Book Divine Epiphany in Greek Literature and Culture

Download or read book Divine Epiphany in Greek Literature and Culture written by Georgia Petridou and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In ancient Greece, epiphanies were embedded in cultural production, and employed by the socio-political elite in both perpetuating pre-existing power-structures and constructing new ones. This volume is the first comprehensive survey of the history of divine epiphany as presented in the literary and epigraphic narratives of the Greek-speaking world. It demonstrates that divine epiphanies not only reveal what the Greeks thought about their gods; they tell us just as much about the preoccupations, the preconceptions, and the assumptions of ancient Greek religion and culture. In doing so, it explores the deities who were prone to epiphany and the contexts in which they manifested themselves, as well as the functions (narratives and situational) they served, addressing the cultural specificity of divine morphology and mortal-immortal interaction. Divine Epiphany in Greek Literature and Culture re-establishes epiphany as a crucial mode in Greek religious thought and practice, underlines its centrality in Greek cultural production, and foregrounds its impact on both the political and the societal organization of the ancient Greeks.

Book Epiphanies of the Divine in the Septuagint and the New Testament

Download or read book Epiphanies of the Divine in the Septuagint and the New Testament written by Roland Deines and published by . This book was released on 2019-12 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the latest contribution to the international Corpus Judaeo-Hellenisticum Novi Testamenti (CJH), investigates New Testament and Septuagint descriptions of theophanic interactions with the world. The CJH project aims to improve the understanding of the individual New Testament writings as part of the culture of Hellenistic Judaism. This final volume complements studies on Philo, Josephus, non-textual evidence, and non-canonical pseudepigraphal writings, and focuses on the development of linguistic and theological concepts within and between the LXX and the New Testament. Thematically, the volume considers the possible impact of religious experiences on biblical texts: according to the biblical authors Israel experienced God as speaking and acting on its behalf, occasionally in visible, audible, and tangible ways. Indeed, scripture presents itself as beginning with epiphanies of the divine. Contributors: Andy Angel, Richard H. Each of us has traumas, triggers, and painful experiences that have shaped our existence in this world. We carry these burdens with us as we navigate the realities of our lives. Learning to embody the truth of imago Dei is our catalyst for healing. We are each made in the image of God, and the Spirit of God lives within us. Therefore, we are allowed to listen to our Spirit. We are invited to develop our own Divine intuition, and we are empowered to trust our inner voice. We don't need anyone else's permission to navigate our life and faith, except our own. With the powerful voice of a woman, pastor, mother, and advocate, Rev. Aurelia Dávila Pratt gives us the compassionate nudge and tools we need to access our inner authority. By stepping out of harmful belief systems informed by white supremacy and scarcity, we can step into healthy paradigms of abundance, liberation, and power. A Brown Girl's Epiphany is a love letter to all of us in need of guidance on our journey. Honest, vulnerable, and humble, Pratt imagines a world where the walking wounded become the fully healed and liberated, where our inner work becomes the starting point for creating heaven on earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third and final volume in a trilogy of prayer manuals compiled by Publishers Weekly religion editor Phyllis Tickle as a contemporary Book of Hours to guide Christians gently yet authoritatively through the daily offices. The Divine Hours is the first major literary and liturgical reworking of the sixth-century Benedictine Rule of fixed-hour prayer. This beautifully conceived and thoroughly modern three-volume guide will appeal to the theological novice as well as to the ecclesiastical sophisticate. Making primary use of the Book of Common Prayer and the writings of the Church Fathers, The Divine Hours is also a companion to the New Jerusalem Bible, from which it draws its Scripture readings. The trilogy blends prayer and praise in a way that, while extraordinarily fresh, respects and builds upon the ancient wisdom of Christianity. The third and final book in the set, Prayers for Springtime, provides prayers, psalms, and readings for this season associated with rebirth. Compact, it is perfect for those seeking greater spiritual depth. As a contemporary Book of Hours, The Divine Hours: Prayers for Springtime heralds a renewal of the tradition of disciplined daily prayer, and gives those already using the first two volumes the completion they are seeking. With this volume, the series culminates with three prayer manuals encompassing the liturgical and calendar year with the offices for every day.

Book Dhi s Oracle of Divine Epiphanies

Download or read book Dhi s Oracle of Divine Epiphanies written by Saudamini Mishra and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-05 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the book-While scrolling through posts on your social media, do you also stop at a random quote and feel like the universe sent it across just for you?Well, 'Dhi's Oracle of Divine Guidance' is supposed to be just that-a self-help collection of Dhi's (the Author's alter ego and the narrator of her works) musings and epiphanies covering all spheres of life and its range of conflicting emotions that are meant to be flipped through intuitively until you arrive at the one, you're meant to ponder over concerning the situation in your life at the time. The way to use it-With a relaxed frame of mind and your eyes closed, hold this self-help oracle in your hand gently and take a few deep breaths, focusing only on them and emptying your mind of all thoughts. Then proceed to request the universe to speak to you and guide you with what you need to do through this means. Be free and expressive as you do this, not thinking so much about how you're framing your words or how you ought to speak to the 'High Power'. Allow this to be a cathartic experience if you must. There is nothing wrong in being desperate for guidance as long as it's sincere and not done with a mind already made up.Flip through the pages with your eyes still closed and stop when your intuition asks you to-don't second guess it. The epiphany you'll thus arrive at, will be what the universe will want you to mull over in terms of where you're at in your life and will require you to introspect honestly, without trying to justify or vilify yourself before the universe. The universe has no ulterior motive in making you believe what isn't true, so denial won't support the divine guidance.Let Dhi assist you on your personal journey.

Book The Cult of Castor and Pollux in Ancient Rome

Download or read book The Cult of Castor and Pollux in Ancient Rome written by Amber Gartrell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dioscuri first appeared at the Battle of Lake Regillus in 496 BC to save the new Republic. Receiving a temple in the Forum in gratitude, the gods continued to play an important role in Roman life for centuries and took on new responsibilities as the needs of the society evolved. Protectors of elite horsemen, boxers and sailors, they also served as guarantors of the Republic's continuation and, eventually, as models for potential future emperors. Over the course of centuries, the cult and its temples underwent many changes. In this book, Amber Gartrell explores the evolution of the cult. Drawing on a range of methodological approaches and a wide range of ancient evidence, she focuses on four key aspects: the gods' two temples in Rome, their epiphanies, their protection of varied groups, and their role as divine parallels for imperial heirs, revealing how religion, politics and society interacted and influenced each other.

Book Passion Persecution and Epiphany in Early Jewish Literature

Download or read book Passion Persecution and Epiphany in Early Jewish Literature written by Nicholas Peter Legh Allen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-08 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines Jewish literature produced from c. 700 B.C.E. to c. 200 C.E. from a socio-theological perspective. In this context, it offers a scholarly attempt to understand how the ancient Jewish psyche dealt with times of extreme turmoil and how Jewish theology altered to meet the challenges experienced. The volume explores various early Jewish literature, including both the canonical and apocryphal scripture. Here, reference is often made to a divine epiphany (a moment of unexpected and prodigious revelation or insight) as a response to abuse, suffering and passion. Many of the chapters deal with these issues in relation to the Antiochan crisis of 169 to 164 B.C.E. in Judea, one of the more notable periods of oppression. This watershed event appears to have served as a catalyst for the new apocalyptic texts which were produced up until c. 200 C.E, and which reflect a new theological dynamic in Judaism – one that informed subsequent Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism. Passion, Persecution and Epiphany in Early Jewish Literature will be of interest to anyone working on the Bible (both Masoretic and LXX) and early Jewish literature, as well as students of Jewish history and the Levant in the classical period.
