Book excerpt: Religion has always been a fundamental force for constructing identity, from antiquity to the contemporary world. The transformation of ancient cults into faith systems, which we recognise now as major world religions, took place in the first millennium AD, in the period we call 'Late Antiquity'. Our argument is that the creative impetus for both the emergence, and much of the visual distinctiveness of the world religions came in contexts of cultural encounter. Bridging the traditional divide between classical, Asian, Islamic and Western history, this exhibition and its accompanying catalogue highlights religious and artistic creativity at points of contact and cultural borders between late antique civilisations. This catalogue features the creation of specific visual languages that belong to four major world religions: Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and Islam. The imagery still used by these belief systems today is evidence for the development of distinct religious identities in Late Antiquity. Emblematic visual forms like the figure of Buddha and Christ, or Islamic aniconism, only evolved in dialogue with a variety of coexisting visualisations of the sacred.0As late antique believers appropriated some competing models and rejected others, they created compelling and long-lived representations of faith, but also revealed their indebtedness to a multitude of contemporaneous religious ideas and images. 00Exhibition: Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, UK (19.10.2017-18.02.2018).

Sculpture, painting, music, architecture, literature, taken together, are an expression of the human spirit realizing itself and its surroundings in the language of beauty; morality is the attempt of the same spirit to discern and live in right relations to other human Spirits; religion, its endeavor to establish and sustain fellowship with the Divine Spirit; philosophy, its effort to discover that final generali zation which shall put that spirit in command of the order of the universe; and history, the record of the struggle of that spirit to achieve. Book The Harmony of Divine Truth Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Harmony of Divine Truth Classic Reprint written by Seth Williston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Harmony of Divine Truth How it can be accounted for, that the term truth should have been selected by the inspired writers, (or rather by the Spirit Of inspiration.) to distinguish the religion which they exhibit, from every other system in the world, if at the same time they had considered it as a mere moral chaos, made for our plastic hands to mould and shape into such creeds as should please every man's own fancy? It is worthy to be noted that the sacred volume makes a very copious* use of this term, applying it to every department Of religion. For itself, as an inspired book, it claims the honor Of being called the scripture of truth, and the word of truth. Dan. X. 21. Eph. I. 13. Is not the Bible thus manifestly distinguished from the Koran of the Mahometan's, and the Shasters Of the Brahmins, and from every other book which sets up a claim to inspiration? The God of the Bible is called the true God, his beloved Son is called the true Witness, and his Holy Spirit the Spirit of truth; and why, except to distinguish Jehovah from idols, his Son from false Christs, and the Holy Ghost from Satan, and every other lying spirit? The doctrines we are required to believe, are denominated the truth, to distinguish them from the doctrines of devils, and from delusive errors of every kind; and the belief of these doctrines, when it is wrought in our hearts by the Spirit Of God, is said to be truth and no lie, to distinguish it from a false faith which does not work by love. Also, that conduct which is required by the divine law, and which is the external expression of a heart conformed to it, is called obeying the truth. 1 Tim. Ii. 4. 1 John ii. 27. 2 John 4. The church of the living God, when considered as a community, composed Of men redeemed from iniquity, is called the pillar and ground Of the truth. 1 Tim. Iii. 15. See also Isa. Xxvi. 2. What an importance does it give to religious truth when we hear Christ Jesus witnessing this good confession before Pontius Pilate! TO this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. John xviii. 37. Surely that must be a thing Of no small consequence, the establishment of which was the end of our Redeemer's birth, and the sole cause why he came into the world. Book Ideal Metrology in Nature Art Religion and History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ideal Metrology in Nature Art Religion and History Classic Reprint written by Hermon Gaylord Wood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ideal Metrology in Nature, Art, Religion and History Ages long ago men reckoned the cycles of nature by numbers, and numbers became symbols of natural law and Of Spiritual ideals manifested in nature. Ancient students had a double grasp of the Divine order of things, it was physical and spiritual. As then so now, the true study of nature is a search for Divine thought, the Divine ideal that is veiled in material forms and relations. DO the mathematical terms that express these relations reveal the ideal? The threads of a woven fabric may not separately exhibit the ideal Of its design, but taken together in their orderly rela tion they do. If we discover intelligible relations in one department of the activities of nature we may well believe that we have touched the ideal of design; but if we find the same ideal in many departments, though modified like the instrumental variations played by the artist in executing a score of music, we may rationally believe in a unity of design coupled with a manifold purpose. The harmony is one throughout. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Shut Your Mouth

Download or read book Shut Your Mouth written by George Catlin and published by . This book was released on 1869 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Catlin discusses how closing one's mouth during sleep and day to day will foster improvement in mental and physical condition. This edition contains all of the original illustrations the author made. Walking among and studying various Native American tribes in the 19th century, the author noticed that many of the elders possessed a serene and well-preserved appearance. The young members of the tribe seemed especially healthy, with an innate resistance to certain illnesses and congenital conditions. Seeing the tribe's members sleeping, he noted that they all did so with closed mouths. Catlin pondered whether this habit contributed to the physical vigor of the people, and investigated further. After venturing back to the towns of the Midwest, he attests to witnessing how terrible many people who had practiced mouth breathing throughout life appeared, and became deeply opposed to its practice. This book details how children and young people can be encouraged against mouth breathing, and notes how different the facial countenance appears between mouth breathing people and nose breathers. Today, the notion that mouth breathing promotes physical ugliness or decrepitude is wholly disavowed as an eccentric idea with no basis in fact. However, sleep researchers have demonstrated that breathing with the mouth open while asleep can result in more snoring and thus a lower quality of sleep and therefore health. Overall, one could venture that Catlin's ideas possess a certain merit, even if his book is an exaggeration. Although primarily known today as a painter and traveller who became an emissary of sorts to the Plains tribes, George Catlin was also an enthusiastic if occasional writer. He admired the Native American peoples for their traditions and distinctive appearance, and took to painting them - his marked talent led to their respect for his gifts, and they duly welcomed him with friendship.

This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Past, Present and Future of the Society of Friends In a measure of that love which would gather all from their outward wanderings in search of the living among the dead, to the inward life and saving power of Truth, I would affectionately call our attention to that living way wherein our worthy forefathers were led to blessedness and peace, as well as to some of the causes which have operated in producing our lapsed condition, as a religious people professing, above all others, a quiet waiting, and humble dependence upon the enlivening, enlightening power of divine grace; which, it is testified, hath appeared to all men, as their in* ward, spiritual teacher, monitor, and guide. It was their faithfulness to this essential duty of humble, dependent waiting upon God, that Christ his dear Son might be made unto them wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption, that made our worthy forefathers that mighty power for good, in turning men from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, which characterized them, as they truly were, the friends of truth; for they were united in the one faith, which works by love to the purifying of the heart, unto, and in co-operation with, the great and holy Head of the living church, who wrought m and through them, both to will and to do of his own good pleasure.
