Book excerpt: A dragonwoman who doesn’t know how to shift, a single dad struggling after an injury, and a student-teacher relationship that turns into something more… After spending seven years as a prisoner inside an illegal dragon research facility, Persephone “Percy” Smith is rescued by Clan Stonefire and taken back to their land. Everything she sees there contradicts what she was told growing up, and Percy realizes she has no idea how to be a dragon-shifter. To help her learn, she’s assigned a kind and sexy yet determined dragonman named Bronx Wells to be her teacher, along with his fifteen-year-old daughter. But she’s skeptical about everyone’s kindness, which she’s always viewed as a weakness. Growing up in an orphanage that forced dragon-shifter children to act like humans, as well as being sold at age thirteen to the research facility, she’s learned the hard way that caring about others only ever gets her hurt. To survive, she never, ever trusts anyone but herself. However, as Bronx and his daughter slowly teach Percy how to embrace her dragon and discover who she truly is, she wonders if maybe there are good people in the world—especially since Bronx gives her choices that no one else ever has. Soon, she starts to feel things she’s never felt before and wonders if she could ever trust him. Can Percy risk opening her fragile heart to Bronx? Or will she have to leave her first real home on Stonefire to protect herself?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Susan Howe's classic groundbreaking exploration of early American literature. In this classic, groundbreaking exploration of early American literature, Susan Howe reads our intellectual inheritance as a series of civil wars, where each text is a wilderness in which a strange lawless author confronts interpreters and editors eager for settlement. Howe approaches Anne Hutchinson, Mary Rowlandson, Cotton Mather, Hawthorne, Emerson, Melville and Emily Dickinson as a fellow writer—her insights, fierce and original, are rooted in her seminal textural scholarship in examination of their editorial histories of landmark works. In the process, Howe uproots settled institutionalized roles of men and women as well as of poetry and prose—and of poetry and prose. The Birth-mark, first published in 1993, now joins the New Directions canon of a dozen Susan Howe titles.

Download or read book The Woman Without a Hole Other Risky Themes from Old Japanese Poems written by Robin D. Gill and published by Paraverse Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 17-syllabet Japanese poems about human foibles, sans season (i.e., not haiku), were introduced a half-century ago by RH Blyth in two books, "Edo Satirical Verse Anthologies" and "Japanese Life and Character in Senryu." Blyth regretted having to introduce not the best senryu, but only the best that were clean enough to pass the censors. In this anthology, compiled, translated and essayed by Robin D. Gill, like Blyth, a renowned translator of thousands of haiku, we find 1,300 of the senryu (and zappai) that would once have been dangerous to publish. The book is not just an anthology of dirty poems such as Legman's classic "Limericks" or Burford's delightful "Bawdy Verse," but probing essays of thirty themes representative of the eros - both real and imaginary - of Edo, at the time, the world's largest city. Japanese themselves use senryu for historical documentation of social attitudes and cultural practices; thousands of senryu (and the related zappai), including many poems we might consider obscene, serve as examples in the Japanese equivalent of the OED (nipponkokugodaijiten). The specialized argot, obscure allusions and ellipsis that make reading dirty senryu a delightful riddle for one who knows just enough to be challenged yet not defeated, make them impenetrable to outsiders, so this educational yet entertaining resource has not been accessible to most students of Japanese (and the limited translations prove that even professors have difficulty with it). This book tries to accomplish the impossible: it includes all the information - original poems, pronunciation, explanation, glossary - needed to help specialists improve their senryu reading skills, while refraining from full citations to leave plenty of room for the curious monolingual to skip about the eclectic goodies. [Published simultaneously with two titles as an experiment.]
