  • Pages : 326 pages

Download or read book The Docks written by Bill Sharpsteen and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2011-01-05 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Docks is an eye-opening journey into a giant madhouse of activity that few outsiders ever see: the Port of Los Angeles. In a book woven throughout with riveting novelist detail and illustrated with photographs that capture the frenetic energy of the place, Bill Sharpsteen tells the story of the people who have made this port, the largest in the country, one of the nation’s most vital economic enterprises. Among others, we meet a pilot who parks ships, one of the first women longshoremen, union officials and employers at odds over almost everything, an environmental activist fighting air pollution in the "diesel death zone," and those with the nearly impossible job of enforcing security. Together these stories paint a compelling picture of a critical entryway for goods coming into the country—the Port of Los Angeles is part of a complex that brings in 40% of all our waterborne cargo and 70% of all Asian imports—yet one that is also extremely vulnerable. The Docks is a rare look at a world within our world in which we find a microcosm of the labor, environmental, and security issues we collectively face.

Book Down at the Docks

Download or read book Down at the Docks written by Rory Nugent and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2010-02-09 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the opening pages of Moby Dick, Herman Melville called New Bedford, Massachusetts, “the dearest place to live in, in all of New England.” But the old fishing port and manufacturing center—once one of the richest cities in New England—has withered in the modern economy. Its once-prosperous fishermen now struggle with government regulations and fished-out seas, while its empty factories now offer more work to the Fire Department than anyone else. In Down at the Docks, Rory Nugent tells the “riches to rags” story of this iconic American town through beautifully told and unsentimental portraits of its residents. Their lives inform a eulogy to the distinctive ideas, traditions, and culture that is about to disappear from the waterfront.

Book Sittin on The Dock of the Bay

Download or read book Sittin on The Dock of the Bay written by Otis Redding and published by Akashic Books. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Otis Redding and Steve Cropper's timeless ode to never-ending days is given fresh new life in this heartwarming picture book. Sittin' in the mornin' sun I'll be sittin' when the evening comes Watching the ships roll in Then I'll watch 'em roll away again, yeah (Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay is a charming picture book set to one of the King of Soul'sTM greatest hits. The song was one of the last Redding recorded, and ranked number four on Billboard's year-end Hot 100 chart, going on to win two GRAMMYs and be certified triple-platinum. With lyrics by Otis Redding and Steve Cropper and illustrations by Kaitlyn Shea O'Connor, this picture book imagines a lonesome cat fishing off a dock and hoping the fish will bite soon. (Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay is the perfect picture book for parents wanting to share a classic song with their children, allowing both to find joy in it along the way. "What [Otis Redding's] voice conveyed to listeners was an immediate, almost unparalleled connection; he could wring inconceivable intensity and complexity out of a minimal phrase and returned, most often, to the basic, raw power of love." --New York Times The Otis Redding Foundation: Redding was dedicated to improving the quality of life for his community through the education and empowerment of its youth. He provided scholarships and summer music programs which continued until his untimely death on December 10, 1967. Today, the mission of the Otis Redding Foundation, established in 2007 by Mrs. Zelma Redding, is to empower, enrich, and motivate all young people through programs involving music, writing, and instrumentation. Book Death of the Docks

Download or read book Death of the Docks written by Colin Ross and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will enlighten you as to the real hardships faced by the people in the East End after the war and how many people had to resort to illegal means in order to survive. It will explain how bad the working conditions were in the docks and why there were strikes in an attempt to rectify the chronic working conditions. But intermingled among all the hardship are stories of humour and astonishment, this is what kept us going. The book follows my working career and how I helped to create the unofficial shop stewards movement into an industrial power base that the system could not control. With the stories centre piece being the jailing of 5 London dockworkers and how we overcame everything and got them released. Read how after one off the greatest trade union victories it became the tool that ultimately defeated us. This book really questions those people who claimed to have dockworkers interest at heart, could people keep on making mistakes and continually defend the system that eventually smashed a fine industry. Also the M Ps and local councillors who stood by silently.

For now, I must stay focused on the dismembered body someone left in a trunk outside of my office. With a note attached. Quinn is next. It just got too deep. Instincts, don't fail me. I need to find out who did this before it's too late.

Find out how a series of last-minute negotiations between the IDA and Google convinced Sergey Brin and Larry Page to locate their European headquarters in Ireland instead of Switzerland. Discover the difficulty Facebook faced when it tried to register its company name in Ireland, as another firm had a similar name. Learn how a tweet to Twitter co-founder Biz Stone helped woo the social media platform. Book Mira Lloyd Dock and the Progressive Era Conservation Movement

Download or read book Mira Lloyd Dock and the Progressive Era Conservation Movement written by Susan Rimby and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For her time, Mira Lloyd Dock was an exceptional woman: a university-trained botanist, lecturer, women’s club leader, activist in the City Beautiful movement, and public official—the first woman to be appointed to Pennsylvania’s state government. In her twelve years on the Pennsylvania Forest Commission, she allied with the likes of J. T. Rothrock, Gifford Pinchot, and Dietrich Brandis to help bring about a new era in American forestry. She was also an integral force in founding and fostering the Pennsylvania State Forest Academy in Mont Alto, which produced generations of Pennsylvania foresters before becoming Penn State's Mont Alto campus. Though much has been written about her male counterparts, Mira Lloyd Dock and the Progressive Era Conservation Movement is the first book dedicated to Mira Lloyd Dock and her work. Susan Rimby weaves these layers of Dock’s story together with the greater historical context of the era to create a vivid and accessible picture of Progressive Era conservation in the eastern United States and Dock’s important role and legacy in that movement.
