Book The Doomsday Lobby

  • Author : James T. Bennett
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

  • ISBN : 1441966854
  • Pages : 209 pages

Download or read book The Doomsday Lobby written by James T. Bennett and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-11 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Federal patronage of science was never contemplated by the framers of the Constitution, but they did seek to “promote the Progress of Science and useful Art” by granting inventors patent rights. However, direct subvention to scientists and scientific organizations was not considered appropriate activity of the central government. In the 19th Century, American science was funded almost entirely through private investors. Since WWII, however, the federal government has become the primary patron of American science. From the race-to-space in the 1950s to current furor over global warming, Bennett traces the subtle and not-so-subtle ways in which government has co-opted scientific research and reinforced a culture in which challengers to proscribed wisdom are frozen out. Citing original documents and media reports, Bennett offers a compelling, entertaining, and thought-provoking perspective on political influence on scientific research and its implications for a democratic society. "During the Nineteenth Century, almost entirely on private funding, American science grew from practically nothing to world class. Now, however, over fifty percent of American science is funded by the federal government. Dr. Bennett traces the path, "crisis" after "crisis," by which American science became practically an arm of the federal government. His tale is a cautionary one, warning against future "crisis mongers" who would extend the government's already majority control of American science even further. His warning is a timely one, and it should be heeded." Joseph P. Martino, author of Science Funding: Politics and Porkbarrel "Bennett's latest book offers a challenging interpretation of the rise of the American federal science establishment since World War II. Focusing primarily on the growth of the space program, Bennett argues that crisis, real or imagined, is the source of state power and state funding for science. The Doomsday Lobby offers what no doubt will be viewed as a controversial contribution to the history of American science policy, and more broadly to an understanding of the role of the state in society." James D. Savage, Professor of Politics, University of Virginia, and author of Funding Science in America

Book Touwa and the Dusty Road Travelled

Download or read book Touwa and the Dusty Road Travelled written by Dr. P V Mroso and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-10-24 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro offer a fertile land, a cool climate, and an abundance of water that over many years wars were fought in attempts to conquer and settle. The people living on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro are the Chagga. Historically, there were many alliances that led to security, but also there were betrayals that led to division into small kingdoms ruled by chiefs locally known as mangi. At the end of the wars, the slopes were divided into three major areas named Rombo, Vunjo, and Hai, each ruled by a number of mangi. The seniority of each mangi was measured by his wealth. The population increased rapidly as peace was established. The people on the slopes of the mountain live very closely, packed with water and road facilities comparable to a large metropolitan city, but only with trees and foliage, not concrete. First, Hai was highly populated, followed by Vunjo, but Rombo was sparsely populated as it was the leeward side of the mountain. Before the time of Touwa schooldays, the Nanjara village, which is in Rombo, was a prime area for land ownership such that Europeans were in pursuit to grab some of that land. It was in that state of competition that the local mangi sent vanguards like Touwas grandfather and many others to occupy the land to prevent European settlement. That was how the Nanjara village came to existence. The Chagga people have basically one culture, one language with area-based differences of accents, and Nanjara village life could reflect life for all Chagga people.

Book Psychosomatic Disorders

Download or read book Psychosomatic Disorders written by Autumn Libal and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-09-02 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our bodies are constantly reacting to mental stimulation. When reliving the winning goal you made in the hockey game, your face might flush, heart race, and muscles tense. A child who is being bullied at school might feel sick every morning before leaving home. A passionate kiss in the movies might make your own lips tingle. These are examples of psychosomatic reactions: physical reactions to mental or emotional symptoms. Sometimes a person's psychosomatic reaction to mental stress may be so severe that it causes a debilitating disorder. For example, Kevin sometimes still has trouble believing his leg is truly gone. He has strange sensations that he cannot account for. Some are unpleasant, like the constant itching where he no longer has a place to itch. Others are nice surprises, like when he can feel his cat brushing against where his leg should be. The worst, however, is the pain. For the all other inexplicable feelings that come and go, the pain never leaves Kevin's body or mind. Sometimes in the dark quiet of his bedroom, he has nightmares in which he relives stepping on the land mine. Only in his nightmares, everything happens in slow motion. He can see his leg tearing away from his body. He reaches forward, grabbing for his leg, and the excruciating pain wakes him up. He lies, panting in the darkness, trying to will the pain away, asking himself, "How can something that doesn't even exist hurt so badly?" How can doctors treat the pain and illness in the body that are caused by the mind? In this book, you will learn more about Kevin's story, what psychosomatic disorders are, how these "phantom" disorders can be treated.

Book Rod Serling

Download or read book Rod Serling written by Nicholas Parisi and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before anyone had heard of alien cookbooks, gremlins on the wings of airplanes, or places where pig-faced people are considered beautiful, Rod Serling was the most prestigious writer in American television. As creator, host, and primary writer for The Twilight Zone, Serling became something more: an American icon. When Serling died in 1975, at the age of fifty, he was the most honored, most outspoken, most recognizable, and likely the most prolific writer in television history. Though best known for The Twilight Zone, Serling wrote over 250 scripts for film and television and won an unmatched six Emmy Awards for dramatic writing for four different series. His filmography includes the acclaimed political thriller Seven Days in May and cowriting the original Planet of the Apes. In great detail and including never-published insights drawn directly from Serling’s personal correspondence, unpublished writings, speeches, and unproduced scripts, Nicholas Parisi explores Serling’s entire, massive body of work. With a foreword by Serling’s daughter, Anne Serling, Rod Serling: His Life, Work, and Imagination is part biography, part videography, and part critical analysis. It is a painstakingly researched look at all of Serling’s work—in and out of The Twilight Zone.
