Book excerpt: A never-before published tale by the author of the best-selling Hittite Warrior, carries the reader back to Ancient Egypt and biblical Jerusalem. It is 701 B.C-rule of the Kushite dynasty in ancient Egypt. Young Prince Taharka, a very minor royal son, succeeds unexpectedly to the throne of Kush and Egypt-a divine rulership. It's not long, however, before a treacherous plot pushes him into sudden exile and into the hands of Amos, an emissary of King Hezekiah seeking help against the Assyrians. Posing as a medical assistant, Taharka journeys with Amos to Judea where he encounters two kings in conflict. His true identity suddenly uncovered, he must choose with whom he will fight-the mighty Assyrian, Sennacherib, promising alliance or Hezekiah, the Jew who trusts in Yahweh. A novel inspired by research on the historical King Taharka and his period.

Book excerpt: If the ancient kingdom of Sumer was the due of the serpent or bull hero who defeated the old serpent or bull and had access to the Divine Mother we can understand why her love appears to be a dangerous boon in later ages. For year by year the chosen of Ishtar has to encounter a foe of his own blood and one of the two "bulls" is dispatched to the country without return. -from "The Divine King" Thoroughly fascinating and totally engrossing, this 1930 work is an exploration of myth and magic in ancient cultures and how they tapped into the most elemental of human experiences-sex, death, tribalism, and war-to lay the foundations of modern religion, contemporary politics, and even the tradition of scientific inquiry. Armchair anthropologists, readers of comparative mythology, and anyone interested in the fundamental basis of the human subconscious will find this book extraordinarily enlightening. Hungarian anthropologist GZA RHEIM (1891-1953) was the first professor of anthropology at the University of Budapest, a position he held from 1919 to 1938, when he fled to the United States to escape the unrest of Europe just prior to World War II. He is also the author of The Riddle of the Sphinx (1934), The Origin and Function of Culture (1943), The Eternal Ones of the Dream (1945), and The Gates of the Dream (1952).

Book Religion and Power

Download or read book Religion and Power written by Nicole Maria Brisch and published by Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures. This book was released on 2008 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a collection of contributions presented during the Third Annual University of Chicago Oriental Institute Seminar Religion and Power: Divine Kingship in the Ancient World and Beyond, held at the Oriental Institute, February 23-24, 2007. The purpose of this conference was to examine more closely concepts of kingship in various regions of the world and in different time periods. The study of kingship goes back to the roots of fields such as anthropology and religious studies, as well as Assyriology and Near Eastern archaeology. More recently, several conferences have been held on kingship, drawing on cross-cultural comparisons. Yet the question of the divinity of the king as god has never before been examined within the framework of a cross-cultural and multi-disciplinary conference. Some of the recent anthropological literature on kingship relegates this question of kings who deified themselves to the background or voices serious misgivings about the usefulness of the distinction between divine and sacred kings. Several contributors to this volume have pointed out the Western, Judeo-Christian background of our categories of the human and the divine. However, rather than abandoning the term divine kingship because of its loaded history it is more productive to examine the concept of divine kingship more closely from a new perspective in order to modify our understanding of this term and the phenomena associated with it.

Download or read book The Divine Role of Kings written by Susan Andersen and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-29 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divine masters concern themselves with world history, for the condition of planet earth is of extreme importance to the cosmic administration of the universe. Earth is the planet for human evolution. It is where the mystery schools trained humans to join divine life through regular ascensions of consciousness. All this has been threatened in the last few centuries due to the introduction of human science and government, rather than divine science and government, as the main organizing force of civilization. In this regard, there is a secret teaching about the divine role of kings that is explored in this book.Earth has been the place where the fortunate meet divine masters to take a spiritual path. The Universal Logos himself regulates the spiritual schools of earth in his role as the Christ Master. He comes regularly, usually in a role not known or understood, or in some private life. The Christ is a Logos of great power, and yet he often humbly tastes the life of the common people in various ways so he knows how to heal and evolve the human race. He is quietly on earth at the present time to take care of the great evil trying to engulf us, to take care of the threat of nuclear war. Christ is known for his many functions: as a creator, a destroyer warrior, as a judge, as a teacher, as a healer, and as a king. This book celebrates Christ the King because it is a special role that brings protection to a person or a country in perilous times. This is such a time. Though we call ourselves a democracy, we need a king now, not Donald Trump, but a divine king. And the following essay, laid out in short sections, says why.

Book King and Messiah as Son of God

Download or read book King and Messiah as Son of God written by Adela Yarbro Collins and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2008-11-03 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the history of the idea that the king and later the messiah is Son of God, from its origins in ancient Near Eastern royal ideology to its Christian appropriation in the New Testament. Both highly regarded scholars, Adela Yarbro Collins and John J. Collins argue that Jesus was called “the Son of God” precisely because he was believed to be the messianic king. This belief and tradition, they contend, led to the identification of Jesus as preexistent, personified Wisdom, or a heavenly being in the New Testament canon. However, the titles Jesus is given are historical titles tracing back to Egyptian New Kingdom ideology. Therefore the title “Son of God” is likely solely messianic and not literal. King and Messiah as Son of God is distinctive in its range, spanning both Testaments and informed by ancient Near Eastern literature and Jewish noncanonical literature.
