Book Star Formation Galaxies and the Interstellar Medium

Download or read book Star Formation Galaxies and the Interstellar Medium written by Jose Franco and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-06-10 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enormously powerful phenomena of starbursts are examined in this book. These spectacular star-forming events are seen on large scales in some galaxies, often triggered by galactic interactions. An intriguing implication of starburst research is that active galactic nuclei (AGN) may not be powered by accreting black holes. Instead theories are presented where compact powerhouses of dust-enshrouded star formation lie at the core of AGN, with supernovae exploding roughly once per year within massive nuclear concentrations of gas. This book collects articles from a timely international conference in Elba, Italy, in 1992; these comprise a thorough review of the most important developments in galactic-scale star formation since the starburst revolution of the late 1980s. This text will introduce graduate students to this exciting area and keep experts apace with rapid developments in it.

Download or read book The Interstellar Medium written by James Lequeux and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-08-29 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describing interstellar matter in our galaxy in all of its various forms, this book also considers the physical and chemical processes that are occurring within this matter. The first seven chapters present the various components making up the interstellar matter and detail the ways that we are able to study them. The following seven chapters are devoted to the physical, chemical and dynamical processes that control the behaviour of interstellar matter. These include the instabilities and cloud collapse processes that lead to the formation of stars. The last chapter summarizes the transformations that can occur between the different phases of the interstellar medium. Emphasizing methods over results, The Interstellar Medium is written for graduate students, for young astronomers, and also for any researchers who have developed an interest in the interstellar medium.

Book The Interstellar Medium in Galaxies

Download or read book The Interstellar Medium in Galaxies written by J.M. van der Hulst and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-10-31 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Interstellar Medium in Galaxies is a collection of seven reviews covering the following constituents of the interstellar medium: dust, molecular gas, neutral atomic hydrogen, ionized hydrogen, and hot gas, and covering the abundances of heavy elements in the interstellar medium and the role of star formation. The reviews not only provide a good background in these subjects, but also describe in detail the most recent advances in the area and discuss the current problems in the field. The properties of the different constituents of the interstellar medium are discussed within the perspective of the difference in properties of the parent galaxies and the environment. The interplay between star formation and the characteristics of the interstellar medium is also discussed in detail. This volume provides very up-to-date material on the subject of the interstellar medium in galaxies and is useful both as a basic reference for professional scientists in this field and as an introductory book for astronomers who want to familiarize themselves with this field. This volume can also serve as an accompanying text book for graduate courses on the interstellar medium.

Book The Galactic Interstellar Medium

Download or read book The Galactic Interstellar Medium written by William Butler Burton and published by Springer. This book was released on 1992 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume three extended lectures addressing both students and experienced astronomers and astrophysicists cover a wealth of material on interstellar matter. The first lecture details the most recent observationaldata on interstellar matter inside and outside our galaxy, such as the global distribution of matter and atomic or molecular gas and its kinematics. The second treats its large-scale dynamics, including instabilities and star formation. In the third the physics and chemistry of molecular clouds are discussed. This book can be used as a textbook for advanced students in astrophysics.

Book Galaxies and Cosmology

Download or read book Galaxies and Cosmology written by F. Combes and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unique in its breadth of coverage and level of presentation, this textbook examines the nature of galaxies, extragalactic objects, the large-scale structure of the Universe, and cosmology more closely than general textbooks on astronomy, while still remaining comprehensible for advanced undergraduate students. One or several chapters are devoted to the following: the formation, classification and morphology of galaxies; the interactions between galaxies; the galactic interstellar medium; galactic kinematics; elliptical, spiral, and barred spiral galaxies; extragalactic radio sources, quasars, their line spectra, and other active galactic nuclei; the Universe as a whole.

Download or read book Diffuse Matter in Galaxies written by J. Audouze and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the interstellar medium is certainly one of the most recently developed astrophysical topics. Indeed, to understand the physical status of this medium, one should observe it at every wavelength, especially in radio and in the ranges which are only accessible from space such as Infra Red, X and gammas. Thanks to many new observations we now know that interstellar gas is quite inhomogeneous, since it is made from relatively cold and dense phases (interstellar clouds), surrounded by a relatively hot and tenuous medium. The summer school which took place from September 1 to 16 at the Institut d'Etudes Scientifiques of Cargese, and from which this book originates, was devoted to the analysis of this second diffuse, hot and tenuous component. The eleven sets of lectures which were presented at this school constitute the chapters of this book. They review different aspects (observations, determination of the physical properties and evolution) of this diffuse medium. In the first chapter, J. Lequeux (Marseille Observatory) introduces the study of the diffuse interstellar medium which plays a major role in galactic evolution. His contribution provides some historical references on this subject, such as a copious bibliography on the analysis and observations of the interstellar medium.
