Download or read book Canada s Oil Monopoly written by James Lorimer and published by Lorimer. This book was released on 1981 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the highlights of a 1,700 page government report on Imperial Oil, Gulf, Texaco, Shell, and other oil company operations in Canada from 1958 to 1973 - compiled from the more than 135,000 secret oil company documents that were seized by the government investigators in raids between 1973 and 1978. Taking eight years to piece together this startling picture of the inner workings of the powerful oil industry, the findings were submitted in a 1981 report on The State of Competition in the Canadian Petroleum Industry - and were immediately ordered to be made public by the Restrictive Trade Practices Commission.

Download or read book U S Health in International Perspective written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-04-12 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is among the wealthiest nations in the world, but it is far from the healthiest. Although life expectancy and survival rates in the United States have improved dramatically over the past century, Americans live shorter lives and experience more injuries and illnesses than people in other high-income countries. The U.S. health disadvantage cannot be attributed solely to the adverse health status of racial or ethnic minorities or poor people: even highly advantaged Americans are in worse health than their counterparts in other, "peer" countries. In light of the new and growing evidence about the U.S. health disadvantage, the National Institutes of Health asked the National Research Council (NRC) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to convene a panel of experts to study the issue. The Panel on Understanding Cross-National Health Differences Among High-Income Countries examined whether the U.S. health disadvantage exists across the life span, considered potential explanations, and assessed the larger implications of the findings. U.S. Health in International Perspective presents detailed evidence on the issue, explores the possible explanations for the shorter and less healthy lives of Americans than those of people in comparable countries, and recommends actions by both government and nongovernment agencies and organizations to address the U.S. health disadvantage.
Download or read book The Relationship Between FDI and the Natural Environment written by Pasquale Pazienza and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-02-06 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines in depth the relationship between foreign direct investment and the environment. Over the last few decades, increasing levels of environmental degradation have been recorded and have been claimed to be particularly attributable to globalization and the widespread increase of economic activities, in particular foreign direct investments (FDIs). However, the environmental implications of FDIs are not easily identified and contradictory views and arguments have been presented. This work contributes to the debate by closely analyzing the specific literature produced over the last three decades, and by presenting and discussing recent trends and prospects with regard to the FDI phenomenon.

Download or read book Environmental Risk and Corporate Behaviour written by Rui Xue and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-09-19 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accelerating global climate change risk highlights the importance of a quick transition towards a “cleaner” world. Although steady progress has already been made globally, substantial improvement cannot be achieved without sufficient financial support, especially during the post-COVID-19 recovery period, where countries worldwide have to prioritize the economic recovery which might limit the support for climate change mitigation and adaptation. Firms are the main greenhouse gas emitters and their contributions to the green transition thus are of vital importance to achieving a low-carbon transition. However, firms normally lack motivation to make green efforts, even worse, the business lockdowns and the supply chain disruptions during the pandemic have further weakened their already minimal commitment to mitigating climate change risks.

Book excerpt: Environmental Management Accounting (EMA) is increasingly recognised as a distinguished tool of environmental management. It helps to integrate a company's environmental and business interests, whereby enhancing corporate eco-efficiency in terms of reducing environmental costs or making one's product more competitive. This book gives a comprehensive coverage of the state of the art. It presents a number of EMA frameworks that companies can take as a basis for implementing their own specific EMA structures. Besides discussing environmental accounting issues within conventional management accounting, it gives a detailed picture of materials flow (cost) accounting as an alternative way of looking at the ecology-economy relationships at the corporate level. A fascinating case study shows how a large company (Siemens) applies materials flow accounting and what benefits it entails.
