Book excerpt: "A historical novel that will enthrall you... I was utterly captivated..." — Joanna Goodman, author of The Home for Unwanted Girls AN INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER For fans of Sold on a Monday or The Home for Unwanted Girls, Shelley Wood's novel tells the story of the Dionne Quintuplets, the world's first identical quintuplets to survive birth, told from the perspective of a midwife in training who helps bring them into the world. Reluctant midwife Emma Trimpany is just 17 when she assists at the harrowing birth of the Dionne quintuplets: five tiny miracles born to French farmers in hardscrabble Northern Ontario in 1934. Emma cares for them through their perilous first days and when the government decides to remove the babies from their francophone parents, making them wards of the British king, Emma signs on as their nurse. Over 6,000 daily visitors come to ogle the identical “Quints” playing in their custom-built playground; at the height of the Great Depression, the tourism and advertising dollars pour in. While the rest of the world delights in their sameness, Emma sees each girl as unique: Yvonne, Annette, Cécile, Marie, and Émilie. With her quirky eye for detail, Emma records every strange twist of events in her private journals. As the fight over custody and revenues turns increasingly explosive, Emma is torn between the fishbowl sanctuary of Quintland and the wider world, now teetering on the brink of war. Steeped in research, The Quintland Sisters is a novel of love, heartache, resilience, and enduring sisterhood—a fictional, coming-of-age story bound up in one of the strangest true tales of the past century.

Book The Miracle Tragedy of the Dionne Quintuplets

Download or read book The Miracle Tragedy of the Dionne Quintuplets written by Sarah Miller and published by Schwartz & Wade. This book was released on 2019-08-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this riveting, beyond-belief true story from the author of The Borden Murders, meet the five children who captivated the entire world. When the Dionne Quintuplets were born on May 28, 1934, weighing a grand total of just over 13 pounds, no one expected them to live so much as an hour. Overnight, Yvonne, Annette, Cécile, Émilie, and Marie Dionne mesmerized the globe, defying medical history with every breath they took. In an effort to protect them from hucksters and showmen, the Ontario government took custody of the five identical babies, sequestering them in a private, custom-built hospital across the road from their family--and then, in a stunning act of hypocrisy, proceeded to exploit them for the next nine years. The Dionne Quintuplets became a more popular attraction than Niagara Falls, ogled through one-way screens by sightseers as they splashed in their wading pool at the center of a tourist hotspot known as Quintland. Here, Sarah Miller reconstructs their unprecedented upbringing with fresh depth and subtlety, bringing to new light their resilience and the indelible bond of their unique sisterhood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ray and Estelle Rouse became Bah's in 1941 and raised three children who also became Bah's. Over the course of sixty-two years of marriage, they lived in Washington DC, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, New Mexico, Puerto Rico, New York, North Carolina, and Arizona, and traveled to England, Israel, Italy, Spain, Guatemala, and Mexico, visiting Bah's and teaching the Bah' Faith wherever they went. From humble beginnings on a shoestring budget, they managed to educate their children and pursue their own dreams as well. Estelle was a prolific writer working on her autobiography at the time of her passing at age eighty-seven. Ms. Kaufman draws on Ray and Estelle's own words to tell this story of one family's journey through the twentieth century that took them from post-World War I to space travel and beyond, from the civil rights era to the computer age. As the last remaining survivor of her birth family, she shares the story of her parents' conversion to the Bah' Faith and takes a light-hearted look at how their faith affected family life, parenting styles, and the changing relationships within the family.

Book Quintland The Canadian Dionne Quintuplets During the Great Depression

Download or read book Quintland The Canadian Dionne Quintuplets During the Great Depression written by Blake Sullivan and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-12-08 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject History - America, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: The 1930s were very dark and depressing years for most Canadians. The Great Depression had global ramifications and Canada did not avoid the economic strain that was impacting the rest of the world: “millions of Canadians were out of work, and hundred of thousands more struggled to survive on drastically reduced incomes”. With the births of Annette, Cécile, Emilie, Marie and Yvonne Dionne in 1934, the province of Ontario, coupled with Canada, discovered a “Human Goldmine”. From the moment the Quints were born, they were subjected to awful living standards and were abused by the Provincial government for financial gains. But, why were the Dionne Quintuplets and their parents, Elzire and Oliva, manipulated into such a horrible fate? During an era that was struggling economically, the Ontario government took advantage of a very rare event to make short-term financial gains. The small Franco-Ontario hamlet of Corbeil, birthplace of the Quintuplets, became a booming tourist attraction that generated massive crowds and huge sums of money. By analyzing the Ontario government’s political policies during the Great Depression it is evident that the Dionne Quintuplets were unjustly treated as provincial property rather than ordinary children. Specifically, the Ontario Liberal government abused its political power and influence to legally, economically and culturally take advantage of a single family all to bolster its popularity and security in a depressing and dark era.

Book The Social Study of Childhood

Download or read book The Social Study of Childhood written by Sally McNamee and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-10 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, children were often understood in relation to their development towards adulthood, but the 'new paradigm' of childhood studies has since shown how they should be taken more seriously as active participants in their own lives. Studying childhood is not just a question of research on children, but increasingly a practice of research with them. With this 'new paradigm' having now come of age, Sally McNamee offers a comprehensive overview of the current state of childhood studies and its history. Taking a thematic approach, she looks at how issues such as rights and citizenship, the state, the family, school, work, leisure, health and globalisation shape and are shaped by children. The Social Study of Childhood is an accessible introduction for students from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds such as childhood studies, sociology, psychology, social work and education. With reflection points for discussion and suggestions for further reading at the end of each chapter, it is an engaging and stimulating account of how and why children's voices deserve to be heard in today's world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book follows my life from infancy through adulthood and details the significant people in my life. It also captures, I believe, what it is like to experience psychosis. Some of the symptoms include hallucinations, faulty judgment, and an extreme sensitivity to the environment, to name only a few. But it is also about hope and empathy. I survived the emotional instability, lung cancer, and a divorce. Through it all, I had over twenty years of teaching. I founded a children's theater, and I had my writing as a part-time job. I taught in excellent public schools and one private school for severely emotionally challenged youngsters. I taught all levels from Head Start through adult. My last assignment, I worked with special needs students and supervised two aides in the same excellent system for over ten years. I have included samples of some of my writings so the reader would get to understand me even better. Today I am experiencing a well-deserved retirement. I do not consider writing "work" but rather something I enjoy, and I look back on my life and feel the strength that comes from survival!
