Book excerpt: This lecture is Nietzsche's initial formulation of the Dionysian concept, which later becomes central to his philosophical work, especially present in "The Birth of Tragedy." The original German title is "Die dionysische Weltanschauung", usually translated as "The Dionysian World-view". Here Nietzsche contrasts two meta-psychological Archetypical artistic forces: the Dionysian and the Apollonian, drawing heavily on Greek mythology. The Dionysian aspect represents chaos, emotion, irrationality, and the uncontrollable aspects of human nature, similar to the characteristics of the Greek god Dionysus, associated with wine, fertility, ritual madness, and religious ecstasy. Conversely, the Apollonian represents order, reason, and the aesthetic qualities of structure and form, associated with the god Apollo, the god of art, light, and reason. This is where Carl Jung gets his Anima/ Animus dichotomy. The Dionysian Worldview was given by the newly minted Professor Nietzsche at the Basel Museum held on February 1, 1870, and subsequently published but the foundation managed by his sister. This lecture was first published in the volume "Gesammelte Werke" edited by Peter Gast (a pseudonym for Heinrich Köselitz, a close associate of Nietzsche) and Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche (Nietzsche's sister). They were included in the second series of these collected works under the title "Philologica," which was published in 1897. This was part of the effort to compile and publish Nietzsche's unpublished manuscripts and lecture notes after his death. This is one of three major Basel lectures he gave immediately after he accepted a position at the University of Basel. At the young age of 24, Nietzsche accepted a philology professorship in 1869, which facilitated his acquaintance with the composer residing in Tribschen. During this period, Nietzsche delivered three lectures that prefigured his future focus: 'The Greek Musical Drama' on January 18, 'Socrates and Tragedy' on February 1, and the 'The Dionysian Worldview' in July/August 1870. Feeling constrained by philological topics, Nietzsche sought a professorship in philosophy. His writing primarily reflects influences from two significant sources: the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer and the musical and theoretical works of Richard Wagner. This new 2024 translation from the original German, Latin and Greek manuscript contains a new Afterword by the translator, a timeline of Nietzsche's life and works, an index with descriptions of his core concepts and summaries of his complete body of works. This translation is designed to allow the armchair philosopher to engage deeply with Nietzsche's works without having to be a full-time Academic. The language is modern and clean, with simplified sentence structures and diction to make Nietzsche's complex language and arguments as accessible as possible. This Reader's Edition also contains extra material that amplifies the manuscript with autobiographical, historical and linguistic context. The first, "How to Read Nietzsche" shows Nietzsche's philosophy as sufficiently consistent such that readers should be able to turn to any passage throughout Nietzsche's writings and have their bearings. The second presents the first edition's frolicking, romping, and exhorting dithyrambs in light of the insight that the Dionysian Worldview is the unifying principle of Nietzsche's philosophy. This includes a discussion of the Mysteries of Dionysus as they relate to Plato's dialogs and the Eleusinian Mysteries. Lastly, the third part provides Scalambrino's translation of Nietzsche's so-called "Madness Letters" from January, 1889. The critical side of Friedrich Nietzsche's (1844-1900) philosophy was aimed at modernity. The positive side of Nietzsche's philosophy was aimed at retrieving the Worldview of ancient Greek culture. As incoherent as the critical side of Nietzsche's philosophy may seem, the positive side of his philosophy is consistent; thus, the positive side can render both sides more coherent. Ancient Greek culture honored the sense in which existence is governed by divine forces - forces which exceed the powers of mortals. Similarly, existential mysteries, such as fate, death, and love, exceed our ability to fully grasp them, and, as evidenced by their capacity to overwhelm us, they somehow involve divinity. Thus, according to Nietzsche, the ancient Greeks could exist in authentic communion with such divine forces because the Greeks had a noble relation to their own mortality. This can be envisioned from their point of view regarding tragedy, and Nietzsche called this ancient Greek perspective on existence "the Dionysian Worldview." According to the ancient Greeks: Time is a circle, Dionysus is a god, and a "god" is "that which lights up a world." Thus, on the one hand, the general response which the Dionysian Worldview calls for regarding the Eternal Recurrence of existence, including of course the tragic, may be philosophically characterized as Amor Fati. On the other hand, Full Throttle Heart characterizes the particular experience of Amor Fati in response to tragedy: a response that confirms the Dionysian Worldview by experiencing tragedy as the rapture and ecstasy of divine affectivity.

In 1869, at the young age of 24, Nietzsche accepted a professorship in philology, which facilitated his acquaintance with the composer, who lived in Tribschen. In 1871, he began work on his book, originally titled "Origin and Goal of Tragedy". When it was published in Leipzig in January 1872, Die Geburt der Tragödie aus dem Geist der Musik (The Birth of Tragedy from the Spirit of Music) was warmly received by Wagner. The scholarly community, however, remained largely silent, except for the classical philologist Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff (1848-1931), Nietzsche's former colleague, who criticized the book in his "Zukunftsphilologie. Wilamowitz's critique shaped the direction of classical studies well into the 1940s, leaving Nietzsche largely marginalized. Nietzsche was 27 at the time of publication, and largely summarizes all of his major ideas up until that point. This translation is from the second edition Nietzsche published in 1886, which was re-titled "The birth of tragedy or Hellenism and Pessimism", sometimes translated "Greekness and Pessimism". This second edition contains the famous essay "Attempt at Self-Criticism". Here he introduces to the public the concepts of the Apollonian and Dionysian forces, representing the rational, orderly aspects of human existence and the chaotic, instinctual elements, respectively. Nietzsche argues that the interplay between these forces is central to the creation of meaningful art, particularly in the genre of tragedy, which he sees as a profound expression of the human condition. The Birth of Tragedy has two different subtitles from two editions both published by Nietzsche; the first was "from the spirit of music" and the second "Hellenism or Pessimism". Composed from essays written from 1869-71, The Birth of Tragedy was first printed in Leipzig in 1872 under the title "Die Geburt der Tragödie aus dem Geiste der Musik”. In 1886, the same publisher printed a new new edition under the new title "Die Geburt der Tragödie oder Griechentum und Pessimismus" with a second preface "Versuch einer Selbstkritik” where Nietzsche criticizes his own work. Both prefaces from these two versions are included here. Here in his first major work, Nietzsche articulates a semi-Hegelian tragic dichotomy of pre-cosmogonic energy underlying all of human struggle made manifest most explicitly in Greek tragedy. For the Greeks understood most clearly the forces which were driving the ethos of their civilization, finding a balance between chaos and order. It is a suspiciously metaphysical description of the origins of human culture from a man who believed it was his purpose as a “world-historical” individual to destroy the lie of the existence of Metaphysics. For as much as he criticized German Critical and Idealistic Philosophy of German, he shared an unwavering admiration for the Greek Philosophers, nearly to the point of worship.
