Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eBook edition of "Divine Comedy (Illustrated Edition)" has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. The Divine Comedy is widely considered to be the preeminent work in Italian literature and one of the greatest works of world literature. The poem's imaginative vision of the afterlife is representative of the medieval world-view of the 14th century. The first-person narrative describes Dante's travels through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise or Heaven, while allegorically the poem represents the soul's journey towards God. In Dante's work, Virgil is presented as human reason and Beatrice is presented as divine knowledge. This edition contains the famed illustrations by Gustave Doré which is matched by the inimitable translation of H. W. Longfellow, the first and formidable American translator of the Divine Comedy who is still considered as one of the best translators of this great classic.

Book Dante s Divine Comedy

Download or read book Dante s Divine Comedy written by Seymour Chwast and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-12-16 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "left-handed designer," Seymour Chwast has been putting his unparalleled take-and influence-on the world of illustration and design for the last half century. In his version of Dante's Divine Comedy, Chwast's first graphic novel, Dante and his guide Virgil don fedoras and wander through noir-ish realms of Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise, finding both the wicked and the wondrous on their way. Dante Alighieri wrote his epic poem The Divine Comedy from 1308 to 1321 while in exile from his native Florence. In the work's three parts (Inferno, Purgatory, and Paradise), Dante chronicles his travels throughthe afterlife, cataloging a multitude of sinners and saints-many of them real people to whom Dante tellingly assigned either horrible punishment or indescribable pleasure-and eventually meeting both God and Lucifer face-to-face. In his adaptation of this skewering satire, Chwast creates a visual fantasia that fascinates on every page: From the multifarious torments of the Inferno to the host of delights in Paradise, his inventive illustrations capture the delirious complexity of this classic of the Western canon.

Book The Divine Comedy Illustrated by Gustave Dore

Download or read book The Divine Comedy Illustrated by Gustave Dore written by Dante Alighieri and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-02-07 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We, Leopold Publishing, set for ourselves the objective of publishing the best version of the Divine Comedy. By best, we mean quality in prose, aesthetics in presentation, typography and engraving for its plates, of course. But, as the Divine Comedy is a story Dante wrote in a cryptic fashion not every reader can fully understand today, we managed to add to it as many commentaries and explanations as necessary to solve this problem. In the end, we obtained: a translation in blank verse in the style of Milton by Rev. Henry Francis Cary (which was the first complete English translation of the greatest works of Dante); each canto begins with a synopsis (equally presents in the table of contents); 2140 technical and historical footnotes; 50 pages of explanatory introduction written by great Italian specialist of Dante, Francesco Flamini (translated by Freeman M. Josselyn), which is illustrated with numerous technical diagrams and sketches; and, of course, all plates great French artist Gustave Doré did for the Divine Comedy between 1857 and 1867. As a matter of fact, the original English version of the Divine Comedy illustrated by Gustave Doré was M. Cary's translation. To those who are familiar with the translation Cary did of the Divine Comedy, we find useful to precise that the text we chose for this book is his third edition of it; so with all typos and mistakes fixed with the help of famous English translator John Aitken Carlyle. To those who are familiar with the plates Gustave Doré drew for the Divine Comedy, we scanned ours from original printings of his 1857 (Inferno) and 1867 (Purgatorio and Paradiso) editions before we carefully restored them, fixed small scratches and various printing imperfections visible on any original copies. We also reviewed their contrasts (real black inking instead of gray) so as to restitute their depths often lost due to insufficient inking during the printing process. Also, we opted for a large format (8.5 x 11 inches for 4 pounds of weight). As an aside, some readers might be surprised to discover in this text numerous symbolical allusions, references and cryptic descriptions belonging to the realm of masonry and its rites, written several centuries before the appearance of the first masonic lodges in England in early 1700's.

Book The Illustrations of Gustave Dore for the Divine Comedy

Download or read book The Illustrations of Gustave Dore for the Divine Comedy written by Gustave Dore and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-03-23 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hundred and thirty-six illustrations of this book in large format have been originally done for the French and American editions of the Divine Comedy, between the years 1857 and 1868. That is to say: the portrait of Dante Alighieri (page 1); 75 illustrations for the Inferno; 42 for the Purgatorio; and 18 for the Paradiso. In the American version, the English translation of the famous poem of Dante was the first ever done in this tongue, by Rev. Henry Francis Cary. This edition presents these plates in their original order, of course: Inferno (Hell), Purgatorio (Purgatory) and Paradiso (Heaven). However, we added three more illustrations to illustrate the introduction pages of each of these three parts, beautifully drawn by famous Irish artist Phoebe Anna Traquair in 1890. To each of the Doré's illustrations, we added the numbers of the cantos and of the verses they are supposed to illustrate. Thus, you will easily establish the correct correspondence between each and every picture and any original Italian version or English translation of the Divine Comedy. We also added to them the same corresponding excerpts of their cantos you could find in any original American version of the book (in two vol.: 1. Inferno [1861]; 2. Purgatorio and Paradiso [1868])-inasmuch as the verses of your version of this book are numbered, of course. To those who are already familiar with the pictures Gustave Doré drew for the Divine Comedy: we scanned ours from original printings before we carefully restored them and "cleaned" small scratches and various printing imperfections visible on any original copies. We also reviewed their contrasts (real black inking instead of gray) so as to restitute their depths often lost due to insufficient inking during the printing process of the 19th century. That's why and how they seem to be of a higher quality than in any original printing.

Some translations are so elaborate that they are as difficult to read as the original Italian version. This translation uses the Longfellow translation as a base, but replaces the obscure or antiquated verbiage with the language of Modern English. This translation could easily be read and understood by today's reader. Adding the illustrations by Gustave Dore brings this classic work to life.
