Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Drama of History and Civilisation Mediterranean and Atlantic Missions: being transitional - partly Mediterranean and partly Oceanic - or civilisation escaping from the narrow limits of the Mediterranean world. This Era may be regarded as the Greater Dawn of the Coming Day. It is an analytical Era in which the defective unity of the preceding Era is broken up into national sectarian and alienated parts; and a great struggle is maintained between the conservatives of the old mediaeval, and the votaries of the new or the resuscitated and antemediaeval, principles, causing great repressive severity on the one hand and looseness and diversity of principle on the other. Away from the herd flies the wounded deer; away from the flock staggers the sickly sheep - to the solitary covert to die. The man too thinks it is to die; but it is in truth so to return to life. 'Leave me to my misery, ' cries the man, and lo, his misery is the wind of the waving garments of him that walks in the garden in the cool of the day! All misery is God unknown." Book The Religious Drama Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Religious Drama Classic Reprint written by Gordon Crosse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Drama The purpose of this book is to supply a short sketch of the story of the drama as an art of the Christian Church from its beginnings to the present day. Portions of this story, notably those which bear on the development of the secular drama, have formed the subject of many learned works. But there does not seem to be any one book which covers the whole ground. Though it is not to be supposed that so small a volume as the present can fill so large a deficiency, it can at any rate attempt to outline the history of the Christian drama as a connected whole, and, in so doing, to vindicate its claim to the designation of a religious art. Book The Drama of the Ages Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Drama of the Ages Classic Reprint written by Ella R. Shaeffer and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Drama of the Ages The Drama of the Ages embraces more than four thousand years of time. It brings to view the fact of one continued conflict throughout all the Ages. Two opposing forces have been in fierce combat. The subject of conquest has been the subjection of the human mind and the enslavement of both mind and body. In protest Omnipotent power has been ever present, sometimes in mighty demonstration. The conquest which has been waged throughout the centuries reveals two sets of principles which are absolute in opposition the one to the other. The following pages are for the most part authentic history, the Bible being the basis in which the course of despotic empire from its beginning is briefly set down, but it is at the greatest crises of the world's history that the clash of principles is in the most spectacular manner made manifest. This is not a history of dry facts and events so much as of human nature, of hearts and souls. And if it shall prove helpful to someone struggling for the way of true happiness and well being, then the object for which it is written shall have been attained. Book The Divine Drama

    Book Details:
  • Author : John C. Dancy
  • Publisher : James Clarke & Co.
  • Release : 2001
  • ISBN : 9780718829872
  • Pages : 804 pages

Download or read book The Divine Drama written by John C. Dancy and published by James Clarke & Co.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible, as is often said, is the world's least-read bestseller. That is particularly true of the Old Testament. People are often put off by the sheer bulk of the material and its frequently undistinguished quality. John Dancy has selected large samples from most of the canonical and apocryphal books, amounting to just under a third of the total, chosen for artistic merit and intrinsic interest rather than for representative status or theological value. Literature of this stature, he says, should not be restricted to academics and believers. To make it more approachable, the text is presented with commentary on the same page, in smaller type so that attention is never diverted from the original. The commentary mostly concentrates on literary matters but provides technical explanations where necessary. In addition a sensitive and sound introduction also puts the Hebrew writings in the historical context of the ancient Near East. Extracts are used from a variety of translations, preferring the most faithful in language, tone and style for each section. Accuracy is a prime concern, but so is poetry. Above all, the selections bring out the inherent dramatic qualities of the verse dialogues and narrative prose. Nothing quite like this has yet been made available. The Divine Drama will be a welcome addition to the library of any thoughtful reader who cares for good stories.
