This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Doctrine of the Holy Eucharist, Vol. 2 of 2 In the sixteenth century the history of Eucharistic doctrine in the West presents new features. These are closely connected with the circumstances of the time. Results of much thought and many events of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries now made themselves felt. The invention of printing, the development of literature, the new methods of art, the revived study of Greek, the fresh access to the Fathers and to the sources of Church history, the progress of criticism, all that is associated with the work of the Humanists and the New Learning, the discoveries of explorers, the expansion of trade, social unrest, class hatreds, the growth of individualism in politics, - all these combined to produce in the early years of the sixteenth century a condition of affairs without previous parallel. The movement towards a wider learning, a more accurate scholarship, a greater fidelity to history, which had been begun by Robert Grosseteste and Roger Bacon in the thirteenth century, had made great advance. In the first twenty years of the sixteenth century there are notable landmarks of the study of theology in the printing of the Complutensian Polyglot under the directions of Cardinal Ximenes at Alcala in 1514, the publication by Erasmus of the first edition of his Greek Testament at Basle in 1516, the editing by Erasmus of St. Jerome and other Fathers, and the publication in 1516 of the Utopia of Sir Thomas More. In the activity of enterprise and investigation, of discovery and thought, of new knowledge and new methods, it was impossible that what was established and old should escape criticism and challenge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Body of Christ: An Enquiry Into the Institution and Doctrine of Holy Communion This enquiry into the institution and doctrine of the holy eucharist was first announced under the title of The Breaking of the Bread; but as it appeared that this title was already appropriated, The Body of Christ was chosen for a title, because it expresses two most important aspects of eucharistic truth. It expresses the nature of the gift presented to us in the sacrament (corpus Cliristi), and also the nature of the holy society of which it is the spiritual nourishment, and of which it is written, "Ye are the body of Christ." It is important in the case of any enquiry to state what is its point of departure. I wish therefore to make it plain at starting that I assume the belief in Christ expressed in the Nicene Creed, and I assume also the substantial truth of the passages in the New Testament which bear upon the institution of the eucharist. Book The Doctrine of the Catholic Church in England on the Holy Eucharist Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of the Catholic Church in England on the Holy Eucharist The following pages are intended to shew that certain doc trines and practices, particularly the Real Presence of our Blessed Lord in the Holy Eucharist, far from being inconsistent with subscription to the formularies of the Anglican Church, have been openly professed, defended, and authoritatively taught by many of its most illustrious divines. Some of the authors quoted actually took part in the compilation of our formularies, most of them were persons invested with episcopal authority, and all were of such a character as altogether to preclude the suspicion of their having subscribed to articles which they disbelieved, or thought in the slightest degree condemnatory of their principles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eucharistica or a Series of Pieces, Original and Translated, of the Most Holy and Adorable Sacrament of the Eucharist Since the great religious schism in the Catholic faith has been more violently attacked than the doctrine concerning the real presence of Jesus Christ in the sacrament of the Eucharist. The powers of darkness, as if jealous of the incomparable dignity which man derives from his union with God in this great mystery, seem to have concentrated all their force in opposition to its reception by mankind. On many other disputed subjects, our separated brethren may be easily open to conviction; in this alone they appear equally deaf to argument and reason. Book The Holy Eucharist Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Holy Eucharist Classic Reprint written by John Cuthbert Hedley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Eucharist This series of Handbooks is designed to meet a need, which, the Editors believe, has been widely felt, and which results in great measure from the predominant importance attached to Dogmatic and Moral Theology in the studies preliminary to the Priesthood. That the first place must of necessity be given to these subjects will not be disputed. But there re mains a large outlying field of professional knowledge which is always in danger of being crowde'd out in the years before ordination, and the practical utility Of which may not be fully realised until some experience of the ministry has been gained. It will be the aim of the present series to offer the sort of help which is dictated by such experience, and its develop ments will be largely guided by the suggestions, past and future, of the Clergy themselves. To provide d104books for Dogmatic Treatises is not contemplated - at any rate not at the outset. On the other hand, the pastoral work of the missionary priests will be kept constantly in view, and the series will also deal with those historical and liturgical aspects of Catholic belief and practice which are every day being brought more into prominence. That the needs of English-speaking countries are, in these respects, exceptional, must be manifest to all. In point of treatment it seems desirable that the volumes should be popular rather than scholastic, but the Editors hope that by the selection of writers, fully competent in their special subjects, the information given may always be accurate and abreast of modern research. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystical Presence: A Vindication of the Reformed or Calvinistic Doctrine of the Holy Eucharist The following work has grown directly out of some controversy which has had place, during the past year, in the German Reformed Church, on the subject to which it relates. This stands related to it, however, only as an external occasion, and has not been permitted to come into view, in any way, in the work itself. It is not felt that any apology is needed for the publication. - This is found in the importance of its subject, which must be left of course to speak for itself. As the Eucharist forms the very heart of the whole Christian worship, so it is clear that the entire question of the Church, which all are compelled to acknowledge, the great life-problem of the age, centres ultimately in the sacramental question as its inmost heart and core. Our view of the Lord's Supper must ever condition and rule in the end our view of Christ's person and the conception we form of the Church. It must influence at the same time, very materially, our whole system of theology, as well as all our ideas of ecclesiastical history. Is it true that the modern Protestant Church in this country has, in large part at least, fallen away from the sacramental doctrine of the sixteenth century? All must at least allow, that there is some room for asking the question. If so, it is equally plain that it is a question which is entitled to a serious answer. For in the nature of the case, such a falling away, if it exist at all, must be connected with a still more general removal from the original platform of the Church. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eucharistical Adoration: With Considerations Suggested by a Late Pastoral Letter (1858) On the Doctrine of the Most Holy Eucharist Besides correcting a few oversights, - more, however, and less excusable than I could have wished, - those changes are mostly confined to that portion of the work which deals with the intention of the final revisers of the Prayer-book on which point, as far as I have gone hitherto, all additional researches have tended only to strengthen our case. I could not be without misgivings, when I found that some of those, whom I am bound on all accounts deeply to respect, thought the treatise incorrect in reasoning, and (what indeed I should most exceedingly deprecate) its conclusions, if not its general spirit, alien to those of the English Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Eucharist: The Sacrifice, the Sacrament, and the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ; Practice of Love of Jesus Christ; Novena to the Holy Ghost I Acknowledge to have drawn this little treatise on the Sacrifice of Jesus Christ from a work composedly a learned French author. His work is complete and somewhat diffuse. I have composed and have published this abridgment because of the profit that may be derived from it, not only by the priests who say Mass, but by the faithful who are present at it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine and Practice of the Eucharist: As Deduced From Scripture and the Ancient Liturgies IT is only the rough sketch of an argument which is here presented. As in a previous work, I have wished to challenge the legitimacy of certain views of the Eucharist which are allowed to usurp, and to themselves exclusively, the vener able designation of Catholic, though to the prejudice of a higher, more Scriptural doctrine which has also the witness of the great Catholic liturgies in its favour. It is, perhaps, desirable to state from the very outset that it is no lower purely negative and Protestant view which I seek to vindicate, but a higher Scriptural and liturgical View of which the ordinary Roman and so-called Catholic is the merest travesty. The importance of the subject would indeed call for a fuller treatment and discussion than what are given here. I may, therefore, just mention that I have previously made two separate attempts to deal with it more adequately on a larger scale, first in tracing historically the.
