Book Discontinuous Fiber Reinforced Composites

Download or read book Discontinuous Fiber Reinforced Composites written by Umesh Gandhi and published by Hanser Publications. This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many books on composite material analysis, but most cover mainly continuous fiber materials, rather than those filled with discontinuous fibers, which are particularly attractive for large-volume and low-cost applications. This book provides the theoretical and practical background to design and use discontinuous fiber reinforced polymer materials, with an emphasis on structural parts for the automotive industry. Moreover, the product of years of collaborative work between industry and academia is presented in an easy-to-use, comprehensive manner. The information provided makes it possible for someone with an engineering background to understand the micromechanics of discontinuous fiber reinforced materials and, hence, analyze the structural performance of components designed with such materials. The book employs a practical approach to cover the key, unique capabilities that are critical for a successful structural analysis of discontinuous fiber reinforced polymer structures: -Process simulation to estimate the condition of fibers in the finished parts, i.e., fiber length, orientation, and concentration -Capability to measure micro structure, i.e., fiber length distribution, fiber orientation tensors, and fiber concentration, etc. -Estimation of material properties in the part based on fiber condition, as well as environmental conditions such as temperature A broad range of areas is included, such as joining and assembly.

Book Discontinuous Fiber Composites Volume II

Download or read book Discontinuous Fiber Composites Volume II written by Tim A Osswald and published by Mdpi AG. This book was released on 2021-09-13 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discontinuous fiber-reinforced polymers have gained importance in transportation industries due to their outstanding material properties, lower manufacturing costs and superior lightweight characteristics. One of the most attractive attributes of discontinuous fiber-reinforced composites is the ease with which they can be manufactured in large numbers, using injection and compression molding processes. The main aim of this Special Issue is to collect various investigations focused on the processing of discontinuous fiber-reinforced composites and the effect that processing has on fiber orientation, fiber length and fiber density distributions throughout the final product. Papers presenting investigations on the effect that fiber configurations have on the mechanical properties of the final composite products and materials were welcome in the Special Issue. Researchers who model and simulate processes involving discontinuous fiber composites as well as those performing experimental studies involving these composites were welcomed to submit papers. The authors were encouraged to present new models, constitutive laws, and measuring and monitoring techniques to provide a complete framework on these groundbreaking materials and to facilitate their use in different engineering applications.

Book Investigation of Draw induced Fiber Orientation in Discontinuous fiber Thermoplastic Composite Sheets and Development of Post process Drawing Technique

Download or read book Investigation of Draw induced Fiber Orientation in Discontinuous fiber Thermoplastic Composite Sheets and Development of Post process Drawing Technique written by Navaneethaa Krishnan Pollachi Veluswamy and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite increasing demand for carbon fibers, the high cost of advanced composites remains a significant impediment to their wider use in industrial and consumer applications. One route to meet the demands and reducing the costs of composites involves the utilization of recycled fibers in thermoplastic matrices. Researchers at the CNAM (Composite and Nanocomposite Advanced Manufacturing) Center have developed a process, based on twin-screw extrusion, which minimizes fiber length attrition while imparting significant fiber orientation in the “machine direction”. The patent-pending CNAM-DiFTS (Discontinuous Fiber Thermoplastic Sheet) process involves continuous feeding of the reinforced polymer extrudate into a set of in-line calender rollers which creates a reinforced sheet of uniform thickness and provides preferential fiber alignment along the length of the sheet. Even a relatively modest degree of fiber orientation can have a strong impact on composite properties in the alignment direction. The overall objective of the research is to introduce a novel post-drawing technique to further increase the alignment of the fibers in the DiFTS, thereby bringing the mechanical properties of discontinuous fiber composites as close as possible to those of continuous fiber composites.

Book Strength Properties of Discontinuous Fiber Composites

Download or read book Strength Properties of Discontinuous Fiber Composites written by Paul E. Chen and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The longitudinal strengths of unidirectional discontinuous fiber composites have been calculated based on the concept of perturbation effect and the distortional energy criterion, utilizing the finite-element method. The theoretical results thus obtained are compared with the experimental data as well as the results of shear lag analysis for tungsten-copper, boron-aluminum, glass-epoxy and boron-epoxy composites. Based on the Jackson-Cratchley equations, modified for discontinuous fibers, a formula is also proposed for calculating the strengths of randomly oriented discontinuous fiber composites. The results calculated from this formula are compared with the experimental data for aluminum oxide-aluminum-silicon and glass-epoxy composites. (Author).

Book Laboratory Production of Discontinuous Aligned Fiber Composite Plates Using an Autoclave Style Press Cure

Download or read book Laboratory Production of Discontinuous Aligned Fiber Composite Plates Using an Autoclave Style Press Cure written by RF. Gibson and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this article are twofold: to describe a procedure that we have developed for producing laboratory quantities of discontinuous-aligned fiber composite materials and to discuss the autoclave-style press cure as an inexpensive laboratory-scale alternative to the industrial autoclave cure. We have produced discontinuous-aligned fiber composite plates from continuous fiber prepreg tapes of graphite/epoxy, Kevlar/epoxy, and boron/epoxy using a vacuum-bagged mold in a small laboratory press. Procedures and apparatus are described, and the quality of autoclave-cured samples is compared with that of autoclave-style press cured samples.

Download or read book Microstructural Design of Fiber Composites written by Tsu-Wei Chou and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-09-15 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the issue of designing the microstructure of fiber composite materials in order to obtain optimum performance. Besides the systematic treatment of conventional continuous and discontinuous fiber composites, the book also presents the state-of-the-art of the development of textile structural composites as well as the nonlinear elastic finite deformation theory of flexible composites. This book provides the first comprehensive analysis and modeling of the thermo-mechanical behavior of fiber composites with these distinct microstructures. Overall, the inter-relationships among the processing, microstructures and properties of these materials are emphasized throughout the book. The book is intended as a text for graduate or advanced undergraduate students, but will also be an excellent reference for all materials scientists and engineers who are researching or working with these materials.
