Book The Doctrine of the Freedom of the Will in Fichte s Philosophy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Doctrine of the Freedom of the Will in Fichte s Philosophy Classic Reprint written by John Franklin Brown and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of the Freedom of the Will in Fichte's Philosophy This essay is a critical study of the doctrine of the freedom of the will, as found in Fichte's philosophy, and especially in his ethical treatises. In Part I. the attempt has been made to give a fair and just exposition of what Fichte really taught on the subject, and, in order that the exposition should be distorted as little as possible through misinterpretation, exact quotations have been given wherever it seemed practicable to do so. Part II. is devoted to a critical examination of the validity of the doctrine as it is presented by Fichte. Fichte's own works are the basis of the essay, and the references are to Johann Gottlieb Fichte's Sammtliche Werke, herausgegeben von J. H. Fichte. The name of the treatise quoted from, or referred to, has been stated in each case, in order that the significance of the quotation may be the better understood. I am under special obligation to President J. G. Schurman for his encouragement, inspiration, and criticism given in the direction of the work; and to Professor J. E. Creighton, under whose efficient leadership my serious study of Fichte's philosophy was first undertaken. Book The Freedom of the Will Vol 1 4

Download or read book The Freedom of the Will Vol 1 4 written by Jonathan Edwards and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Freedom of the Will is a work by Christian reformer, theologian, and author Jonathan Edwards which uses the text of Romans 9:16 as its basis. It was first published in 1754 and examines the nature and the status of humanity's will. The book takes the classic Calvinist viewpoint on total depravity of the will and the need of humanity for God's grace in salvation. Although written long before the modern introduction and debate over Open Theism, Edwards' work addresses many of the concerns that have been raised today over this view. Edwards responded that a person may freely choose whatever seems good, but that whatever it is that seems good is based on an inherent predisposition that has been foreordained by God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Freedom of the Will President Edwards wrote his celebrated Inquiry as the philosophical defence of the peculiar doc trines of Calvinism; in defence of Human Freedom this volume has been written. The principal arguments of President Edwards have been fol lowed; partly because they are extensively sup posed to be, if not unanswerable, at least as yet unanswered, and partly because he has raised the questions of chief interest and decisive importance to Theologians in their respective doctrinal systems. Book Fichte on Free Will and Predestination

Download or read book Fichte on Free Will and Predestination written by Kienhow Goh and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book explains Fichte's position on free will and predestination, including its rationale and significance. It argues that Fichte affirms both free will and predestination and explains how he purports to do so without contradiction. The book presents Fichte's position as a form of compatibilism that has not yet been explored in the literature. Due to early rationalist convictions, Fichte is as much concerned with reconciling freedom with a logical and a theological determinism as he is with a causal determinism. He sees in Kant's novel concept of a pure practical reason a new form of rationalism, one consisting of a system of moral rather than natural necessitating grounds. At the same time, he adopts a more radically libertarian stance on free will than Kant. Every member in a sequence of free actions is a "first and absolute member" and could be other than it is given the same antecedent natural events and natural laws. The interest of Fichte as a theorist of freedom lies in how he brings together freedom and predetermination in a way that challenges our assumption about their mutual exclusivity. The book provides an overview of Fichte's philosophical system-the so-called "Doctrine of Science"-from 1793-1800 with the aim of contextualizing his theory of free agency and destiny. In doing so, it sheds light on how consideration of these issues in turn shapes the system. Fichte on Free Will and Predestination will be of interest to scholars and advanced students working on Fichte's philosophy, the history of modern philosophy, German Idealism, and the history of the philosophical issue of free will"--

Book The Fundamental Principle of Fichte s Philosophy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fundamental Principle of Fichte s Philosophy Classic Reprint written by Ellen Bliss Talbot and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fundamental Principle of Fichte's Philosophy The purpose of this monograph is to make a careful study of Fichte's conception of the ultimate principle. In his various writings the principle appears under many different names. 'The Ego, ' 'the Idea of the Ego, ' 'the moral world-order, ' 'God, ' 'the Absolute, ' 'Being, ' 'the Light, ' are some of the phrases by which it is most commonly designated. It is not the main purpose of this study to examine tile much discussed question of the relation between the two periods of Fichte's philosophy. But the question is so intimately connected with the problem which I have undertaken that some discussion of it is inevitable. I have tried, however, to keep well within the limits of my theme, and instead of considering the relation between the two periods in all its aspects, have sought merely to determine how far the conception of the fundamental principle which we find in Fichte's later writings differs from that which appears in the earlier ones. The references to Fichte's writings are to the Sammtliche Werke (Berlin, 1845-1846, 8 vols.) and to the Nachgelassene Werke (Bonn, 1834-1835, 3 vols.). References to the Sammtliche Werke are indicated by the letters S. W.; to the Nachgelassene Werke, by the letters N. W. References to the Kritik der remen Vernunft arc indicated by the letters A (for the First Edition) and B (for the Second). All other references to Kant's writings are made to Hartenstein's second edition of the Sammtliche Werke (Leipzig, 1867-1868, 8 vols.) and are indicated by the letter H. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Freedom of the Will It is almost with a feeling of trepidation that I under take to speak upon a subject so difficult, and one of such fundamental importance both for philosophy and for theology, as that of human freedom. It is a subject on which widely different views have been held, while in its treatment there is considerable possibility of being mis understood. But the fact that it is difficult and that almost any discussion of it is liable to misinterpretation from one viewpoint or another, is no valid reason for passing it by, while its fundamental importance for the better understanding of so many other questions makes its consideration all the more necessary. Indeed, in the light of modern scientific thought the subject is a very timely one for our generation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fichte The account of Fichte's system in the latter part of this volmne has no pretensions to be regarded as more than an introduction to his philosophy. When it is re membered that F ichte's works appear in eleven substan tial volumes, and that many of them are elaborate and detailed expositions of special branches of philosophy in' general, it will be evident that a summary or compressed statement would have but small value, and that a short sketch must of necessity be introductory in character.
