Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diseases of Tropical Plants The very rapid development of plant pathology during the past few years and the increasing interest in tropical agriculture have led the writer to prepare this introductory work on the Diseases of Tropical Plants. An extensive study of the fungi, bacteria, and other organisms which cause the diseases of plants was a necessary preliminary to the development of plant pathology, and the progress in this subject has been much more rapid in the north temperate zone than in the tropics. In the past few years, however, there has been a great awakening of interest in these studies throughout both the eastern and western tropics. Nevertheless, the literature is scattered, frequently indefinite in character, and presents an abundance of difficulties to the student at the present time. While gathering material for this book, one correspondent wrote that the time had not yet come when it was possible for any one to write a work on the diseases of tropical plants. The writer is now ready to agree with this gentleman, and to add that it is doubtful if the time will ever come when any one author can adequately treat of the tropics of the entire world and their plant diseases. Book A Handbook of the Fungus Diseases of West Indian Plants

Download or read book A Handbook of the Fungus Diseases of West Indian Plants written by Keith Bancroft and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of the Fungus Diseases of West Indian Plants: With Six Illustrated Plates During the past year the author of the following pages has been engaged, by kind permission of the Director of the Royal Gardens, Kew, in mycological work at the Jodrell Laboratory. This work, carried out under the guidance and advice of Mr. George Massee, Chief Assistant at the Royal Herbarium and Plant Pathologist to the Board of Agriculture, has included a study of a considerable mass of material sent to Kew from various tropical colonies, and has led the author to make for his own use a general survey of the principal West Indian fungus diseases of plants, and also of other tropical fungus diseases. The following pages are published with the hope that they may prove useful as a summary to workers in tropical agricultural departments, and that there may b set before the planters in the West Indies an account of the pathological effects caused by their fungus pests and an indication of the methods of treatment which have been recommended from time to time. It has been thought fit to include along with the diseases which have been reported to occur in the West Indies the more important diseases of the same crops when they are cultivated in other parts of the world. The introduction contains some general remarks on parasitic fungi, a brief discussion of the methods of treat ment most commonly in use for fungus diseases and an indication of the more important problems which are connected with the study of plant pathology in the West Indies at the present time. A diagnosis of each parasitic fungus has been given wherever it was possible to do so, and, in the more important diseases, the methods of treatment which have been actually recommended, or which would appear likely to prove effective, have been included. The more important references have been appended under each disease, and six illustrated plates have been prepared. The ground covered by the parts dealing with West Indian parasitic fungi is much the same as that contained in a paper recently contributed to the West Indian Bulletin. Published in Vol. X., No. 3, of that journal under the author's name, and entitled Fungi Causing Diseases of Cultivated Plants in the West Indies A word of explanation, therefore, appears necessary with regard to certain not inconsiderable differences between that paper and this book. Owing to the loss of time incident to transmitting the paper to England before its publication in the West Indian Bulletin, the author was not referred to in connexion with certain modifications and alterations which were made by the Imperial Mycologist to the West Indian Department of Agriculture; the paper published in the West Indian Bulletin, therefore, did not altogether express the author's views on the fungus diseases of the West Indies. Book Minnesota Plant Diseases Classic Reprint

Download or read book Minnesota Plant Diseases Classic Reprint written by Edward Monroe Freeman and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minnesota Plant Diseases It is probably safe to say that millions of dollars are lost in Minnesota yearly by the ravages of plant diseases. Agriculturists and horticulturists all over the world have of late years directed a great deal of attention toward the study of plant diseases and the methods of combating them. The Department of Agriculture of the United States has done vastly more than any other institution in the world along this line and the results have been well worth the efforts, for many efficient methods of fighting these pests have been devised. In many cases where cure is impossible an intelligent understanding of the conditions and effects of a disease will aid in prevention. The dissemination of such knowledge is of very great value. It is a very evident fact that all agricultural pursuits are taking great strides, and the education of those boys and girls who are about to cultivate or manage the cultivation of lands is becoming more and more imperative. The possession of an accurate knowledge of plant diseases and their causes is not only of commercial use to the farmer, both in cure and prevention, but also, by making him an intelligent observer, adds hosts of assistants to the small corps of men who are devoting their time to this study of botanical science. The advantages of such a condition amongst agriculturists would far surpass those where the mere knowledge of present methods of prevention and cure obtains. In fact it is only with the intelligent and hearty co operation of farmers that such work can successfully go forward. It is not the aim of this work therefore to catalogue all of the ills that Minnesota plants are heir to, but its chkf object is to disseminate knowledge of the destructive parasites of the useful plants of this state, to assist all concerned in the cultivation of plants to a more intelligent and thorough understanding of the habits of these parasites, and to point out established methods of combating such diseases. Kecipes are not the aim of such a work-- these are of value and as such are introduced; but by far the most valuable effort should be the inculcation of the knowledge of the habits and life-stories of those organisms which are the causes of disease. Upon such knowledge, widely disseminated, can be built a substantial system of disease prevention. In short, the aim of this work is rather educational than immediately practical, for in the former feature the author hopes that it will be ultimately most useful. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fungoid Diseases of Farm and Garden Crops That crops are subject to diseases of various kinds, has been known for thousands of years. In the Bible we find reference to mildews and blasted crops, while among the Roman writers a number of different diseases were recognized. As early as the middle of the eighteenth century, considerable study had been made of some of the fungi which caused plant diseases, but even as late as the third and fourth decade of the nineteenth century, there were some scientific agriculturists who insisted that the spots and discolorations caused by fungi, or the spore masses of these fungi, were but parts of the plant itself, while even to the present day, some persons regard such; epidemics as punishment or warnings sent by the: Almighty to a sinful people.
