Book The Dominion of Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Dominion of Man Classic Reprint written by J. G. Wood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dominion of Man What is signified by Dominion? - Its various manifestations - The power to kill and the power to tame - Primitive man and the contemporary animals - The mastodon - Mammoth and elephant - The primitive horse - Ancient artists - Modern horses - Traction and burden - The horse a beast of chase - The Stone Age of the present day - Ethnology and Zoology - The Australian compared with the Indian and negro. As far as we know, there has never existed any race of mankind which has not in some way exercised that dominion over the lower animals to which man is entitled by virtue of his birth. Even among the earliest pre-historic races there is sufficient evidence to show that, although the wild animals which existed in those remote ages were larger, more powerful, more numerous, and, in all probability, more formidable antagonists than any which are found at the present day, man could not only cope with them but overcome them. Book excerpt: A "marvelous" (Economist) account of how the Christian Revolution forged the Western imagination. Crucifixion, the Romans believed, was the worst fate imaginable, a punishment reserved for slaves. How astonishing it was, then, that people should have come to believe that one particular victim of crucifixion-an obscure provincial by the name of Jesus-was to be worshipped as a god. Dominion explores the implications of this shocking conviction as they have reverberated throughout history. Today, the West remains utterly saturated by Christian assumptions. As Tom Holland demonstrates, our morals and ethics are not universal but are instead the fruits of a very distinctive civilization. Concepts such as secularism, liberalism, science, and homosexuality are deeply rooted in a Christian seedbed. From Babylon to the Beatles, Saint Michael to #MeToo, Dominion tells the story of how Christianity transformed the modern world.

Book excerpt: "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." --Genesis 1:24-26 In this crucial passage from the Old Testament, God grants mankind power over animals. But with this privilege comes the grave responsibility to respect life, to treat animals with simple dignity and compassion. Somewhere along the way, something has gone wrong. In Dominion, we witness the annual convention of Safari Club International, an organization whose wealthier members will pay up to $20,000 to hunt an elephant, a lion or another animal, either abroad or in American "safari ranches," where the animals are fenced in pens. We attend the annual International Whaling Commission conference, where the skewed politics of the whaling industry come to light, and the focus is on developing more lethal, but not more merciful, methods of harvesting "living marine resources." And we visit a gargantuan American "factory farm," where animals are treated as mere product and raised in conditions of mass confinement, bred for passivity and bulk, inseminated and fed with machines, kept in tightly confined stalls for the entirety of their lives, and slaughtered in a way that maximizes profits and minimizes decency. Throughout Dominion, Scully counters the hypocritical arguments that attempt to excuse animal abuse: from those who argue that the Bible's message permits mankind to use animals as it pleases, to the hunter's argument that through hunting animal populations are controlled, to the popular and "scientifically proven" notions that animals cannot feel pain, experience no emotions, and are not conscious of their own lives. The result is eye opening, painful and infuriating, insightful and rewarding. Dominion is a plea for human benevolence and mercy, a scathing attack on those who would dismiss animal activists as mere sentimentalists, and a demand for reform from the government down to the individual. Matthew Scully has created a groundbreaking work, a book of lasting power and importance for all of us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Son of the Old Dominion One soft yet brilliant day of spring found Captain Geoffry Flower - as handsome a young sprig of His Majesty King George III.'s Royal Dragoons as one would be likely to see in a month o' Sundays - riding along the shady road of a wooded ridge on the west bank of the Potomac in Virginia. Cap-a-pie, the horseman was equipped with nice regard for the requirements of military undress in an officer of wealth and station; his rosy Saxon cheeks, his bright blue eyes, his athletic figure, his look of vigorous health; the mounted servant, the pack-horses carrying portmanteaux and sundry rich accoutrements - all these should have ensured their owner against a clouded brow. But to Flower the times were evidently out of joint; his open face wore something nearly akin to a blush, combined with something very like a frown. Here was his grievance. Book The Youth of the Old Dominion Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Youth of the Old Dominion Classic Reprint written by Samuel Hopkins and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Youth of the Old Dominion Many narratives of our early history which are particularly designed for novices are read as tasks, laid aside with a sense of weariness, and their statistical details soon forgotten. I venture an experiment, endeavoring to give to the Past the aspect and hue of Life, to excite a personal interest in events which would secure little or none as unclothed facts. For this purpose, something of fancy has been necessarily admitted, but all idea of fiction is seriously disclaimed. Any one familiar with the annals of youthful Virginia will here recognize, it is believed, a scrupulous regard to historic truth. A volume designed for popular reading need not be encumbered with references. They might have been given profusely, but will be found only where some statement in the text has seemed particularly to require them. Book Man s Dominion

Download or read book Man s Dominion written by Sheila Jeffreys and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this feminist critique of the politics of religion, Sheila Jeffreys argues that the renewed rise of religion is harmful to women’s human rights. The book seeks to rekindle the criticism of religion as the founding ideology of patriarchy. Focusing on the three monotheistic religions; Judaism, Christianity and Islam, this book examines common anti-women attitudes such as ‘male-headship’, impurity of women, the need to control women’s bodies, and their modern manifestations in multicultural Western states. It points to the incorporation of religious law into legal systems, faith schools, and campaigns led by Christian and Islamic organisations against women’s rights at the U.N., and explains how religious rights threaten to subvert women’s rights. Including highly-topical chapters on the burka and the covering of women, and polygamy, this text questions the ideology of multiculturalism which shields religion from criticism by demanding respect for culture and faith, whilst ignoring the harm that women suffer from religion. Man’s Dominion is an incisive and polemic text that will be of interest to students of gender studies, religion, and politics.

Book excerpt: C.J. Sansom rewrites history in a thrilling novel that dares to imagine Britain under the thumb of Nazi Germany. 1952. Twelve years have passed since Churchill lost to the appeasers and Britain surrendered to Nazi Germany. The global economy strains against the weight of the long German war against Russia still raging in the east. The British people find themselves under increasingly authoritarian rule -- the press, radio, and television tightly controlled, the British Jews facing ever greater constraints. But Churchill's Resistance soldiers on. As defiance grows, whispers circulate of a secret that could forever alter the balance of the global struggle. The keeper of that secret? Scientist Frank Muncaster, who languishes in a Birmingham mental hospital. Civil Servant David Fitzgerald, a spy for the Resistance and University friend of Frank's, is given the mission to rescue Frank and get him out of the country. Hard on his heels is Gestapo agent Gunther Hoth, a brilliant, implacable hunter of men, who soon has Frank and David's innocent wife, Sarah, directly in his sights. C.J. Sansom's literary thriller Winter in Madrid earned Sansom comparisons to Graham Greene, Sebastian Faulks, and Ernest Hemingway. Now, in his first alternative history epic, Sansom doesn't just recreate the past -- he reinvents it. In a spellbinding tale of suspense, oppression and poignant love, Dominion dares to explore how, in moments of crisis, history can turn on the decisions of a few brave men and women -- the secrets they choose to keep and the bonds they share.
