Book The Divine Primacy of the Bishop of Rome and Modern Eastern Orthodoxy

Download or read book The Divine Primacy of the Bishop of Rome and Modern Eastern Orthodoxy written by James Likoudis and published by Emmaus Road Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-28 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite real progress in ecumenical relations between Catholics and Eastern Orthodox, the last several years have seen an increase in bitter attacks on papal supremacy and infallibility. In this newly revised and expanded work, James Likoudis treats in detail Eastern Orthodox ecclesiology and replies to objections made to critical elements of Roman Catholic doctrine on: The pope’s primacy of supremacy and infallibility, The procession of the Holy Spirit, The filioque clause, The dogma of the Immaculate Conception, Purgatory, and The development of doctrine. With The Divine Primacy of the Bishop of Rome & Modern Eastern Orthodoxy, Likoudis contributes to today’s Catholic–Orthodox dialog by going back to the “undivided Church of the First Millennium,” where we see clearly the existence of a papal primacy of universal jurisdiction.

Book excerpt: In "The Divine Mosaic: Piecing Together Catholic and Orthodox Union," renowned ecumenical authority James Likoudis embarks on a meticulous exploration of the long-standing divide between Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy. Drawing from his unique vantage point as an Eastern Orthodox convert, Likoudis provides profound insights on contentious issues such as the Filioque, Papal Primacy, and Palamism. Through a masterful deconstruction of misconceptions, Likoudis advocates for reconciliation and a deeper mutual understanding, challenging both the Catholic and Orthodox realms to unite in faith. This seminal work stands as a testament to Likoudis's seven-decade-long commitment to fostering Christian unity.Within these pages, he refutes common objections to Catholicism as well as providing a sound basis for a truly Catholic ecclesiology. This book will be a welcome contribution to ecumenism today and will bring the Church of Christ, which subsists fully within the Catholic Church, that much closer to healing its wounds, and offering a vision of a united Christianity to the world; a prerequisite of fulfilling the mission entrusted to it by Christ.

Book Orthodoxy and the Roman Papacy

Download or read book Orthodoxy and the Roman Papacy written by Adam A. J. DeVille and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the issues that continue to divide the Catholic Church from the Orthodox Church—the two largest Christian bodies in the world, together comprising well over a billion faithful—the question of the papacy is widely acknowledged to be the most significant stumbling block to their unification. For nearly forty years, commentators, theologians, and hierarchs, from popes and patriarchs to ordinary believers of both churches, have acknowledged the problems posed by the papacy. In Orthodoxy and the Roman Papacy: Ut Unum Sint and the Prospects of East-West Unity, Adam A. J. DeVille offers the first comprehensive examination of the papacy from an Orthodox perspective that also seeks to find a way beyond this impasse, toward full Orthodox-Catholic unity. He first surveys the major postwar Orthodox and Catholic theological perspectives on the Roman papacy and on patriarchates, enumerating Orthodox problems with the papacy and reviewing how Orthodox patriarchates function and are structured. In response to Pope John Paul II’s 1995 request for a dialogue on Christian unity, set forth in the encyclical letter Ut Unum Sint, DeVille proposes a new model for the exercise of papal primacy. DeVille suggests the establishment of a permanent ecumenical synod consisting of all the patriarchal heads of Churches under a papal presidency, and discusses how the pope qua pope would function in a reunited Church of both East and West, in full communion. His analysis, involving the most detailed plan for Orthodox-Catholic unity yet offered by an Orthodox theologian, could not be more timely.

Download or read book You are Peter written by Olivier Clement and published by New City Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papacy is clearly the greatest difficulty facing ecumenical dialogue today, and particularly the dialogue between Catholicism and Orthodoxy. Yet there is a doorway of hope. In his encyclical, Ut unum sint, John Paul II expressed a desire for common reflection on the exercise of papal primacy. In You Are Peter the great Orthodox theologian Olivier Clement brilliantly responds to this request. He emphasizes the history and experience of the undivided Church, before recalling the contrasting developments of eastern and western Christianity and concluding with the tasks that call us to unity. Professor Clements response to John Paul II [is] solidly rooted in the Orthodox tradition, [and] represents the cordial and open mentality characteristic of the theologians of Saint Sergius. I would judge that it is almost exactly the kind of response for which Pope John Paul II was hoping. It is a pleasure to be able to present to English-speaking readers this concise, learned, and articulate presentation.... Professor Clements contribution ... is a sign of the progress [in ecumenism] thus far made and a beacon of hope for the future. From the Foreword by Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J. Laurence J. McGinley Professor Fordham University, New York

Book Popes and Patriarchs

Download or read book Popes and Patriarchs written by Michael Whelton and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For any dialogue between the Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches to be fruitful, we must first understand our differences. Popes and Patriarchs covers some of the distinctives in theology and worldview that separate the churches of the East from those of the West, focusing primarily on the claims of papal supremacy. Author Michael Whelton, a convert from Catholicism to Orthodoxy, discusses some of the theological and historical issues that led him to explore the teachings of the Orthodox Church, including the doctrine of original sin, the influence of Medieval scholastic thought on the Western Church, and the modern trend toward evolutionary Christianity. Part II examines in depth the true attitude of the early Eastern saints of the Church toward the papacy, an attitude radically different from that frequently attributed to them by Roman Catholic apologists.A final chapter is devoted to typical questions Roman Catholics raise about the Orthodox Church, including a comprehensive discussion of divorce and remarriage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catholics always believe that there is a close association between the mystery of Christ in the Holy Eucharist and the mystery of Mary. This “sense of faith” is given theological and doctrinal exposition in this exciting new volume of Mary at the Foot of the Cross - VI: Marian Coredemption in the Eucharistic Mystery. Originally presented as Acts of the Marian symposium in England in the year of the Eucharist 2005, this precious collection of articles presents profound insights on the relationship between Marian Coredemption and Eucharistic mystery. Articles such as the late John Paul II’s teachings on Mary’s Presence in the Mass, Mary and the Eucharist in John of the Cross, St. Louis Grignion de Montfort, St. Veronica Giuliani, are only some of the most inspiring thought on the subject matter compiled in one decent volume. Ideal for scholarly research written by theologians and scholars, this volume is also accessible to non-professional readers as well. A must reading on the central truth of our Catholic faith: Mary and the Holy Eucharist.
