Book The Stranger the Tears the Photograph the Touch

Download or read book The Stranger the Tears the Photograph the Touch written by William A. Christian Jr. and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-10 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an expanded, larger-format, and more highly illustrated version of a smaller book released by CEU Press in 2011. It presents and comments on an extensive set of religious and personal photographs and illustrations that depict people along with divine beings or absent loved ones. First, Christian examines the periodic appearances of Christ-like strangers in the Spanish countryside through the vision of a woman in La Mancha in 1931. Then he considers the long history of images with liquids on them not only for early modern Spain, but also in the United States, Italy and France in the 1940s and 1950s. The third and most extensive chapter addresses the iconography of illustrated depictions of divine and spirit beings in conjunction with humans and how its conventions were incorporated into commercial postcards and personal photographs, culminating in photo montages of families and their absent soldiers in World War I. The fourth theme is new to this edition. It compares the electric moments in Spanish communities when people ritually come into physical contact with saints and with animals, or transform themselves into saints or animals for ritual purposes. Over 50 of the color photographs by Spain's preeminent documentary photographer, Cristina García Rodero, are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hands are indeed remarkable tools. They are used for repairing cars, saving lives, and even that most simple but profound of functions: making others feel loved and cared for. For centuries, hands have been revered as vessels for imparting blessing, spiritual gifts, the Holy Spirit, and healing- through touching one another. Traditionally known as the laying on of hands, this Christian practice has been given by God for laypeople and clergymen alike to gain insight, heal the sick, receive spiritual gifts, and bless others on their journeys. One of the most beautiful and intimate things we can do is be active participants and partners with God by using touch to impart healing and blessings to the sick, oppressed, and those who hunger for more. When we use our God-given hands in conjunction with prayer to touch others, we are accomplishing God's will here on earth. The Power of Touch not only explores the history and substantiation of the efficacy and importance of hands throughout time, but taps into readers' very souls as it illustrates the power that to help and heal our fellow man-and, in turn, ourselves, through the power of God that flows through us.

Book The King s Touch

  • Publisher : Graywolf Press
  • Release : 2022-02-01
  • ISBN : 1644451670
  • Pages : 135 pages

Download or read book The King s Touch written by Tom Sleigh and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A profound encounter with the hyperreality of our time of global upheaval, violence, and pandemic. Tom Sleigh’s poems are skeptical of the inevitability of our fate, but in this brilliant new collection, they are charged with a powerful sense of premonition, as if the future is unfolding before us, demanding something greater than the self. Justice is a prevailing force, even while the poems are fully cognizant of the refugee crisis, war, famine, and the brutal reality of a crowded hospital morgue. The King’s Touch collides the world of fact and the world of mystery with a resolutely secular register. The title poem refers to the once-held belief that the king, as a divine representative, is imbued with the power of healing touch. Sleigh turns this encounter between illness and human contact toward his own chronic blood disease and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and its mounting death tolls. One poem asks, “isn’t it true that no matter how long you / wear them, masks don’t grieve, only faces do?” In this essential new work, Sleigh shows how the language of poetry itself can revive and recuperate a sense of a future under the conditions of violence, social unrest, and global anxiety about the fate of the planet.

Book excerpt: Originating in the early twentieth century, the Divine Mercy devotion of St. Faustina Kowalska is one of the most celebrated of all Catholic devotions. In this, their first book, Catholic bloggers and speakers Michele Faehnle and Emily Jaminet break open the history, practices, and prayers associated with the devotion, guiding busy moms to receive God’s message of Divine Mercy and pass it on to others through their words, deeds, and prayers. In her famous Diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul, St. Faustina Kowalska recorded a series of visions of Jesus where he revealed the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and promised that anything can be obtained with the prayer if it is compatible with his will. St. John Paul II formally established the Divine Mercy devotion and canonized Faustina in 2000. The Marians of the Immaculate Conception are dedicated to spreading the Divine Mercy devotion the foreword for this book was written by Fr. Michael E. Gaitley, MIC, author of Divine Mercy Explained and 33 Days to Morning Glory. In Divine Mercy for Moms, Michele Faehnle and Emily Jaminet of the Columbus Catholic Women’s Conference—one of the largest annual Catholic women’s conferences in the country—draw upon their own experiences to introduce you to St. Faustina and her five essential elements of the Divine Mercy message: The image of the Merciful Jesus The Feast of Divine Mercy The Chaplet of Divine Mercy The House of Mercy Spreading the honor of Divine Mercy With heartwarming stories and practical advice, this book reveals that mercy is not just a gift to be received in the confessional but a spiritual resource that strengthens those who extend themselves in word, deed, and prayer. Book excerpt: 'But Faustus' offenses can never be pardoned: the serpent that tempted Eve may be sav'd but not Faustus'. Christopher Marlowe knew this only too well when he penned his famous play in the days when Elizabeth I was on the throne. His deal with the Dark Man to extend his life has had him wandering, rootless for centuries and has driven him away from normal society. As the millenium turned he was living in exile on an island in Maine in a fortress where the Dark Man's descendents couldn't find him. Enter Edy Chenowth, a woman with a mission. Her grandfather has recently passed away and as a last gesture she wants to make the final issue of his magazine, Guilt-Edged Murder, the best it can be. To finish the story about the death of Christopher Marlowe, she needs to interview the reclusive Marlowe scholar who lives in seclusion in Maine. Nicholas Marley has not made her trip easy, but Edy is determined to find the answers her grandfather sought so she can print the memorial issue of GEM. But on the island she finds that things are not what they seem and it gradually dawns on her that her host is far more odd and special than she had ever imagined. Giving in to the attraction that has made the separation of centuries mean nothing, their tryst is interrupted by the Dark Man's minions who are determined that this time, Christopher Marlowe will truly die.
