Book excerpt: Cade Knight was not impressed by the idea of attending yet another Halloween party in Nowhere, Wyoming. Cade knew what was expected of him—as the most prominent rancher, businessman, and bachelor in his diminutive hometown, he needed to make at least an appearance at Mrs. Dietrich's annual costume ball. While he always felt just a little bit ridiculous when dressing up, there was a silver lining to the evening: Mrs. Dietrich had promised him to find a new cook for the Double K Ranch, his beloved ranch and the center of his business empire. The ranch still had not recovered from the uncouth Delilah Willglen, whose foul mouth and propensity for thievery, lying, and eating on the job had left the kitchen a wreck and a ranch full of hungry cowpokes. Margo Benchley would rather be anywhere than Nowhere, Wyoming. After escaping a sordid past in Seattle, Margo found herself penniless and on the verge of hopelessness. In her desperation she accepted a job with the only caterer in town – Delilah Willglen. Delilah's cruelty knew no ends as she constantly found a way to express her own insecurities on the beautiful Margo. As the biggest party of the year approached, Margo could hardly look herself in the mirror as she put on the overly revealing Old West saloon girl costume. She couldn't help but wait for her knight in shining armor to rescue her from the dreadfulness. As a round of guests all dressed as James Garner characters entered, the thought of anything productive coming from this evening seemed remote at best. As the straight-laced but introverted Cade approached the bar looking for something to make the crowd a bit more tolerable, he had no idea that the strikingly beautiful bartender was actually a warrior of a woman who would forever change The Double K Ranch.

Book Under Mountain Shadows

Download or read book Under Mountain Shadows written by William D. Frank and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From her world-famous dude ranch in Washington state's Yakima County, Kay Kershaw exerted tremendous influence on conservation efforts in the Pacific Northwest and, tangentially, on LGBTQ+ rights in the United States. After gaining local renown in sports and aviation, she established the ranch at Goose Prairie with her first partner, Pat Kane--a fraught undertaking in a region closely associated with the John Birch Society. Operating under the guise of two "spinsters," Kershaw and her later life-partner Isabelle Lynn guarded their privacy closely, but local encroachment by the U.S. Forest Service and the timber industry forced them into the public arena as environmentalists. In partnership with Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, Kershaw and Lynn spearheaded a decades-long campaign to save the ancient forests and ecosystem of Washington's Cascade Range. In the process, Kay and Isabelle's devoted relationship proved a marked contrast to Justice Douglas' own turbulent love life, perhaps affecting his perception of the law and his precedent-setting judicial opinion in Griswold v. Connecticut (1965), which provided the basis for major LGBTQ+ Supreme Court decisions in the twenty-first century as well as Roe v. Wade in 1973.

Book Citizen Justice

Download or read book Citizen Justice written by Mary Margaret McKeown and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2022-09 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas was a giant in the legal world, even if he is often remembered for his four wives, as a potential vice-presidential nominee, as a target of impeachment proceedings, and for his tenure as the longest-serving justice from 1939 to 1975. His most enduring legacy, however, is perhaps his advocacy for the environment. Douglas was the spiritual heir to early twentieth-century conservation pioneers such as Teddy Roosevelt and John Muir. His personal spiritual mantra embraced nature as a place of solitude, sanctuary, and refuge. Caught in the giant expansion of America's urban and transportation infrastructure after World War II, Douglas became a powerful leader in forging the ambitious goals of today's environmental movement. And, in doing so, Douglas became a true citizen justice. In a way unthinkable today, Douglas ran a one-man lobby shop from his chambers at the U.S. Supreme Court, bringing him admiration from allies in conservation groups but raising ethical issues with his colleagues. He became a national figure through his books, articles, and speeches warning against environmental dangers. Douglas organized protest hikes to leverage his position as a national icon, he lobbied politicians and policymakers privately about everything from logging to highway construction and pollution, and he protested at the Supreme Court through his voluminous and passionate dissents. Douglas made a lasting contribution to both the physical environment and environmental law--with trees still standing, dams unbuilt, and beaches protected as a result of his work. His merged roles as citizen advocate and justice also put him squarely in the center of ethical dilemmas that he never fully resolved. Citizen Justice elucidates the why and how of these tensions and their contemporary lessons against the backdrop of Douglas's unparalleled commitment to the environment.

Guthrie Jr. and Larry McMurtry” (Hampton Sides). Now McGarrity continues his richly authentic epic of life on the last vestiges of the twentieth-century American frontier. Scarred by the loss of an older brother he idolized, estranged from a father he barely knows, and deeply troubled by the failing health of a mother he adores, young Matthew Kerney is suddenly and irrevocably forced to set aside his childhood and take on responsibilities far beyond his years. When the world spirals into the Great Depression and drought settles like a plague over the nation, Matt must abandon his own dreams to salvage the Kerney ranch. Plunged into a deep trough of dark family secrets, hidden crimes, broken promises, and lies, Matt must struggle to survive on the unforgiving, sun-blasted Tularosa Basin.
