Seymour, the son of former slaves, was the founder and pastor of the famed Azusa Street Mission in Los Angeles, California from 1906 until his death in 1922. Seymour was baptized in the Roman Catholic Church, converted in Methodism, sanctified in the Church of God Reformation movement, and then introduced to the Apostolic Faith or Pentecostal message in 1905. He took that message to Los Angeles in 1906. In addition to founding the mission at 312 Azusa Street, Seymour traveled and helped to establish and organize other missions across the country. The Doctrine and Discipline was intended to be a policy and polity guide for all the Apostolic Faith Missions under Seymour's guidance. It contains sections on doctrine, the Christian family, the church, the ministry, and other subjects. Also included are forms that Seymour used for weddings, funerals, the installation of church officers, and more. This is the only book ever written by Seymour. Published in 1915, the original book is extremely rare. This reprint makes the book available to the public for the first time in 85 years. Although Seymour's original thought is included, much of the book is a compilation from other church disciplines in the Wesleyan tradition. - Publisher.

Book excerpt: In Azusa Reimagined, Keri Day explores how the Azusa Street Revival of 1906, out of which U.S. Pentecostalism emerged, directly critiqued America's distorted capitalist values and practices at the start of the twentieth century. Employing historical research, theological analysis, and critical theory, Day demonstrates that Azusa's religious rituals and traditions rejected the racial norms and profit-driven practices that many white Christian communities gladly embraced. Through its sermons and social practices, the Azusa community critiqued racialized conceptions of citizenship that guided early capitalist endeavors such as world fairs and expositions. Azusa also envisioned deeper democratic practices of human belonging and care than the white nationalist loyalties early U.S. capitalism encouraged. In this lucid work, Day makes Azusa's challenge to this warped economic ecology visible, showing how Azusa not only offered a radical critique of racial capitalism but also offers a way for contemporary religious communities to cultivate democratic practices of belonging against the backdrop of late capitalism's deep racial divisions and material inequalities.

The connection between Pentecostalism and social change is a burgeoning line of inquiry, particularly in the Global South, but this study focuses on the history of Pentecostalism in the US, beginning with the production and circulation of the African American Spirituals. Bringing theories of affect into conversation with ritual studies, this interdisciplinary work traces personal stories and experiences from the author and examines them in light of Pentecostal traditions that stem from the Azusa Street Revival in Los Angeles, California, the birthplace of the Pentecostal movement. William J. Seymour’s vision at Azusa was egalitarian and transgressed the societal boundaries and norms of race and gender in the early twentieth century. Pentecostalism was and is informed by Black, queer, female, and other voices often silent or rendered invisible. Without this representation, Pentecostalism is simply one tradition among many co-opted and appropriated for the ongoing colonial projects of the modern Western world. Therefore, this book explores Blackpentecostal tradition: specifically, The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries (TFAM), a predominately Black LGBTQ+ movement that integrates Pentecostal worship and theology with an inclusive, liberative theology.

Gastón Espinosa provides new insight into the life and ministry of Seymour, the Azusa Street revival, and Seymour's influence on global Pentecostal origins. After defining key terms and concepts, he surveys the changing interpretations of Seymour over the past 100 years, critically engages them in a biography, and then provides an unparalleled collection of primary sources, all in a single volume. He pays particular attention to race relations, Seymour's paradigmatic global influence from 1906 to 1912, and the break between Seymour and Charles Parham, another founder of Pentecostalism. Espinosa's fragmentation thesis argues that the Pentecostal propensity to invoke direct unmediated experiences with the Holy Spirit empowers ordinary people to break the bottle of denominationalism and to rapidly indigenize and spread their message. The first census of the newly formed Los Angeles County in 1850 recorded only twelve Americans of African descent alongside a population of more than 3,500 Anglo Americans. Over the following seventy years, however, the African American founding families of Los Angeles forged a vibrant community within the increasingly segregated and stratified city. In this book, historian Marne L. Campbell examines the intersections of race, class, and gender to produce a social history of community formation and cultural expression in Los Angeles. Expanding on the traditional narrative of middle-class uplift, Campbell demonstrates that the black working class, largely through the efforts of women, fought to secure their own economic and social freedom by forging communal bonds with black elites and other communities of color. This women-led, black working-class agency and cross-racial community building, Campbell argues, was markedly more successful in Los Angeles than in any other region in the country. Drawing from an extensive database of all African American households between 1850 and 1910, Campbell vividly tells the story of how middle-class African Americans were able to live, work, and establish a community of their own in the growing city of Los Angeles.

Yet, the movement's defining doctrine has met with controversy and criticism since its inception. Classical Pentecostals have not only affirmed and valued the experience of speaking in other tongues, they have argued that such an experience is the first evidence of a Christian having reached a level of spiritual empowerment they call Baptism in the Holy Spirit. That speaking in an unknown language should be considered by many Pentecostals to be a normative and uniform right of passage for all Christians is interesting. That such a controversial doctrine could rise to take such a prominent role in defining and shaping the Pentecostal movement begs further historical and social study. This work charts the development of the doctrine from a small community in the Midwest to become a norm for Pentecostal identity and a hallmark of Pentecostal experience around the world. Then, through an empirical study of ministers in three Pentecostal denominations, the work explores the current beliefs of practices of Pentecostals regarding the doctrine of initial evidence in order to form some conclusions and proposals about the future of the doctrine among classical Pentecostals.
