Download or read book Implementation of Integrated River Basin Management Local Context written by Md. Abdullah Abraham Hossain and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-07 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing international community of scholars who work on the integrated river basin management (IRBM) as a sub-set of the integrated water resources management (IWRM) at different scales. The Langat River Basin (LRB) is one of the main river basins in Malaysia where implementation of IWRM is a challenging task to attain sustainable development. IWRM is defined as a process to promote the coordinated development and management of water and related resources, in order to maximize the resultant economic and social welfare in an equitable manner without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystems. This book has been redacted from the thesis work on IRBM implementation in Langat River Basin of Malaysia. Mr. Hossain has conducted this research under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Mazlin Bin Mokhtar and Associate Prof. Dr. Mohd Ekhwan Hj. Toriman. Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) Framework has been used to analyze institution. Remote sensing and GIS techniques are utilized for the preparation of land use map of study area. Opinion survey was conducted and interpreted for policy forecast by utilizing regression model analysis.

Book Managing Water in River Basins

Download or read book Managing Water in River Basins written by M. Dinesh Kumar and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-23 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth analysis of existing methods of water management and highlights the gaps in the use of water in various river basins. Underlying the futility of 'quick fix' solutions, it puts forward various alternative strategies for water management. Using illustrative case studies, the author lists major challenges in water management: productivity improvement in key-use sectors, inter-sectoral allocation, trans-boundary resource management, and availability in deficient regions. Highlighting the opportunities for improving water productivity in agriculture, he also provides methodologies for generating country- and regional-level water balance scenarios. The volume also discusses the problems involved in allocating water in river basins. Kumar gives a detailed account of some of the widely known economic tools. He examines the institutional and policy measures for ensuring sustainable use of water and economic growth, including the creation of new organizations.

Book Informing Water Policies in South Asia

Download or read book Informing Water Policies in South Asia written by Anjal Prakash and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes water policies in South Asia from the perspective of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). It seeks to address the problems of water scarcity, conflict and pollution resulting from the gross mismanagement and over-exploitation of this finite resource. Highlighting the need for IWRM in mitigating abuse and ensuring sustainable use, it discusses issues relating to groundwater management; inter-state water conflicts; peri-urban water use; local traditional water management practices; coordination between water users and uses; and water integration at the grassroots level. With case studies from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Nepal, the innovative, painstaking and transnational researches presented in the volume deal with questions of equity, gender, sustainability, and democratic governance in water policy interventions. It will interest researchers and students of development studies, environmental studies, natural resource management, water governance, and public administration, as also water sector professionals, policymakers, civil society activists and governmental and nongovernmental organizations.

Book Water Resources Policies in South Asia

Download or read book Water Resources Policies in South Asia written by Anjal Prakash and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Falling or stagnant agricultural growth, increasing dependence on groundwater, climate variability, swift industrialization, and unplanned and unregulated urbanization in South Asia have spawned a variety of challenges for water resources governance, management and use: groundwater overdraft; insufficient, ill-managed and poor-quality freshwater supply vis-à-vis escalating demand; and water pollution. Water policies in each of the South Asian countries thus call for a more holistic understanding for the efficient management, equitable distribution and sustainable use of this scarce resource. Analyzing the economic, demographic and ideological context in which water policies are framed and implemented, this book argues for an integrated framework in formulating and implementing water policies in South Asia. It also highlights some common missing links in the national policies: problems of techno-centric and blueprint approach to water management, growing influence of international donor agencies and inadequate concern for issues such as equity, sustainability, gender sensitivity, accountability, regional diversity in property rights regimes and water management practices, and regional conflicts over water access. The innovative and nuanced knowledge on water resources produced from detailed case studies in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be useful for professionals, academics, policymakers and activists as well as those in development studies, environmental studies, natural resource management and public administration.

Book Water Resource Management in South Asia

Download or read book Water Resource Management in South Asia written by Anjal Prakash and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-05-29 with total page 1428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cluster of books presents innovative and nuanced knowledge on water resources, based on detailed case studies from South Asia—India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. In providing comprehensive analyses of the existing economic, demographic and ideological contexts in which water policies are framed and implemented, the volumes argue for alternative, informed and integrated approaches towards efficient management and equitable distribution of water. These also explore the globalization of water governance in the region, particularly in relation to new paradigms of neoliberalism, civil society participation, integrated water resource management (IWRM), public–private partnerships, privatization, and gender mainstreaming. These volumes will be indispensable for scholars and students of development studies, environmental studies, natural resource management, governance and public administration, particularly those working on water resources in South Asia. They will also be useful for policymakers and governmental and non-governmental organizations.
