Book Lightning Principles Instruments and Applications

Download or read book Lightning Principles Instruments and Applications written by Hans Dieter Betz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-04 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lightning represents a natural phenomenon of substantial interest. Due to its complex nature, research continues in many countries and reveals amazing results. Lightning is actively observed because of its relevance to Earth climate and air composition in addition to the classical aspects of related human fatalities and damage to forests, buildings, power lines, aircraft, structures and electronic devices. In this volume, the most important contemporary questions on lightning are addressed and analyzed under many experimental and theoretical aspects. Lightning detection techniques using ground-based and space-borne methods are described, along with network engineering and statistical analysis. Contributions detail research on atmospheric electricity, cloud physics, lightning physics, modeling of electrical storms and middle atmospheric events. Special phenomena such as triggered lightning and sprite observations are examined. Lightning-induced nitrogen oxides and their effects on atmospheric chemistry and climate are discussed. Each topic is presented by international experts in the field. Topics include: * air chemistry * convective storms * infrasound from lightning * lightning and climate change * lightning and precipitation * lightning and radiation * lightning and supercells * lightning and thunderstorms * lightning detection * lightning from space * lighting protection * lightning return strokes * observations and interpretations * spatial distribution and frequency * triggered lightning * weather extremes

Book Modern Climatology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Shih-Yu (Simon) Wang
  • Publisher : BoD – Books on Demand
  • Release : 2012-03-09
  • ISBN : 9535100955
  • Pages : 402 pages

Download or read book Modern Climatology written by Shih-Yu (Simon) Wang and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-03-09 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climatology, the study of climate, is no longer regarded as a single discipline that treats climate as something that fluctuates only within the unchanging boundaries described by historical statistics. The field has recognized that climate is something that changes continually under the influence of physical and biological forces and so, cannot be understood in isolation but rather, is one that includes diverse scientific disciplines that play their role in understanding a highly complex coupled "whole system" that is the earth's climate. The modern era of climatology is echoed in this book. On the one hand it offers a broad synoptic perspective but also considers the regional standpoint, as it is this that affects what people need from climatology. Aspects on the topic of climate change - what is often considered a contradiction in terms - is also addressed. It is all too evident these days that what recent work in climatology has revealed carries profound implications for economic and social policy; it is with these in mind that the final chapters consider acumens as to the application of what has been learned to date.

Book A Study of the Characteristics of Thunderstorm Cessation at the NASA Kennedy Space Center

Download or read book A Study of the Characteristics of Thunderstorm Cessation at the NASA Kennedy Space Center written by Michael Shawn Hinson and published by . This book was released on 1997-07-01 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lightning summary was developed for a 100x100 kilometer area centered at the NASA Kennedy Space Center. Spatial and temporal patterns, and first stroke peak currents were analyzed from 1986-1995. Three thunderstorms were chosen due to their proximity to the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) and examined for their end of storm characteristics. Radar echoes at the -10 deg C and -20 deg C temperature heights were associated with cloud to ground (CG) lightning strike locations from the National Lightning Detection Network. Electric fields were also examined during the same time frame for any correlations. A pattern was observed for the spatial distribution of CG lightning. An inland maximum in ground flash density was observed during the summer months for both negative and positive flashes. The summer months had the lowest percentage positive flashes (2.5%) while the maximum value occurred during the winter (11.4%). Although thunderstorms can occur at any time during the day, the diurnal distribution of lightning flashes showed that the afternoon (2000 UTC) was the time of maximum lightning activity. From a time history of radar echoes, it was found that a 45 dBZ echo, last detected at the -10 deg C temperature height, may be a good indicator of the end of lightning activity. The observed lag times between this lightning termination signature and the end of all CG lightning flashes was 30 min for all three thunderstorms.

Book Atlas of Satellite Observations Related to Global Change

Download or read book Atlas of Satellite Observations Related to Global Change written by Robert J. Gurney and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-11-25 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global environmental change is one of the most pressing international issues of the next century. There is a need to monitor the Earth's vital signs, from atmospheric ozone to tropical deforestation to sea level change. Models used to predict global changes have not yet fully used global observational data sets. Satellite data sets will be vital in addressing global change issues, in determining natural variability and monitoring global and regional changes. This timely volume provides an illustration of the variety of satellite-derived global data sets now available, their uses, advantages and limitations, and the range of variation that has already been observed with these data. A team of distinguished contributors provide a highly illustrated and accessible account suitable for the general scientific reader.
