Book excerpt: Though only three were produced in late-1920s/early-1930s Germany, the Dornier Do X was the largest flying boat of its time and flew passengers on international flights in extreme comfort during the pre-World War II years. Powered by twelve engines, the aircraft could accommodate over 100 passengers and crew and included sleeping and dining areas. This detailed and highly illustrated book covers the design, development and construction of the Do X, then explores its initial testing and short but historic use as an international airliner, and lastly discusses the ultimate fate of all three examples. The superb collection of photographs includes rare images of the Do X's construction, flights, crew, and luxurious fittings - including many of its interior features, furniture, vintage ephemera and place settings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developed by one of the most famous German airplane manufacturing companies at the request of Yugoslavia, the Dornier Do 22 was never adopted by the Luftwaffe and was condemned to obscurity as one of the peripheral airplane types. With only 29 manufactured in total, including the sole prototype, Do 22 was not a major success for Dornier-Werke. As such, it did not get the attention it deserved in the history of aviation. Its distinct service with the air forces of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, Kingdom of Greece and Finland was to date only covered superficially. No written work was published compiling and shedding light on the entire history, development, use by the three countries and the subsequent fate of the Dornier Do 22.

Book Dornier Do 17 Units of World War 2

Download or read book Dornier Do 17 Units of World War 2 written by Chris Goss and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Initially designed as a high-speed mail aeroplane and airliner, the Do 17 first made an appearance as a military aircraft in the Spanish Civil War, both as a bomber and in reconnaissance roles. In the early stages of World War II, it, together with the Heinkel He 111, formed the backbone of the German bomber arm over Poland, France, Belgium and the Low Countries, and saw action in almost every major campaign in this period. However, by the start of the Battle of Britain, the Do 17's limited range and small bomb load meant that it was ripe for replacement by the Ju 88. Though it performed well at lower altitudes, the model suffered heavy losses during raids, particularly during the Blitz and were increasingly phased out. This fully illustrated study uses detailed full-colour artwork and authoritative text from an expert author to tell the full operation story of one of Nazi Germany's best light bombers from the early years of World War II.

Book Flying Boats Seaplanes

Download or read book Flying Boats Seaplanes written by Stéphane Nicolaou and published by Zenith Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with races that were staged at elegant French resorts in the early part of the century, flying boats and seaplanes have played an integral part in aviation history. World War I spurred the development of these machines, and by the 1930s, flying boats and seaplanes had become pioneers in transcontinental flight. This photo-filled history recalls the role of flying boats and seaplanes in civil and military aviation history, and the enthusiasm of the engineers and pilots who are associated with their development. In addition to the golden years of hydraviation prior to World War II, author Nicolaou examines the decline of the seaplane, and its subsequent renaissance in nations that are today considered seaplane paradises. The saga is illustrated by more than 200 rare photographs uncovered in archives around the globe.

Download or read book Dornier Do 335 written by Robert Forsyth and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dornier Do 335 was conceived as a high-speed, all-weather fighter, and represented the pinnacle of piston-engined aircraft design. The Do 335 was a big aircraft, weighing just over 10,000kg when laden with fuel, equipment, and pilot, yet powered by two Daimler-Benz DB 603 engines, it was capable of reaching a maximum speed of 750km/h at 6400 meters, making it the fastest piston engine aircraft produced in Germany during World War II. Some forty aircraft were built between late 1943 and the end of the war, and it was intended to deploy the type as a day fighter, bomber, night fighter, bad weather interceptor, and reconnaissance aircraft, all of which were intended to incorporate the latest armament, bomb sights, communications, and radar equipment, as well as an ejector seat. Featuring archive photography and specially commissioned artwork, this is the full story of the aircraft that the Luftwaffe hoped would turn the tide of the war.

Book Fokker D XXI Aces of World War 2

Download or read book Fokker D XXI Aces of World War 2 written by Kari Stenman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-04-20 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dutch D.XXIs saw less than a week of action following the German invasion of the west on 10 May 1940, with many of the country's 28 fighters being destroyed on the ground. However, those that survived the initial onslaught inflicted losses on the Luftwaffe. By then, however, the D.XXI had found everlasting fame in Finland during the Winter War of 1939-40. Proving itself a real thorn in the side of the Soviets, the fighter, operating in primitive conditions and against vastly superior numbers, Finnish D.XXIs racked up an incredible score against the Red Air Force. The D.XXI also has the distinction of producing the first 'ace in a single mission' in World War 2, when then 1Lt Jorma Sarvanto shot down six Ilyushin DB-3 bombers on 6 January 1940. After spending a year providing home defence and flying coastal patrols during the early stages of the Continuation War in 1941, all surviving Finnish Fokker D.XXIs were relegated to the reconnaissance role, which they performed through to the end of hostilities in September 1944.

Book Dornier Do 24 Units

Download or read book Dornier Do 24 Units written by Peter de Jong and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated history of a remarkable aircraft, the Dornier Do 24, which served both military and humanitarian purposes. Perhaps the most seaworthy flying boat ever built, the elegant, tri-motor Dornier Do 24 served with both the Allied and Axis forces in very different parts of the globe during World War 2, garnering an excellent reputation along the way. This study uses archival records, first-hand accounts and revealing photographs to illuminate the combat career of this remarkable aircraft for the first time in English. The German-built Do 24 was the Netherlands Navy's principal aerial asset during the Japanese invasion of the East Indies. While the survivors of that ordeal served in the Australian Air force, in occupied Holland and France production continued apace and the Do 24 equipped the German Air-Sea rescue service, whose crews loved and respected the machine. The type witnessed the rise and fall of the Luftwaffe over all the European seas, took part in the desperate evacuations of Wehrmacht troops on the Baltic in the face of the overwhelming Soviet advance, and was pressed out of service only with the withdrawal of Spanish Do 24s in 1969. This volume tells the long and eventful story of the faithful Do 24 in full.
