Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1845, an estimated 2,500 emigrants left Independence and St. Joseph, Missouri, for the Willamette Valley in what was soon to become the Oregon Territory. It was general knowledge that the route of the Oregon Trail through the Blue Mountains and down the Columbia River to The Dalles was grueling and dangerous. About 1,200 men, women, and children in over two hundred wagons accepted fur trapper and guide Stephen Meek's offer to lead them on a shortcut across the trackless high desert of eastern Oregon. Those who followed Meek experienced a terrible ordeal when his memory of the terrain apparently failed. Lost for weeks with little or no water and a shortage of food, the Overlanders encountered deep dust, alkali lakes, and steep, rocky terrain. Many became ill and some died in the forty days it took to travel from the Snake River in present-day Idaho to the Deschutes River near Bend, Oregon. Stories persist that children in the group found gold nuggets in a small, dry creek bed along the way. From 2006 to 2011, Brooks Ragan and a team of specialists in history, geology, global positioning, metal detecting, and aerial photography spent weeks every spring and summer tracing the Meek Cutoff. They located wagon ruts, gravesites, and other physical evidence from the most difficult part of the trail, from Vale, Oregon, to the upper reaches of the Crooked River and to a location near Redmond where a section of the train reached the Deschutes. The Meek Cutoff moves readers back and forth in time, using surviving journals from members of the 1845 party, detailed day-to-day maps, aerial photographs, and descriptions of the modern-day exploration to document an extraordinary story of the Oregon Trail.

Book Blessed Are the Meek the Humble and the Bold

Download or read book Blessed Are the Meek the Humble and the Bold written by Elsie M. Collins and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-11-24 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elsie Collins is not your normal, everyday college professor in America. In her youth, she started out as Kissia descendent of African slaves, living in Wilsons Mill, North Carolina. Her upbringing brought her face-to-face with racism and discrimination, both subtly and overtly. The lines dividing black and white fascinated young Kissi; as she grew up, she decided to take a deeper look at race relations, nationwide. Blessed Are the Meek, the Humble, and the Bold is the memoir of Dr. Elsie Collins, a woman who spent nearly three-quarters of the twentieth century cutting through the color divide. Although she met with many challenges, Elsie never gave up on goals she had set for herself and her community. She never gave up on building strong relationships across lines of class, race, and culture. Elsie Collins has inspired hundreds on her long journey to personal freedom and success, from small towns in North Carolina to the big city of New York. Through the acquisition of knowledge, friendship, wisdom, she developed the judgment to discern when to be humble and when to be bold. Her story is a snapshot of race relations in America and a commentary on the insignificance of skin color in human relationships and in the search for the meaning of life.

Book Transactions with the World

Download or read book Transactions with the World written by Adam O’Brien and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their bold experimentation and bracing engagement with culture and politics, the “New Hollywood” films of the late 1960s and early 1970s are justly celebrated contributions to American cinematic history. Relatively unexplored, however, has been the profound environmental sensibility that characterized movies such as The Wild Bunch, Chinatown, and Nashville. This brisk and engaging study explores how many hallmarks of New Hollywood filmmaking, such as the increased reliance on location shooting and the rejection of American self-mythologizing, made the era such a vividly “grounded” cinematic moment. Synthesizing a range of narrative, aesthetic, and ecocritical theories, it offers a genuinely fresh perspective on one of the most studied periods in film history.

Book The Historical Renaissance

Download or read book The Historical Renaissance written by Heather Dubrow and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1988-10-19 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Historical Renaissance both exemplifies and examines the most influential current in contemporary studies of the English Renaissance: the effort to analyze the interplay between literature, history, and politics. The broad and varied manifestations of that effort are reflected in the scope of this collection. Rather than merely providing a sampler of any single critical movement, The Historical Renaissance represents the range of ways scholars and critics are fusing what many would once have distinguished as "literary" and "historical" concerns The volume includes studies of mid-Tudor culture as well as of Elizabethan and Stuart periods. The scope of the collection is also manifest in its list of contributors. They include historians and literary critics, and their work spans he spectrum from more traditional methods to those characteristic of what has been termed "New Historicism."One aim of the book is to investigate the apparent division between these older and more current approaches. Heather Dubrow and Richard Strier evaluate the contemporary interest in historical studies of the Renaissance, relating it to previous developments in the field, surveying its achievements and limitations, and suggesting new directions for future work.

Book Progress in Nuclear Energy

Download or read book Progress in Nuclear Energy written by M. M. R. Williams and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Nuclear Energy, Volume 5 covers the significant advances in several aspects of nuclear energy field. This book is composed six chapters that describe the progress in nuclear and gas-cooled reactors. The introductory chapter deals with the development and evolution of decay heat estimates and decay heat Standards, and illustrates the use of these estimates through comparison of both the actinide and fission product decay heat levels from typical fuel samples in a variety of reactor systems. The succeeding chapters present different practical methods for handling resonance absorption problem in the case of thermal reactor lattices and review the physics of the different noise phenomena. These topics are followed by discussions of the developed methodology for the description of breeding, conversion, long-term fuel logistics, and related subjects derived from the detailed mathematical description of the fuel cycle. The concluding chapters consider the historical development of heat transfer surfaces for gas-cooled reactors. These chapters also provide a complete set of differential nuclear data on the three technologically important americium isotopes, 241Am, 242Am, and 243Am, suitable for incorporation into the computer-based U.K. Nuclear Data Library. This book will prove useful to nuclear physicists and nuclear energy scientists and researchers.
