashberg's Stealing Rembrandts is a spellbinding journey into the high-stakes world of art theft Today, art theft is one of the most profitable criminal enterprises in the world, exceeding $6 billion in losses to galleries and art collectors annually. And the masterpieces of Rembrandt van Rijn are some of the most frequently targeted. In Stealing Rembrandts, art security expert Anthony M. Amore and award-winning investigative reporter Tom Mashberg reveal the actors behind the major Rembrandt heists in the last century. Through thefts around the world - from Stockholm to Boston, Worcester to Ohio - the authors track daring entries and escapes from the world's most renowned museums. There are robbers who coolly walk off with multimillion dollar paintings; self-styled art experts who fall in love with the Dutch master and desire to own his art at all costs; and international criminal masterminds who don't hesitate to resort to violence. They also show how museums are thwarted in their ability to pursue the thieves - even going so far as to conduct investigations on their own, far away from the maddening crowd of police intervention, sparing no expense to save the priceless masterpieces. Stealing Rembrandts is an exhilarating, one-of-a-kind look at the black market of art theft, and how it compromises some of the greatest treasures the world has ever known.
