Book excerpt: Winner of a first-place award for popular presentation of the faith and second-place in pastoral ministry, catechetical resource from the Catholic Media Association. Many Catholics don’t believe that Jesus is really present in the Eucharist. Rather, they see the bread and wine of Holy Communion as mere symbols of Christ’s body and blood. Is that disbelief just a misunderstanding or is it a blatant rejection of one of the central beliefs of the faith? In Real Presence, University of Notre Dame theologian Timothy P. O’Malley clears up the confusion and shows you how to learn to love God and neighbor through a deeper understanding of the doctrine of real presence. A 2019 study by the Pew Research Center found that almost seventy percent of Catholics don’t believe that Jesus is really present in the Eucharist. O’Malley offers a concise introduction to Catholic teaching on real presence and transubstantiation through a biblical, theological, and spiritual account of these doctrines from the early Church to today. He also explores how real presence enables us to see the vulnerability of human life and the dignity of all flesh and blood. O’Malley leads you to a deeper understanding and renewed faith in Catholic teaching about transubstantiation and real presence by helping you learn how the doctrine of real presence is rooted in divine revelation and how the Church’s teaching regarding transubstantiation is spiritually fruitful for the believer today; how to make your own the doctrine of real presence by worshipping Christ in the Eucharist and therefore making a real assent to real presence; how the Eucharist, although not the exclusive presence of Christ in the Church’s liturgy and mission, is crucial in growing our capacity for recognizing those other presences; and the important relationship between Eucharistic communion and adoration.

Book The Eucharist Mystery of Presence Sacrifice and Communion

Download or read book The Eucharist Mystery of Presence Sacrifice and Communion written by Lawrence Feingold and published by Emmaus Academic. This book was released on 2018-04-01 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eucharist: Mystery of Presence, Sacrifice, and Communion explores the three ends of the Sacrament of Sacraments: God’s true presence, His redemptive sacrifice, and spiritual nourishment through communion with Him. In this follow-up to his groundbreaking work, Faith Comes From What Is Heard, Lawrence Feingold constructs a biblical vision of the Eucharist from its prefigurement in the Old Testament to its fulfillment in the New and presents the Eucharistic theology of the Church Fathers, St. Thomas Aquinas, and magisterial teaching from centuries past through today. The Eucharist is a masterful text, both challenging and spiritually rich, that comprehensively examines the unspeakable mystery that is the Eucharist.

Download or read book The Eucharist in the West written by Edward J. Kilmartin and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2015-09-22 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the light of its own history, the Catholic theology of the Eucharist, as it is generally understood today, is revealed as a splinter tradition whose deficiencies call for fundamental reformulation. The valid aspects of that theology (for example, the recovery of the role of the Holy Spirit in the new Roman Eucharistic Prayers) must be identified and integrated with the faith and practice of the first theological millennium when the lex orandi was not so dominated by the lex credendi. In the third theological millennium, more attention to the content and structure of the classical Eucharistic Prayers of both East and West will result in a Catholic systematic theology of eucharistic sacrifice that is not only truer to its biblical and patristic foundations but also - of ecumenical import - closer to some of the theological insights of the Protestant Reformers. These highlights of The Eucharist in the West illustrate the great value of this posthumous work. Conceptually complete, but in only rough draft form at the time of Father Kilmartin's death, it has been edited and prepared for publication by Robert J. Daly, SJ Chapter one describes the characteristics of the eucharistic theology of the Western Latin Fathers. Chapter two identifies the more important orientations and developments of the Catholic tradition from early medieval Scholasticism up to the first part of the twelfth century. Chapter three singles out the special contribution of early Scholasticism to Latin eucharistic theology. Chapter four functions as a bridge from early Scholasticism to high Scholasticism by outlining the general approach to a synthetic theology of the Eucharist which was obtained at the beginning of the thirteenth century. Chapter five treats eucharistic theology from high Scholasticism to the Council of Trent. Chapter six summarizes the dogmatic teaching of the Council of Trent. This is followed in Chapter seven, by a treatment of salient features of post-Tridentine Eucharistic theology. Chapter eight includes an analysis of the practice and theology of Mass stipends. Chapter nine includes a detailed analysis of Aquinas's theology of the eucharistic sacrifice. Chapter ten offers an account of some recent contributions to the formulation of a theology of the eucharistic sacrifice which have contributed to the modern average Roman Catholic synthesis. Robert J. Daly, SJ, is a professor of theology at Boston College and former editor of Theological Studies. Edward J. Kilmartin, SJ (1923-1994), professor for liturgical theology at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome, taught theology first at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology and later at Boston College. He served as director of the doctoral program in liturgical studies at the University of Notre Dame.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine and Practice of the Eucharist: As Deduced From Scripture and the Ancient Liturgies IT is only the rough sketch of an argument which is here presented. As in a previous work, I have wished to challenge the legitimacy of certain views of the Eucharist which are allowed to usurp, and to themselves exclusively, the vener able designation of Catholic, though to the prejudice of a higher, more Scriptural doctrine which has also the witness of the great Catholic liturgies in its favour. It is, perhaps, desirable to state from the very outset that it is no lower purely negative and Protestant view which I seek to vindicate, but a higher Scriptural and liturgical View of which the ordinary Roman and so-called Catholic is the merest travesty. The importance of the subject would indeed call for a fuller treatment and discussion than what are given here. I may, therefore, just mention that I have previously made two separate attempts to deal with it more adequately on a larger scale, first in tracing historically the. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eucharist: Our sacrament of unity--that we never stop discussing and debating. Nor should we! Nathan Mitchells earlier book Cult and Controversy demonstrated the breadth of his scholarship on the history of Eucharistic practice and piety in the Church. In this expanded edition of Real Presence, Dr. Mitchell brings that scholarship to bear on the contemporary dialogue about the Eucharist. What he says is vital to Sunday practice and parish life. Teachers, preachers, catechists, and students especially will find help in Mitchells insights into the Catechism of the Catholic Church and its teachings on the Eucharist; into the ways that contemporary biblical scholarship opens up our understanding of Jesus and the Eucharist; into those two wonderful words that have again and again challenged the Church to go ever deeper--real presence; and into the theologies of the Eucharist coming from contemporary Europeans such as Jean-Luc Marion, Herbert McCabe, and Catherine Pickstock. This new and expanded edition also includes Nathan Mitchells essay 'Eucharist in the Work of Some Contemporary European Theologians' and an expanded commentary on Eucharist in Luke's Gospel.Nathan Mitchell holds a doctorate in liturgical studies from the University of Notre Dame and is associate director for research at the Notre Dame Center for Pastoral Liturgy.
