Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diplomacy of the Great War The object of this book is limited. It has the same relation to a treatise on diplomacy that a high school "algebra" has to a text-book in "celestial mechanics." Very little has been written in America on European diplomacy. We have not been interested in the subject. Suddenly the roar of cannon has broken in on our ordinary life and month by month as the War drags on the vital necessity of knowing more about Europe becomes apparent. Many people ask: "What is it all about?" The more determined ask: "Where can we find out about it?" In our larger public libraries there is a great deal of material, but interest in such matters had been so slight that this material was not fully catalogued. What the libraries have to offer in our own language is mostly from English sources and as Great Britain is a party to the dispute it is unadvisable to hear only one side. A general wish is evident among us to do something towards a settlement of the conflict, not merely to hasten the cessation of hostilities, but especially towards the establishment of decent relations between our European cousins after the War. All chance of success in this direction depends on our having some conception of the issues at stake. So it has seemed to me worth the effort to attempt an introductory text-book, a first-year course in European diplomacy, more especially, as for many years the subject has fascinated me. Sooner or later the War will bum itself out. The diplomatists will gather around their traditional "green table" to see what they can save from the general bankruptcy. The news of their proceedings will come to us in fragments, cablegrams to our daily papers, articles on one or another phase of the situation in our magazines. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diplomacy of the War of 1914: The Beginnings of the War In the analysis of the documents, it has seemed better to bring out each successive link of the chain forged to involve the unhappy powers of Europe in this war. Some repetition has been necessary for the sake of clearness, and at times I have been obliged to sacrifice the chrono logical order so as to adhere to a logical exposition in the unfolding of the events of the opening scenes in the great est drama oi human history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diplomacy and the War At the moment when the revolver shots rang out in the streets of Serajevo, whose consequences plunged the world deeper into bloodshed and destruction than any other single human act, I was strongly opposed to the Cabinet of Tisza. The Government determined to demand a reckoning for the murder; and, notwithstanding my opposition to the Cabinet, I supported its foreign policy. The mass of the people did the same. The first question to which I must reply is, therefore: What motive caused us to support active opposition to Serbia? Prior to the Napoleonic Coalition, the history of Europe was based upon the independent policy and mutual competition of single powers. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diplomatic Background of the World War There is no intention to present in this book the results of independent research. The purpose in writing it has been to present in brief and summary form materials which are at present available only in numerous and lengthy volumes. The need for compression has perhaps led to abruptness in style and has prevented the possibility of extended treat ment of numerous questions which are referred to only in passing. But it is presumed that the reader is familiar with the internal history of the various European countries and will, therefore, be able to supply meaning to names and events to which a mere reference is here made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diplomatic Background of the War, 1870-1914 On June 28, 1914, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir apparent to the throne of the austro-hungarian Monarchy, was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist in the streets of the chief town of Bosnia. Doubtless not more than the merest handful of the millions who read the news on the following day, realized that the murder would carry in its train consequences of extraordinary moment. The popular mind had become accustomed to assassination of royalty. The Empress Elizabeth of Austria, King Humbert of Italy, King Carlos of Portugal, King George of Greece, had all experienced a similar fate and the international diplomatic situation had not been afiected. Who could guess that this new crime would prove to be of greater significance? And yet within five weeks of the murder and apparently as a direct result, the five greatest Powers of Europe were battling in the most terrific war of history. It is certainly one of the best, and most enjoyable [books] on international relations past and present ... DIPLOMACY should be read for the sheer historical sweep, the characterisations, the story-telling, the ability to look at large parts of the world as a whole' Malcolm Rutherford in the FINANCIAL TIMES

Book Recent Revelations of European Diplomacy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Recent Revelations of European Diplomacy Classic Reprint written by George Peabody Gooch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Revelations of European Diplomacy This little book has been written in the hope of aiding students of the World War and its causes to keep pace With the almost bewildering accumulation of material. It has grown out of a paper read to the British Institute of International Affairs on December 12, 1922, and published in the ?ozmml of the Institute for January, 1923. A reprint met with a considerable demand at home and abroad, and I have been pressed from many quarters to bring the survey up to date. The political and diplomatic revelations of the last four years are no less significant than those reviewed in the original address, and many of them remain unfamiliar to English readers. I have confined myself to publications subse quent to the outbreak of war, and illustrating the period from the accession of William II to the Treaty of Versailles. Magazine articles are only mentioned When they are of exceptional importance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The region between the Baltic and the Black Sea was marked by a set of crises and conflicts in the 1920s and 1930s, demonstrating the diplomatic, military, economic or cultural engagement of France, Germany, Russia, Britain, Italy and Japan in this highly volatile region, and critically damaging the fragile post-Versailles political arrangement. The editors, in naming this region as "Middle Europe" seek to revive the symbolic geography of the time and accentuate its position, situated between Big Powers and two World Wars. The ten case studies in this book combine traditional diplomatic history with a broader emphasis on the geopolitical aspects of Big-Power rivalry to understand the interwar period. The essays claim that the European Big Powers played a key role in regional affairs by keeping the local conflicts and national movements under control and by exploiting the region's natural resources and military dependencies, while at the same time strengthening their prestige through cultural penetration and the cultivation of client networks. The authors, however, want to avoid the simplistic view that the Big Powers fully dominated the lesser players on the European stage. The relationship was indeed hierarchical, but the essays also reveal how the "small states" manipulated Big-Power disagreements, highlighting the limits of the latters' leverage throughout the 1920s and the 1930s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stakes of Diplomacy It is a queer and very important fact, the per sistence with which hypocrisy coptinues to be the homage vice pays to virtue. [vernments will send armies forth to turn nations into ash heaps and shambles, but they always proclaim they are doing it to enhance civilization, safeguard liberty, and fulfill the wishes Of the all - highest. German officials did commit two bits of frankness before the invasion of Belgium, the one containing the phrase about a scrap of paper, the other stating that the violation of an inoffensive neutral was a wrong. But the candor proved too costly, not only with the outer world but with the German people, and ever since there has been a persistent propaganda to blur and confuse the matter. In spite of the supposed efficiency of the German state education, in spite of the supposed prussian ization of the people, their stomachs were not strong enough for the truth about the minds of their rulers. The whole ghastly business had to be overlaid with buncombe even for the greatest military people in the world. They had to be told, in fact they insisted upon being told, they were knights withodt fear and above reproach.
