Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated whether the Draw-A-Person and a rating scale that consisted of five indicators could determine level of self-esteem. (Szumigala, 2003) There were a total of 32 college students that participated and the drawings were rated by three art therapy students. Scores were correlated with results of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Inter rater reliability was low and the correlation between the D-A-P scores and the RSES scores also fell short of statistical significance.

Book The Application of the Drawing Diagnostic Series in the Assessment of Self Concept with College Age Students

Download or read book The Application of the Drawing Diagnostic Series in the Assessment of Self Concept with College Age Students written by Diane M. Vankevich and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a significant relationship between a projective drawing of a tree and an individual’s self-concept and sense of self. The study was designed to utilize the Drawing Diagnostic Series and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale to analyze the connection between the drawing of a tree and self-concept (Cohen, 1985; Rosenberg, 1965). The DDS and the RSES were chosen for their strengths in the field of art therapy and in psychological testing based on their undeniable reliability and validity. This research study is rooted in the concept that projective drawings serve clinicians by providing information about a client’s personality characteristics and perceptions of themselves and the world. Tree drawings are unique like the individuals that draw them and it is evident that mental health clinicians can learn about their client’s sense of self through the application of drawing techniques.

Book Using the Draw a person Test to Rate Self esteem in Dually Diagnosed Psychiatric Inpatients

Download or read book Using the Draw a person Test to Rate Self esteem in Dually Diagnosed Psychiatric Inpatients written by Ellen Szumigala and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the ability of projective drawings to measure self-esteem. A rating scale developed for the Machover Draw-A-Person (D-A-P) test was used to determine if specific indicators, identified in the literature on projective drawings, are able to measure self-esteem. Twenty dually diagnosed in-patients were tested. The results of the D-A-P ratings made by two graduate students of art therapy and one art therapist were evaluated for inter-rater relability and then correlated with the results of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). Results showed moderate inter-rater reliability and suggested that three of the D-A-P self-esteem indicators correlate well together. The correlation between D-A-P scores and self-reported self-esteem fell short of statistical significance. However, when only the three more reliable indicators were used, a trend toward a significant relationship was found. Although the reults of this study are inconclusive, the D-A-P shows promise for rating self-esteem in psychiatric and substance abuse settings.

Book Human Figure Drawing as a Measure of Self esteem

Download or read book Human Figure Drawing as a Measure of Self esteem written by Abby L. MacKinnel and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construct of self-esteem is a significant aspect of an individual's sense of worth, thus shaping attitudes and behavior about the self. Projective art techniques can reflect the individual's self-concept in various ways. In the present study, the Human Figure Drawing (HFD) created by Koppitz (1968) was utilized to determine if the size of the drawn figure is an effective measure of self-esteem. Participants in this study included 47 undergraduate students. Figure height and area were measured from the HFD and self-esteem was measured by using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSSE; Rosenberg, 1965). It was expected that larger and taller figure drawings would correlate with higher self-esteem scores. Results for this studey were not significant, but other trends were noted. Individuals who scored in the high range for self-esteem were much more likely to include teeth in their figure drawings. Additionally, there were weak correlations noted in an exploratory analysis based on gender.

Download or read book Understanding Selfies written by Piotr Sorokowski and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the year 2013, ‘selfie’ was named word of the year by Oxford Dictionaries in recognition of dramatic changes in frequency, prominence, and register of the term. This drastic increase in selfie-taking was spurred by two factors. The first was the advent of smartphones equipped with front cameras and preview screens that made it easy to compose a photographic self-portrait by a process of deliberately exploring one’s image, choosing a pose, and finally taking the picture. The second key change contributing to the rise of the selfie age was the increasing availability of internet connections. It is estimated that about 50% of the world population has access to the internet today (2018; https://www.internetworldstats.com). At the end of the past century, this percentage was a mere 1%. The growth of the internet infrastructure simultaneously spurred the development of social network applications such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram, providing accessible media for sharing photographs including photographic self-portraits. However, despite their tremendous reach and popularity, selfies have so far received relatively little attention by the scientific community, especially within psychology. Thus, we proposed a Frontiers in Psychology Research Topic to expand empirical and theoretical work on the massively popular, yet scientifically unexplored, phenomenon of the selfie. The articles published in this eBook offer a multifaceted insight into current scholarly work on this topic.

Book Using the Draw A Person to Measure Body Image in Female College Freshmen

Download or read book Using the Draw A Person to Measure Body Image in Female College Freshmen written by Caitlin M. Rose and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aimed to validate the use of Gomez's (2011) Draw-A-Person-Body Image (DAP-BI) rating scale as an art therapy measure for detecting body image satisfaction in undergraduate first year college students. All participants were women (N=30), predominantly Caucasian, ages 18-19, were first asked to draw a person (DAP; Machover, 1949) and then to fill out the Multidimensional Body Self-Relations Questionnaire-Appearance Scales (MBSRQ-AS; Cash,2000). Drawings were then independently rated using the DAP-BI. Pearson r correlation results show that the DAP-BI graphic indicators of Facial Orientation, presence of Hands, and presences of a Ground Line did not correlate significantly with the MBSRQ-AS scores in this sample of undergraduate freshmen women. The majority of the drawings from this population lacked any sexual body shape, despite being drawn by fully developed adults. It is proposed for future research that this graphic indicator be incorporated in the DAP-BI manual for an age-specific correlate of body image for the young adult female population.
