Excerpt: ... effected, because no one could by other means have been reformed, and regenerated. This however was no longer impossible when the Lord had taken away all power from the devil, or hell, and had glorified his Humanity, that is, united it with the Divinity of his Father. For before, man could not be receptive of any Divine Truth, so as to be permanent with him, and still less any Divine Good; the devil, exerting a superior power over him, would have plucked it from his heart. From what has been said this conclusion may be drawn; that the Lord has not taken away sins by the passion of the cross, but takes them away, or removes them from those, who believe in Him, and live according to his commandments. The Lord teaches this in Matthew; "Think not that I am come to dissolve the Law, and "the Prophets; whosoever shall dissolve the least of "these commandments, and shall teach men so, he "shall be called the least in the kingdom of the "Heavens; but whosoever shall do and teach, he shall "be called great in the kingdom of the Heavens." v. 17- 19- Reason alone dictates, if it be but in some degree enlightened, that sins cannot be removed from man, unless by actual repentance, which consists in his seeing them, imploring the assistance of the Lord, and desisting from them. To see, believe, and teach otherwise, can neither be deduced from the Word, nor from sound reason, but from lust, and a depraved will, which constituting the selfhood of man, debases his intelligence to folly. m That imputation of the merit of the Lord, is the same as remission of sins after repent" ance. 18. It js believed in the church, that the Lord was sent by the Father to make an expiation for the human race, which was effected by the fulfilling of the law, and by...

Book New Worlds New Horizons in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Download or read book New Worlds New Horizons in Astronomy and Astrophysics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-02-04 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driven by discoveries, and enabled by leaps in technology and imagination, our understanding of the universe has changed dramatically during the course of the last few decades. The fields of astronomy and astrophysics are making new connections to physics, chemistry, biology, and computer science. Based on a broad and comprehensive survey of scientific opportunities, infrastructure, and organization in a national and international context, New Worlds, New Horizons in Astronomy and Astrophysics outlines a plan for ground- and space- based astronomy and astrophysics for the decade of the 2010's. Realizing these scientific opportunities is contingent upon maintaining and strengthening the foundations of the research enterprise including technological development, theory, computation and data handling, laboratory experiments, and human resources. New Worlds, New Horizons in Astronomy and Astrophysics proposes enhancing innovative but moderate-cost programs in space and on the ground that will enable the community to respond rapidly and flexibly to new scientific discoveries. The book recommends beginning construction on survey telescopes in space and on the ground to investigate the nature of dark energy, as well as the next generation of large ground-based giant optical telescopes and a new class of space-based gravitational observatory to observe the merging of distant black holes and precisely test theories of gravity. New Worlds, New Horizons in Astronomy and Astrophysics recommends a balanced and executable program that will support research surrounding the most profound questions about the cosmos. The discoveries ahead will facilitate the search for habitable planets, shed light on dark energy and dark matter, and aid our understanding of the history of the universe and how the earliest stars and galaxies formed. The book is a useful resource for agencies supporting the field of astronomy and astrophysics, the Congressional committees with jurisdiction over those agencies, the scientific community, and the public.

Book The Desert Railway

Download or read book The Desert Railway written by Brendon Judd and published by Penguin Books. This book was released on 2004 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the untold story of the hundreds of New Zealand railwaymen - shunters, builders, engine drivers, firemen, engineers - who answered the call to construct and operate a railway network in the Western Desert during the Second World War. Overlooked in other war histories, these men played a significant role in the Allied victory in North Africa. The desert railway became a crucial strategic operation, transporting soldiers, equipment and supplies to the front line, that the Germans were determined to destroy. The various challenges they faced, from relentless bombing, to the dreaded fifty-day-long khamseen winds, to the siege of Tobruk, culminated in the second Battle of El Alamein, during which Field Marshal Montgomery stated, 'Well, now it's the railway versus Rommel.' The Desert Railway is a tribute to the courage and enterprise of these railwaymen who kept the trains running no matter what.

Book A Preface to Chaucer

Download or read book A Preface to Chaucer written by Durant Waite Robertson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What were the medieval stylistic, aesthetic, and literary conventions that Chancer drew upon and knew that his audience would understand? In this rich study Mr. Robertson has included 118 illustrations-of medieval sculpture, cathedral interiors, illuminated manuscripts, paintings, ornamental devices and decorations-to show how these conventions affected the visual arts of Chaucer's time. Special attention is directed to fundamental differences between medieval and modern attitudes toward poetry, and to the significance of these differences for an approach to medieval art. By placing Chaucer fully in his own time, Mr. Robertson establishes new perspectives for understanding Chaucer’s poetry. His book is like a rich tapestry weaving together many threads.
