Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most complete, comprehensive account of the life and work of George Ivanovich Gurdjieff, one of the greatest men of the 20th century, and the only one which attempts to describe his mission. Since Gurdjieff's death in 1949, countless books have been written describing an author's experience with him, in more or less personal detail. This is the first and only book written by an associate of Gurdjieff, presenting an overview of Gurdjieff's life, cultural background, studies, teachings, practices, cosmology, psychology and goals. The author encountered Gurdjieff first in Istanbul in 1920, saw him again in London and the Prieure, Fontainebleau, lost touch with him for 25 years and saw him again in Paris and New York in the last two years of his life. He devoted the last 25 years of his own life to researching and transmitting Gurdjieff's teachings. As the title suggests, the author identifies Gurdjieff's work as nothing less than the inauguration of a new epoch of human evolution, based upon a new understanding of the meaning of "Conscience"; a model based not upon the supremacy of the individual and humanity as a whole, but upon cooperation with both higher and lower powers. The twelve chapters and two appendices are written as a series of essays, which can be read either sequentially or separately. The second appendix gives an account of a cosmological system that is parallel to but entirely separate from the Ray of Creation described in detail in Ouspensky's "In Search of the Miraculous.""

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bennett opens with the words: "Few people who have read my book, The Dramatic Universe, have seen that the suggestion that there is a fundamental uncertainty in the very existence of the universe, including ourselves, is entirely revolutionary and undermines beliefs that have been taken for granted equally by religious and by scientific people. As the years go by, I become more and more convinced that the doctrine of universal hazard must before long replace our belief in absolutes of any kind and that is why I have decided to speak about this doctrine at this particular stage of my life." This book represents a course of study based on the fundamental principle of universal hazard as presented in his major work "The Dramatic Universe" and a series of commentaries on different aspects. Talks presented in included discussions opening from questions put by students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book takes the form of six essays covering the life and teachings of Shri Govindananda Bharati, known at the time of his death as the Shivapuri Baba. The first chapter describes his origins from his birth in 1826 in Kerala, his religious training and preparation and his 40 year circumambulation of the world, meeting all the major world leaders of his day, and his forty year retirement in a forest hut outside Kathmandu. Subsequent chapters, describe his practical teachings, which are so simply explained and so universal that they will always be relevant to seekers. Ancient teachings are presented in a modern interpretation. The Shivapuri Baba himself described his teachings as "the Bhagavad Gita brought up to date'. The final chapter presents a revolutionary world view which reveals an immense wisdom and understanding of human destiny, presented in a form that all can appreciate. The Shivapuri Baba left this life in January of 1963, and at that time few knew of him, and nothing at all had been written about him. The present book was the first public account of the saint, appearing in 1965. In 2001, Thakur Lal Manadhar's son Giridhar approached J.G. Bennett's family requesting the rights to republish in English and Nepali. Giridhar was able to provide a number of photographic images not published previously and many of which were from his own camera. The present edition is taken from the 2001 publication. At the launch of the book in Kathmandu in 2007, Giridhar was asked by a reporter whether the Shivapuri Baba had actually read what was written, noting that the text indicated that he had seen and approved it? Giridhar said that he believed that he had not read it, and stating that at the end of his life, the Shivapuri Baba did not want to engage with anything which would tie him to the world he was preparing to leave for the last time. To Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, visiting in 1956 he said: "I teach three disciplines: physical; moral spiritual." These disciplines form the foundation of Right Life - Swadharma, and the journals of Thakur Lal Manandhar relate how these disciplines were taught in the practical application to every day life. This is a simple but inspiring book from which everybody can benefit .

Book A New Theory of Urban Design

Download or read book A New Theory of Urban Design written by Christopher Alexander and published by Center for Environmental Struc. This book was released on 1987 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The venerable cities of the past, such as Venice or Amsterdam, convey a feeling of wholeness, an organic unity that surfaces in every detail, large and small, in restaurants, shops, public gardens, even in balconies and ornaments. But this sense of wholeness is lacking in modern urban design, with architects absorbed in problems of individual structures, and city planners preoccupied with local ordinances, it is almost impossible to achieve. In this groundbreaking volume, architect and planner Christopher Alexander presents a new theory of urban design which attempts to recapture the process by which cities develop organically. To discover the kinds of laws needed to create a growing whole in a city, Alexander proposes here a preliminary set of seven rules which embody the process at a practical level and which are consistent with the day-to-day demands of urban development. He then puts these rules to the test, setting out with a number of his graduate students to simulate the urban redesign of a high-density part of San Francisco, initiating a project that encompassed some ninety different design problems, including warehouses, hotels, fishing piers, a music hall, and a public square. This extensive experiment is documented project by project, with detailed discussion of how each project satisfied the seven rules, accompanied by floorplans, elevations, street grids, axonometric diagrams and photographs of the scaled-down model which clearly illustrate the discussion. A New Theory of Urban Design provides an entirely new theoretical framework for the discussion of urban problems, one that goes far to remedy the defects which cities have today.

Book The Masters of Wisdom

  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book The Masters of Wisdom written by J. Bennett and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-05 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Masters of Wisdom" is the last book to have been published during the John Bennett's lifetime, and is probably the most unusual, having little in common with his previously published works, except in serving a number of discrete objectives. Originally planned to be incorporated into a single volume to be entitled "Gurdjieff and the Masters of Wisdom" this work was separated from what became "Gurdjieff: Making a New World" which eventually was published a year earlier in 1973. In the last years of Bennett's life, he had been deeply affected by his close association with the Turkish mystic, Hasan Lutfi Shushud, and originally a contract was drawn up with a London publishing house for the combined work, in which both men were signed as joint authors. However, before anything was written, Shushud abruptly withdrew his support for the project, ostensibly on the grounds of a disagreement with the publishers. Only after Bennett's death in 1974, Shushud indicated privately that he found Gurdjieff's teaching and methods offensive. There is however some overlap between the two books, and "The Masters of Wisdom" draws on Gurdjieff's resources as well as material provided by Hasan Shushud. "The Masters of Wisdom" is unlike Bennett's other books not only in the way it is constructed, which appears to be somewhat out of balance, but also in the content. The first three chapters provide an overview of material presented 8 years earlier in the fourth volume of "The Dramatic Universe", of the Earth as single intelligent whole, in which humanity plays an increasingly active role and - must accept greater responsibility. These chapters provide an introduction to Chapter 4 which presents an account of the Christ Event not to be found anywhere else, and by Bennett's own account, arising out of insights vouchsafed to him privately by Gurdjieff. The next chapter serves as a bridge to the second major detailed message Bennett shares, which concerns the extraordinary period spanning at least 350 years, when a group of men within a single unbroken tradition played a pivotal and benign role in otherwise catastrophic events. It is not clear why Bennett devotes an entire chapter to Genghis Khan in a book entitled "The Masters of Wisdom" except that he appears to have been an exceptionally gifted individual whom Bennett apparently admired for his great self-control, and his willingness to accept guidance from a spiritual director. The researches Bennett completed in his last years led him to certain conclusions which may not have been fully expressed in this account. Unlike Bennett's other books, "The Masters of Wisdom" contains hidden messages, and also occult elements which are accessible to those able to access them. "Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson" and "The Dramatic Universe" showed the transformative power of books, but like "Meetings with Remarkable Men" this book imparts information which remains hidden except from those readers who find the key. The book is also unlike any of Bennett's other books in containing secret "magic" elements, opening mystical channels. Since the text was left unfinished when Bennett died, it is not possible to know for certain whether the message of the book is complete or would have included other material such as the very detailed accounts that Bennett gave to his student in the last months - the "esoteric phase" - of the Third Basic Course. Overall the message is of the planet we inhabit seen as a single indivisible whole, of which we human beings are an important element, but which is subordinate to the Cosmic forces.

Book Descent of Man Revisited World History

Download or read book Descent of Man Revisited World History written by John C. Landon and published by South Fork Books LLC. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Descent of Man Revisited deals with the questions of world history and human emergence, as it explores issues of evolutionary theory, biological self-organization, and the history of biological thought, from the period of Lamarck and the predecessors of Darwin. The relationship of evolution to history remains a source of confusion, and the text explores this problem, along with the issues of non-random emergence visible in the archaeological record. This invites a close look at the data of the so-called Axial Age. Included is a new perspective on the rise of modernity, and the debates over secularism. The text contains a set of outlines of world history, attempting to examine the idea of 'evolutionary chronicles' as the early emergence of man passes through a transition from 'evolution to history'. This idea requires considering the idea of the 'evolution of freedom'. This creates a connection with issues of so-called Big History, and the classical philosophy of history. There are many additional topics discussed, from the evolution of ethics, and consciousness, to the riddle of evolutionary enlightenment, finally to the question of the 'first and last man', an idea from Olaf Stapleton, in a consideration of the future evolution of man, in the 'conclusion' or 'self-evolutionary epilog' of homo sapiens.

Book Deeper Man

Book excerpt: For 40 years, since Deeper Man was first published, it has been widely recognised as one of the most reliable and cogent presentations of the 'work ideas' associated with Gurdjieff and the 'fourth way'. Bennett devoted himself to making the ideas accessible to as wide a range of people as possible. He was always finding new ways of communicating what he saw as critically important: that people should become convinced of the reality of higher worlds but not regard them as far away, only of concern for rare, exceptional people.Based on some of the last lectures Bennett gave before his death in 1974, Deeper Man represents only half of what he hoped to include in a book he envisaged ('Dig Deeper, Man!'). Even so, it ranges far and wide and includes a radical, new understanding of what Gurdjieff meant by the 'centres' in man. The book we have here, hopefully, expresses something of the great generosity of spirit which was a feature of this extraordinary man.
