Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Britain’s desperate defensive operations against the Nazis’ V1 flying bombs in 1944. In the summer of 1944, the Germans launched more than 10,000 flying bombs at Britain, most of them toward London—which had already endured the Blitz in the earlier phase of the war. Thousands of people were killed, and many more injured. RAF fighter pilots flew round the clock patrols, desperately trying to shoot the robot rockets known as V1s down and stop them from reaching their targets. This history recounts the horrors of these raids and the defenses Britain used against them, both on the ground and in the air—as a weary but determined nation once again battled Nazi terror from above. • Author : Andrew Thomas
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2013-09-20
  • ISBN : 1780962940

Download or read book V1 Flying Bomb Aces written by Andrew Thomas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-20 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly after the Allied landings in France the Germans unleashed the first of their so-called 'revenge weapons', the V1 flying bomb. Launched from specially constructed sites in northern France, the fast, small, pulse-jet powered pilotless aircraft were aimed at London with the sole intent of destroying civilian morale to the point where the British government would be forced to sue for peace. This dangerous new threat drew an immediate response, and the Air Defence of Great Britain (as Fighter Command had been temporarily renamed) established layers of defence that included a gun line and balloon barrage. The main element, however, were standing patrols by the fastest piston-engined fighters available to the RAF – the new Tempest V and Griffon-powered Spitfire XIV. Other types were allocated too, most notably the Polish Mustang wing, while night defence was left in the capable hands of several dedicated Mosquito squadrons. Although pilotless, the V1 was no easy foe thanks to its speed, powerful warhead and sheer unpredictability. Nevertheless, 154 pilots became V1 aces, 25 of whom were also aces against manned aircraft.

Book The V1 Flying Bomb Campaign 1944 1945

Download or read book The V1 Flying Bomb Campaign 1944 1945 written by Jan Gore and published by Pen & Sword Military. This book was released on 2024-10-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new study, Jan Gore assesses the success of the V1 campaign. The background to the development of the V1 will be examined, from the initial references to a mystery weapon to the gradual realisation by the British that the Germans were planning both a flying bomb (V1) and a long range rocket (V2). Once the first V1 sites were identified, the British began a strategic bombing campaign, later joined by the Americans. However, as the Normandy landings became imminent in June 1944, Hitler realised he had nothing to lose by delaying his vengeance attacks. A week after D-Day, the first V1s began to reach England. The attacks swiftly intensified. It was a very different campaign from those before. The pilotless planes could be produced cheaply and there was no need to put expensively-trained pilots at risk. The planes could be launched by day or night, whatever the weather. They were true terror weapons, as the first-hand accounts of those who lived through the attacks make clear; there was very little notice that a doodlebug explosion was imminent and so it was almost impossible to take cover. The book describes the first weekend of the attacks with the bombing of the Guards' Chapel, the evacuation program which followed, and the UK's defense strategies. It goes on to discuss the second phase of the attacks, including the planned bombing of Manchester, and the third phase of the campaign, where V1s were ground-launched from the Netherlands.

Book British Home Defences 1940 45

Download or read book British Home Defences 1940 45 written by Bernard Lowry and published by Osprey Publishing. This book was released on 2004-05-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1940, Britain asked itself not 'will Hitler invade?' but 'when?' SEALION, the German invasion plan, provoked the construction of pillboxes, coastal defences, heavy-gun emplacements and anti-aircraft batteries, as well as the formation of the Home Guard and covert groups. Later, new dangers replaced SEALION: radar detection systems were expanded during the Blitz years, as were intelligence-gathering systems and listening posts. From 1944, Britain was again faced with a deadly threat, Hitler's 'Vengeance weapons'. This title provides a concise assessment of Britain's defensive systems, and presents a vivid picture of war on the home front.

Book The Blitz Companion

  • Author : Mark Clapson
  • Publisher : University of Westminster Press
  • Release : 2019-04-02
  • ISBN : 1911534491
  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book The Blitz Companion written by Mark Clapson and published by University of Westminster Press. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Blitz Companion offers a unique overview of a century of aerial warfare, its impact on cities and the people who lived in them. It tells the story of aerial warfare from the earliest bombing raids and in World War 1 through to the London Blitz and Allied bombings of Europe and Japan. These are compared with more recent American air campaigns over Cambodia and Vietnam in the 1960s and 1970s, the NATO bombings during the Balkan Wars of the 1990s, and subsequent bombings in the aftermath of 9/11. Beginning with the premonitions and predictions of air warfare and its terrible consequences, the book focuses on air raids precautions, evacuation and preparations for total war, and resilience, both of citizens and of cities. The legacies of air raids, from reconstruction to commemoration, are also discussed. While a key theme of the book is the futility of many air campaigns, care is taken to situate them in their historical context. The Blitz Companion also includes a guide to documentary and visual resources for students and general readers. Uniquely accessible, comparative and broad in scope this book draws key conclusions about civilian experience in the twentieth century and what these might mean for military engagement and civil reconstruction processes once conflicts have been resolved.
