Book The Beauty of Chastity

Download or read book The Beauty of Chastity written by Ev. Paul Mukendi and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A woman had been caught in the act of adultery, and she was brought to Jesus. While Jesus dealt with the sensitive issue of sexual sins, he did not speak loudly and make a long sermon, but quietly wrote it down. Sometimes honest words that are of a sensitive nature should rather be written down than said. We are aware that sexual matters are not comfortable topics to deal with, as most people treat them with social stigmas, yet we must be diligent to address them thoroughly with the help of the Holy Spirit. These teachings might make someone feel uncomfortable, yet they are one of the most noteworthy teachings of the Bible. The extent and variety of sexual sins are rapidly increasing in our sophisticated societies, so the need has arisen to present sound biblical teachings on sexuality. Many people may find themselves victims of sexual sins because they are ignorant. Hence, the Bible says, “you will know the truth, and truth shall set you free.” The purpose of these teachings is not to embarrass anyone, but to help people discover the truth. This book on chastity seeks to help both married and single people find the necessary motivation to pursue sexual purity in a perverted world, it addresses many sexual problems and objections frequently found in our society. Young people, for whom this book was mainly written, are shown how to live the charisma of virginity and celibacy charismatically — that is as a gift, in all humility, with joy and perfect freedom.

  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Download or read book Signs of Virginity written by Michael Rosenberg and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the theme of bloodied nuptial sheets seems pervasive in western culture, its association with female virginity is uniquely tied to a brief passage in the book of Deuteronomy detailing the procedure for verifying a young woman's purity; it seldom, if ever, appears outside of Abrahamic traditions. In Signs of Virginity, Michael Rosenberg examines the history of virginity testing in Judaism and early Christianity, and the relationship of these tests to a culture that encourages male sexual violence. Deuteronomy's violent vision of virginity has held sway in Jewish and Christian circles more or less ever since. However, Rosenberg points to two authors-the rabbinic collective that produced the Babylonian Talmud and the early Christian thinker Augustine of Hippo-who, even as they perpetuate patriarchal assumptions about female virginity, nonetheless attempt to subvert the emphasis on sexual dominance bequeathed to them by Deuteronomy. Unlike the authors of earlier Rabbinic and Christian texts, who modified but fundamentally maintained and even extended the Deuteronomic ideal, the Babylonian Talmud and Augustine both construct alternative models of female virginity that, if taken seriously, would utterly reverse cultural ideals of masculinity. Indeed this vision of masculinity as fundamentally gentle, rather than characterized by brutal and violent sexual behavior, fits into a broader idealization of masculinity propagated by both authors, who reject what Augustine called a "lust for dominance" as a masculine ideal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epstein, Louis M. The Jewish Marriage Contract: A Study in the Status of the Woman in Jewish Law. New York: Jewish Theological Seminary, 1927. xvii, 316 pp. Reprint available December, 2004 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. 1-58477-464-9. Cloth. $85. * A cogent and compelling examination of the history and significance of the Jewish marriage contract, the Ketubah, with extensive notes in Hebrew and English. As Epstein notes in the preface, the Ketubah offers an excellent introduction to the character of Jewish marriage because it is not a sentimental, rhetorical or subjective text. Instead, it is "a legal document embodying the essential points agreed upon by the parties and sanctioned by the law as to the manner of their living together as husband and wife" [2]. This work will interest those concerned with property rights, family, divorce, and the evolution of betrothal and marriage.

Book John Selden on Jewish Marriage Law

Book excerpt: This book contains a lengthy introduction, translation and commentary on John Selden's Uxor Hebraica. Selden was a seventeenth century Christian talmudist, classicist, legal historian and member of the British parliament who wrote extensively on a wide variety of subjects including seven books, all in Latin, of various aspects of Jewish Law. Uxor Hebraica is an exhaustive treatment of Jewish marriage law. Among the subjects treated are incest (including a unique discussion of the Karaite rules), levirate, the marriage contract and ceremonies and divorce. Selden extensively used the Hebrew Bible, its ancient and later translations, the Talmud, and especially Maimonides' Mishneh Torah. He widened his discussion by including comparative material from the New Testament, church fathers, Greece and Rome, Islam, plus usages from Ethiopia, Russia, Byzantium and medieval Europe. Although written without polemic, the work is clearly related to the religious controversies of the day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling novel imbued with delicate sociocultural, psychological, philosophical and anthropological themes, The Dilemma of an African Virgin tells the story of two young African girls who rebel against the sexually oppressive traditions they are born into. Mishiyayi is a young girl who refuses to succumb to the temptations of premarital sex. Instead she maintains her faith in virtue, preserving her virginity like a precious bouquet she hopes to present to her husband one day. However as time passes and the tender man she has patiently waited for fails to materialize, Mishiyayi begins to despair both physically and emotionally. Odila is another girl who defies the sexually oppressive status quo of her station in life. At the age of 10 she runs away from her native village and its tradition of female circumcision, eventually taking refuge in Tshijimba. But while living amongst the Tshijimban women she discovers that they are silently enduring a different kind of traditional drama, one that she refuses to ignore. The Dilemma of an African Virgin is a captivating novel that exposes the deep-seated attitudes towards female sexuality in Africa and how they vary from tribe to tribe, village to village and clan to clan. Author Georges Kabongo-Mubalamate is a native of Africa who came to the U.S. in 1995 as a political refugee through the UNHCR. Currently a resident of South Portland, Maine, Georges is a scientist who works in biotechnology. Book The Eloquence of Silence

Download or read book The Eloquence of Silence written by Marnia Lazreg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eloquence of Silence makes a critical departure from more traditional studies of Algerian women--which usually examine female roles in relation to Islam--and instead takes an interdisciplinary look at the subject, arguing that Algerian women's roles are shaped by a variety of structural and symbolic factors. These elements include colonial domination, demographic change, nationalism, socialist development policy of the 1960s and 70s, family formation and the progressive shift to a capitalist economy. Covering both pre-colonial and colonial eras as well as the independence period, this book focuses on the changes that took place in family structure and law, customs, education, and the war of decolonization as they affected gender relations. Marnia Lazreg approaches the post-colonial era through an examination of how Algeria's model of economic development, structural adjustment policies, and the rise of religious-political opposition affected women's lives.
