Book The Disappearing Tax Base Is Foreign Direct Investment FDI Eroding Corporate Income Taxes

Download or read book The Disappearing Tax Base Is Foreign Direct Investment FDI Eroding Corporate Income Taxes written by Reint Gropp and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the link between FDI, corporate taxation, and corporate tax revenues. We find strong evidence that FDI in (out) flows are affected by tax regimes in the host (home) countries and FDI flows in turn affect the corporate tax base. Simulations of European Union (EU) harmonization (isolating the revenue effect of FDI on the tax base from direct effects through the rate harmonization) suggest that high (low) tax countries would gain (lose) revenue from harmonization; these effects may be substantial. Our results also suggest that EU tax harmonization would significantly affect the net FDI position of some countries.

Book The Disappearing Corporate Tax Base

Book excerpt: In the fall of 2011, just as the last of the ARRA money was going out to the states, Congress passed the Budget Control Act, which put 10-year caps on federal spending, slamming the brakes on federal support to the states. [...] customer buys their product, the company sends a significant amount of the purchase price to the tax haven country to pay for the use of the intellectual property. [...] The staff at the Federal Reserve found that the decline in the level of corporate taxes paid was not due to states reducing corporate tax rates over the past two and half decades, but for two other reasons: a new tax avoidance strategy by corporations and new tax credits enacted by states. [...] Demanding that the corporations that have grown and prospered from the social, political, and economic structures in America contribute to the support of the nation is simple equity. [...] Part of the reason corporations have been able to accumulate so much wealth and power is because they have been able to shirk their responsibilities to the nation and to the American people by continually reducing the share of their profits they provide to support the common good.

Book excerpt: Don’t miss the JOE PICKETT series—now streaming on Paramount+ Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett has two lethal cases to contend with in this electrifying novel from #1 New York Times-bestselling author C.J. Box. Wyoming's new governor isn't sure what to make of Joe Pickett, but he has a job for him that is extremely delicate. A prominent female British executive never came home from the high-end guest ranch she was visiting, and the British Embassy is pressing hard. Pickett knows that happens sometimes--these ranches are stocked with handsome young cowboys, and "ranch romances" aren't uncommon. But no sign of her months after she vanished? That suggests something else. At the same time, his friend Nate Romanowski has asked Joe to intervene with the Feds on behalf of falconers who can no longer hunt with eagles even though their permits are in order. Who is blocking the falconers and why? The more Joe investigates both cases, the more someone wants him to go away. Is it because of the missing woman or because he's become Nate's advocate? Or are they somehow connected? The answers, when they come, will be even worse than he'd imagined.

Book Economic Globalization And Asia Essays On Finance Trade And Taxation

Download or read book Economic Globalization And Asia Essays On Finance Trade And Taxation written by Ramkishen S Rajan and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003-12-04 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term “economic globalization” has been discussed extensively in the popular press, by business executives and by policy-makers all over the world. While academic economists have made some excellent contributions to specific, technical aspects of economic globalization, there appears to be a need for economists to discuss the broader aspects of the issue in a more accessible manner. Failing this, the general debate will be informed only by the writings of non-economists.That is the motivation for this book, which is a collection of essays on various aspects of economic globalization in general, but with specific reference to Asia.

Book The Elgar Guide to Tax Systems

Download or read book The Elgar Guide to Tax Systems written by Emilio Albi and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tax systems have changed considerably in the past three decades. These fundamental changes have been the result of economic globalization, new political stances, and also of developments in public finance thought. The chapters in this volume offer a critical review of those changes from the perspectives of tax theory, policy and tax administration practice, and the political economy of taxation. The authors also consider what sort of reforms are worth undertaking in tax policy design, tax administration and enforcement, and the assignment of sub-national taxes. The authors in this volume are among the top scholars in the study of public finance. The development of tax systems in OECD countries is examined, as are various methods of taxation (direct versus indirect, corporate income tax, value added tax and others) employed throughout the world. The politics of public finance and the institutions used to administer it are also analyzed.Reflecting on the influence of the research itself, Richard Bird closes the book with a chapter exploring whether or not economic literature has focused on the issues and problems that really matter to policymakers and whether it has influenced the development of tax systems."--Publisher's website.

Book Why Detroit Matters

Download or read book Why Detroit Matters written by Brian Doucet and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2017-04-06 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detroit has come to symbolise deindustrialization and the challenges, and opportunities, it presents. As many cities struggle with urban decline, racial and ethnic tensions and the consequences of neoliberal governance and political fragmentation, Detroit’s relevance grows stronger. Why Detroit Matters bridges academic and non-academic responses to this extreme example of a fractured and divided, post-industrial city. Contributions from many of the leading scholars on Detroit are joined by influential writers, planners, artists and activists who have contributed chapters drawing on their experiences and ideas. The book concludes with interviews with some of the city’s most important visionaries who are engaged in inspiring practices which provide powerful lessons for Detroit and other cities around the world. The book will be a valuable reference for scholars, practitioners and students from across disciplines including geography, planning, architecture, sociology, urban studies, history, American studies, and economics.
