Book Five Steps To The Perfect Pet

Download or read book Five Steps To The Perfect Pet written by Mike Deathe and published by Dogwise Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-24 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several years, I found there were five articles from my blog that became more and more popular. These five got more views, comments and results than any of my other articles. In fact, my first session with clients often focused on these five topics as a way to jump-start training and leadership not to mention helping with owner frustration. I even started carrying copies of these articles in my car to give clients after our sessions. Then, one day, a client made two observations that have stuck with me, and been repeated by a few others as well:

You know, everything you just taught me is really nothing more than common sense and I really should have been able to figure this out on my own . . .

AND

Why on earth have you not put these ideas into a book?

Well, that was about three years ago, during that time, we finished up our book on potty training - The Dog Owner’s Book of Poop and Pee - and also released a book for shelter volunteers called Forever Home . . . Dog Training 101 & How to be a Better Shelter Volunteer . Instead of taking a break and enjoying the fact that both were done, I instead sit here with the final draft of Five Steps to the Perfect Pet in my hand ...I hope it helps you as much as it did the clients that inspired me to write it!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

Download or read book Puppy Dog Potty Training written by Caryl Wolff and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this information-packed but lighthearted book (with lots of delightful pictures), puppy and dog training expert Caryl Wolff gives you an honest account of potty training. She says, "I chuckle when I read about programs that say 'Potty train your puppy in one week, ' or 'We guarantee that your puppy will be potty trained in five days, ' or something along those lines. What a huge selling point for them. You're either so frustrated because nothing else is working or you've been seduced by the title - so you purchase their book. Then somewhere in the text, there will be some sort of disclaimer saying that 'What we really mean is that we will tell you how to train your puppy. Since each puppy is different, and it may take yours a bit longer.' Huh? You bought the book because of the title and/or the supposed guarantee, and now the author is backtracking on the promise that was made. I adopted my two current dogs when they were about a year old, and it took two weeks to potty train them so they reliably pottied where I wanted - and I knew what I was doing. Not only did I have a plan (which you are going to get when you get this book), I followed it and made it a priority because, quite simply, I don't like to clean up pee and poop! The result? They've been with me four years now and have not pottied in the house - ever. If I can do it, so can you." This program works for puppies, newly adopted rescue dogs, or even adult dogs that have lived in your house for years. This method worked for an 11-year-old cocker spaniel whose pet parents *finally* had had enough! Here's what you get: *The Basic Program in 6 Easy Steps *Why What You Intend and How Your Dog Interprets It May Be Different *An Explanation of Why What You're Doing Isn't Working *Your Dog's Signals When He Has to Go *Solutions to Problems You May Run Into During Training *How to Properly Clean Up Accidents *The Right Way to Deal with Accidents (Don't expect perfection at the beginning!) *Potty Training Tips *and much MUCH MORE! Caryl Wolff knows what she is talking about. She has been training over 20 years and was the first dog trainer certified by five trainer organizations, has written 9 books, and has trained thousands of puppies and dogs. Book excerpt: An instructive and marvelously entertaining chronicle of a puppy's first year, by the executive editor of The New York Times One sparkling summer day, Jill Abramson brought home a nine-week-old golden retriever named Scout. Over the following year, as she and her husband raised their adorable new puppy, Abramson wrote a hugely popular column for The New York Times's website about the joys and challenges of training this rambunctious addition to their family. Dog-lovers from across the country inundated her with e-mails and letters, and the photos they sent in of their own dogs became the most visited photo album on the Times's site in 2009. Now Abramson has gone far beyond the material in her column and written a detailed and deeply personal account of Scout's first year. Part memoir, part manual, part investigative report, The Puppy Diaries continues Abramson's intrepid reporting on all things canine. Along the way, she weighs in on such issues as breeders or shelters, adoption or rescue, raw diet or vegan, pack-leader gurus like Cesar Millan or positive-reinforcement advocates like Karen Pryor. What should you expect when a new puppy enters your life? With utterly winning stories and a wealth of practical information, The Puppy Diaries provides an essential road map for navigating the first year of your dog's life.

Book Ask a Manager

Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Book Forever Home

  • Author : Mike Deathe
  • Publisher : Dogwise Publishing
  • Release : 2016-05-24
  • ISBN : 1619330202
  • Pages : 110 pages

Download or read book Forever Home written by Mike Deathe and published by Dogwise Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-24 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing this book has been a challenge and a pleasure all at the same time. As I read and edit it (for what seems the 150th time), I realize it is way more than a book on how to be a great shelter volunteer. It is really a book about dogs, dog training and the ability to relate to your dog without malice, over the top control or even dominance. I am very proud of the ideas here, and really hope that all the people that read this book rush out to their local shelter, sign up as a volunteer and make a difference. I also realize this book has the potential to help people inside their own home with their own dogs, leading to a happier home for everyone involved. Even at the time of writing this last chapter, I have no idea what the title of the book will be. It was originally to be titled "So You Want to Be a Shelter Volunteer", but in looking at the final product I think it covers way more than that.

I can only hope that you, the reader, agree. I ask you to take this information, share it, find someone to help or maybe even decide to go out and join the group of us that are lucky enough to work with dogs and their owners for a living. (Dog Trainer is really not accurate, since we are first and foremost people trainers!) Every author thinks, or at least hopes, that everything they write will be thought of as a "masterpiece"! I hold no such hopes. I know there are as many different ways to train a dog as there are types of dogs in the world. Rather, I hope you found a nugget or two in this book that you cannot wait to try. Thank you for supporting Keep it Simple Stupid (KISS) Dog Training and go out and make a difference with your own dog or others' dogs. In the end, it is all about saving more dogs and finding them their forever homes. I hope you find few ideas to try along the way. Mike Deathe CPDT-KA

  • Pages : 271 pages

Download or read book Pack of Two written by Caroline Knapp and published by Dial Press. This book was released on 2010-08-10 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of 36, Caroline Knapp, author of the acclaimed bestseller Drinking:A Love Story, found herself confronted with a monumental task: redefining her world. She had faced the loss of both her parents, given up a twenty-year relationship with alcohol, and, as she writes, "I was wandering around in a haze of uncertainty, blinking up at the biggest questions: Who am I without parents and without alcohol? How to form attachments, and where to find comfort, in the face of such daunting vulnerability?" An answer materialized in the most unlikely form: that of a dog. Eighteen months to the day after she quit drinking, Knapp stumbled upon an eight-week-old puppy at a local animal shelter, took her home, and named her Lucille. Now two years old, Lucille has become a central force in Knapp's life: "In her," she writes, "I have found solace, joy, a bridge to the world." Caroline Knapp has been celebrated as much for her fresh insight into emotional and psychological issues as she has been for her gifts as a writer. In Pack of Two, she brings the same perception and talent to bear on the rich, complicated terrain of human-animal relationships. In addition to mining her own experience with Lucille, Knapp speaks to a wide variety of dog people--from animal behaviorists and psychologists to other owners whose dogs have deeply affected their lives--about this emotionally complex, sometimes daunting, often profoundly healing alliance. Throughout, she explores the shift in canine roles from working partners to intimate companions and looks, too, at how this new kinship, this wordless bond, becomes a template for what we most desire ourselves.

Book excerpt: A classic he-said-she-said romantic comedy! This updated anniversary edition offers story-behind-the-story revelations from author Wendelin Van Draanen. The first time she saw him, she flipped. The first time he saw her, he ran. That was the second grade, but not much has changed by the seventh. Juli says: “My Bryce. Still walking around with my first kiss.” He says: “It’s been six years of strategic avoidance and social discomfort.” But in the eighth grade everything gets turned upside down: just as Bryce is thinking that there’s maybe more to Juli than meets the eye, she’s thinking that he’s not quite all he seemed. This is a classic romantic comedy of errors told in alternating chapters by two fresh, funny voices. The updated anniversary edition contains 32 pages of extra backmatter: essays from Wendelin Van Draanen on her sources of inspiration, on the making of the movie of Flipped, on why she’ll never write a sequel, and a selection of the amazing fan mail she’s received. Awards and accolades for Flipped: SLJ Top 100 Children’s Novels of all time IRA-CBC Children’s Choice IRA Teacher’s Choice Honor winner, Judy Lopez Memorial Award/WNBA Winner of the California Young Reader Medal “We flipped over this fantastic book, its gutsy girl Juli and its wise, wonderful ending.” — The Chicago Tribune “Van Draanen has another winner in this eighth-grade ‘he-said, she-said’ romance. A fast, funny, egg-cellent winner.” — SLJ, Starred review “With a charismatic leading lady kids will flip over, a compelling dynamic between the two narrators and a resonant ending, this novel is a great deal larger than the sum of its parts.” —Publishers Weekly, Starred review

Book The Koehler Method of Dog Training

Download or read book The Koehler Method of Dog Training written by William R. Koehler and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on 2016-04-09 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For generations, The Koehler Method of Dog Training has been a beacon of wisdom for dog owners seeking effective techniques to build a strong bond with their furry companions. William Koehler’s approach, rooted in respect for dogs’ intelligence, remains as relevant today as it was when the book first graced the shelves. Koehler believed that dogs could make choices and be held accountable for their behavior. His method follows the pattern of Action → Memory → Desire: dogs act, remember the outcomes, and form desires based on those experiences. Correcting behavior becomes fair, reasonable, and expected once the training has been successfully imparted. In this classic guide, you’ll find practical guidance for creating a well-behaved and happy canine companion. From basic obedience to advanced skills, The Koehler Method covers it all. Whether you’re a seasoned dog owner or a first-time puppy parent, discover the joy of training your dog using a method that respects their intelligence and fosters a lifelong partnership.
