Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plato's dialogue the Timaeus-Critias presents two connected accounts, that of the story of Atlantis and its defeat by ancient Athens and that of the creation of the cosmos by a divine craftsman. This book offers a unified reading of the dialogue. It tackles a wide range of interpretative and philosophical issues. Topics discussed include the function of the famous Atlantis story, the notion of cosmology as 'myth' and as 'likely', and the role of God in Platonic cosmology. Other areas commented upon are Plato's concepts of 'necessity' and 'teleology', the nature of the 'receptacle', the relationship between the soul and the body, the use of perception in cosmology, and the work's peculiar monologue form. The unifying theme is teleology: Plato's attempt to show the cosmos to be organised for the good. A central lesson which emerges is that the Timaeus is closer to Aristotle's physics than previously thought.

Book Plato s Cosmology and its Ethical Dimensions

Download or read book Plato s Cosmology and its Ethical Dimensions written by Gabriela Roxana Carone and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-31 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although a great deal has been written on Plato's ethics, his cosmology has not received so much attention in recent times and its importance for his ethical thought has remained underexplored. By offering accounts of Timaeus, Philebus, Politicus and Laws X, the book reveals a strongly symbiotic relation between the cosmic and human sphere. It is argued that in his late period Plato presents a picture of an organic universe, endowed with structure and intrinsic value, which both urges our respect and calls for our responsible intervention. Humans are thus seen as citizens of a university that can provide a context for their flourishing even in the absence of good political institutions. The book sheds light on many intricate metaphysical issues in late Plato and brings out the close connections between his cosmology and the development of his ethics.

  • Pages : 573 pages

Download or read book Laws written by Plato and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-05-28 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Laws is Plato's last, longest, and perhaps, most famous work. It presents a conversation on political philosophy between three elderly men: an unnamed Athenian, a Spartan named Megillus, and a Cretan named Clinias. They worked to create a constitution for Magnesia, a new Cretan colony that would make all of its citizens happy and virtuous. In this work, Plato combines political philosophy with applied legislation, going into great detail concerning what laws and procedures should be in the state. For example, they consider whether drunkenness should be allowed in the city, how citizens should hunt, and how to punish suicide. The principles of this book have entered the legislation of many modern countries and provoke a great interest of philosophers even in the 21st century.

Book Plato s Republic

Download or read book Plato s Republic written by Plato and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-12-26 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eBook edition of "Plato's Republic" has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. The Republic is a Socratic dialogue, written by Plato around 380 BC, concerning justice, the order and character of the just city-state, and the just man. It is Plato's best-known work, and has proven to be one of the world's most influential works of philosophy and political theory, both intellectually and historically. In the book's dialogue, Socrates discusses with various Athenians and foreigners about the meaning of justice and whether the just man is happier than the unjust man. They consider the natures of existing regimes and then propose a series of different, hypothetical cities in comparison, culminating in Kallipolis, a hypothetical city-state ruled by a philosopher king. They also discuss the theory of forms, the immortality of the soul, and the role of the philosopher and of poetry in society.

Book Plato and Plotinus on Mysticism Epistemology and Ethics

Download or read book Plato and Plotinus on Mysticism Epistemology and Ethics written by David J. Yount and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-23 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues against the common view that there are no essential differences between Plato and the Neoplatonist philosopher, Plotinus, on the issues of mysticism, epistemology, and ethics. Beginning by examining the ways in which Plato and Plotinus claim that it is possible to have an ultimate experience that answers the most significant philosophical questions, David J. Yount provides an extended analysis of why we should interpret both philosophers as mystics. The book then moves on to demonstrate that both philosophers share a belief in non-discursive knowledge and the methods to attain it, including dialectic and recollection, and shows that they do not essentially differ on any significant views on ethics. Making extensive use of primary and secondary sources, Plato and Plotinus on Mysticism, Epistemology and Ethics shows the similarities between the thought of these two philosophers on a variety of philosophical questions, such as meditation, divination, wisdom, knowledge, truth, happiness and love.

Download or read book The Works of Plato written by Plato and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Works of Plato: Analysis of Plato & The Republic are original Cosimo editions of a four-volume work, translated and analyzed by Benjamin Jowett. All of the works contained within are also published as separate works, but the four-volume set has added commentary from Jowett, considered one of the best translators of Plato's works. There are three editions in the Cosimo set; Volumes I and II make up the first book, and Volumes III and IV make up the second and third books. This set is ideal for any scholar of Plato and philosophy, whether amateur or seasoned. Volume I is an analysis of Plato's life and writings, concentrating on Plato's philosophy and background. Volume II is Plato's celebrated work, The Republic. These first two volumes are the perfect introduction for anyone reading Plato for the first time. One of the greatest Western philosophers who ever lived, Plato (c. 428-347 B.C.) was a student of Socrates and teacher of Aristotle. Plato was greatly influenced by Socrates' teachings, often using him as a character in scripts and plays (Socratic dialogues), which he used to demonstrate philosophical ideas. Plato's dialogues were and still are used to teach a wide range of subjects, including politics, mathematics, rhetoric, logic, and, naturally, philosophy.
