Book excerpt: »As the impressive stories in this book illustrate, the experiences of the RED NOSES clowndoctors are as diverse as life itself: from cheerful and happy to moving and touching! The stories are all based on true situations. Look forward to stories full of little miracles.« Clowndoctors from Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland and many other countries describe moving encounters with patients, young and old: Évi, who dances her heart out with the clowns even though she can hardly stand on her own two feet; Álmos, an autistic boy who suddenly starts to speak when the clowns are there; Annie, who turns the tables and makes the clowndoctors laugh; or Melisa, a patient with cancer for whom the doctors had no more hope, but who nonetheless overcomes the crisis after the clowndoctor's visit. This book perfectly illustrates the power of laughter and humour, and the ability of the artists to create moments of happiness and joy in every situation, even when things seem lost.

Download or read book Medical Miracles written by Jacalyn Duffin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern culture tends to separate medicine and miracles, but their histories are closely intertwined. The Roman Catholic Church recognizes saints through canonization based on evidence that they worked miracles, as signs of their proximity to God. Physicianhistorian Jacalyn Duffin has examined Vatican sources on 1400 miracles from six continents and spanning four centuries. Overwhelmingly the miracles cited in canonizations between 1588 and 1999 are healings, and the majority entail medical care and physician testimony. These remarkable records contain intimate stories of illness, prayer, and treatment, as told by people who rarely leave traces: peasants and illiterates, men and women, old and young. A woman's breast tumor melts away; a man's wounds knit; a lame girl suddenly walks; a dead baby revives. Suspicious of wishful thinking or na ve enthusiasm, skeptical clergy shaped the inquiries to identify recoveries that remain unexplained by the best doctors of the era. The tales of healing are supplemented with substantial testimony from these physicians. Some elements of the miracles change through time. Duffin shows that doctors increase in number; new technologies are embraced quickly; diagnoses shift with altered capabilities. But other aspects of the miracles are stable. The narratives follow a dramatic structure, shaped by the formal questions asked of each witness and by perennial reactions to illness and healing. In this history, medicine and religion emerge as parallel endeavors aimed at deriving meaningful signs from particular instances of human distress -- signs to explain, alleviate, and console in confrontation with suffering and mortality. A lively, sweeping analysis of a fascinating set of records, this book also poses an exciting methodological challenge to historians: miracle stories are a vital source not only on the thoughts and feelings of ordinary people, but also on medical science and its practitioners.

In 1974, Carol realized the toll her husband’s excessive drinking had taken on their ten-year marriage. It took a lawyer flipping through an open file and reciting a litany of lawsuits, broken contracts, deals gone sour, and mounting debt for her to accept the truth. Without the benefit of the internet, marketable skills, or even friends who worked outside the home, Carol was determined to find a job. When her thirteen-year old son, Scotty, was diagnosed with a deadly cancer, she found herself balancing the challenges of a budding career, a contentious divorce, bankruptcy, and the demands of raising four active children. Her son’s death drew a line through her soul, but she eventually saw that it is the countless little miracles, woven seamlessly through our lives, that ultimately turn paths of hardship and loss into rivers of hope and survival.

Book excerpt: Underneath a picture of parents and baby should appear the following: "After Kennedy died and we had the photos done and footprints etc we were given some more time alone with him, which was when we said our final goodbye. I held him in my arms and kissed his forehead and told him that he didn't have to be scared because Moeke would look after him and that I was so proud to be able to call him my son. I thanked him for the time he gave us and I said "sweet dreams my little angel . goodbye" Brent took him from me and took him to the nurses station and they took him away. That was the last time I saw my baby boy. I still tell him every night before I go to bed how proud I am of him, how much I love him and I say to him "sweet dreams my little angel good night". These are the things that I specifically remember word for word and that I am willing to share with the world . My other memories are mine and I have to keep part of him to myself. I hope you understand." Jennifer Scott "We bury our children in the fields and then we reap the harvest." Sylvia Brown, world famous psychic medium

Book TOMORROW WE LL KNOW

Download or read book TOMORROW WE LL KNOW written by Beverly M. Newman and published by Author House. This book was released on 2005-09-19 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My husband, Ralph P. Newman, died of transfusion AIDS on May 14, 1985. In time, this simple statement of fact will become familiar – only the name, date and gender will be changed. It is a cruel irony that Ralph’s obsessive search of life’s purpose culminated in 1980 at the pinnacle of his career – five months before heart surgery and the infusion of AIDS contaminated blood. The question of purpose has been the driving force behind the writing of this book. As you read, you will be motivated to seek more information and as a result learn how, not what, to think about AIDS. As you walk with Ralph through his darkest days you will feel an identity with him. He too had hopes and dreams, was inspired by the beauty of nature, loved his family and the Star Spangled Banner brought a mist to his eyes. In many ways he was a lot like you.

Book Public Health Profiteering

Download or read book Public Health Profiteering written by Thomas DiLorenzo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diet industry feeds on the hopes and the fears of those who need-or think that they need-to lose weight. Since the publication of the first known diet book in 1864, a host of sanctimonious preachers and self-proclaimed experts-often overweight themselves-have stoked fears of obesity effectively for both profit and political power, none more so than former surgeon general C. Everett Koop. In Public Health Profiteering, James T. Bennett and Thomas J. DiLorenzo offer a scathing and irreverent assessment of Koop's public and private career showing how a brilliant pediatric surgeon has evolved into a self-seeking and hypocritical public scold.During his term as Surgeon General under the Bush administration, Koop, enamored of the military trappings of title and uniform, saw himself as leading an army of public health administrators against an enemy. As often as not, the enemy took on the disquieting countenance of the American people. In Koop's view they were stupid, improvident, feckless, unable to make the simplest decisions about their lives. As Bennett and DiLorenzo show, he used his position as a bully pulpit for intemperate attacks on the tobacco and alcohol industries and to irresponsibly exaggerate the dangers of obesity. While taking a prohibitionist line, Koop himself smoked a pipe, drank martinis, and weighed in at a hefty 210 pounds. Although Koop claimed that he would never cash in on his office, his subsequent career tells a far different story. He has lobbied, hawked, and endorsed products for a host of firms: Wyeth Ayerst (makers of the dubious diet drug Fen-Phen), Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Intel, Neurocrine, Kelloggs, BioPure, and many others.Lively in style and carefully researched, Public Health Profiteering will be of interest to health policy specialists, political scientists, economists, and media analysts.James T. Bennett is professor of economics at George Mason University. He is founder and editor of the Journal of Labor Research and has authored many books and articles, including Health Research Charities: Image and Reality and Official Lies: How Washington Misleads Us, co-authored with Thomas DiLorenzo.Thomas DiLorenzo is professor of economics at the Sellinger School of Business and Management at Loyola College in Baltimore. He has co-authored many books and is widely published in academic journals as well as the popular press, including the Wall Street Journal and USA Today.
