Book Dam Breach Modeling Technology

Download or read book Dam Breach Modeling Technology written by V.P. Singh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dams are constructed for economic development, and their construction involves large investments of money, and natural and human resources. Of the various types of dams constructed around the globe, earth dams are the most common type and constitute the vast majority of dams. When adam fails, it culminates in the sudden release of artificially stored water which, in turn, becomes a potential menace to virtually everything downstream. The dam failure may result in loss of life and property. In recent years, instances of dam failure in the world have been too many, and the resulting loss too high. As a result, dam safety pro grams have been developed in most countries of the world since the beginning of the nineteenth eighties. · Earth dams are more susceptible to failure than other types. The cause of failure is often either overtopping or piping. The modeling of dam breaching due to either or both of these causes is of fundamental importance to development of dam-safety programs. This book is, therefore, an attempt to present some aspects of earth-dam breach modeling technology. It is hoped that others will be stimulated to write more comprehensive texts on this subject of growing interest and importance. The book is divided into eight chapters. The first chapter is introductory and discusses some aspects of dams and dam failures in the world.

  • Pages : 100 pages

Download or read book Nagualism written by Frank G. Ripel and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of this book reveals the secret teachings of Nagualism as they have been transmitted to him by don Juan and by the death opponent, Carlos Castaneda's masters. Subject of the book is the organic and systematic reconsideration of the topics discussed by Carlos Castaneda, such as the perception's widening, the art of stalking, the practice of dreaming and the control of the intent. The author does not confine himself to re-present the teachings already developed in Castaneda's works but, thanks to the teaching he has been given, he can bridge the gaps left by the well-known anthropologist. In Castaneda's books, in fact, many topics remain pending; for example, only the first gates of dreaming and the first abstract cores are described. So, for the first time, the three rules of the Nagual, the secret of the three recapitulations, all eight gates of dreaming and all twenty-one abstract cores are revealed.

  • Publisher : LSU Press

  • ISBN : 0807137561
  • Pages : 92 pages

Download or read book Breach written by Richard Campanella and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2010-04-26 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Breach, New Orleans native Nicole Cooley recalls Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath in gritty, poignant detail, bearing witness to the destruction of a region and to its recovery. Ranging from the urgent to the reflective, these poems speak not only to the horrors of the immediate disaster, but also to family dynamics in a time of crisis and to the social, political, and cultural realities that contextualized the storm and its wake. In the title poem, Cooley invokes the multiple meanings of the word “breach”—breach of the levees, breach of trust—which resonate with survivors in the Crescent City, and in “Evacuation,” she recounts her efforts to encourage her parents to leave the city and her harrowing three-day wait to hear from them after they refused. A number of poems, including “Write a Love Letter to Camellia Grill,” “The Superdome: A Suite,” and “Biloxi Bay Bridge Still Out,” offer a broad range of voices and experiences to expand the perspective beyond Cooley’s own family. With language and images both powerful and precise, this compelling collection dares us to “watch the surface of the city tear like loose skin.”

Book All Bullshit and Lies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Chris Heffer
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2020-07-01
  • ISBN : 019092330X
  • Pages : 271 pages

Download or read book All Bullshit and Lies written by Chris Heffer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-01 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a postfactual world in which claims are often held to be true only to the extent that they confirm pre-existing or partisan beliefs, this book asks crucial questions: how can we identify the many forms of untruthfulness in discourse? How can we know when their use is ethically wrong? How can we judge untruthfulness in the messiness of situated discourse? Drawing on pragmatics, philosophy, psychology, and law, All Bullshit and Lies? develops a comprehensive framework for analyzing untruthful discourse in situated context. TRUST, or Trust-related Untruthfulness in Situated Text, sees untruthfulness as encompassing not only deliberate manipulations of what is believed to be true (the insincerity of withholding, misleading, and lying) but also the distortions that arise from an irresponsible attitude towards the truth (dogma, distortion, and bullshit). Chris Heffer discusses times when truth is not "in play," as in jokes or fiction, as well as instances when concealing the truth can achieve a greater good. The TRUST framework demonstrates that untruthfulness becomes unethical in discourse, though, when it unjustifiably breaches the trust an interlocutor invests in the speaker. In addition to the theoretical framework, this book provides a clear, practical heuristic for analyzing discursive untruthfulness and applies it to such cases of public discourse as the Brexit "battle bus," Trump's tweet about voter fraud, Blair and Bush's claims about weapons of mass destruction, and the multiple forms of untruthfulness associated with the Skripal poisoning case. In All Bullshit and Lies? Chris Heffer turns a critical eye to fundamental questions of truthfulness and trust in our society. This timely and interdisciplinary investigation of discourse provides readers a deeper theoretical understanding of untruthfulness in a postfactual world.

Book The Discord of Gods

  • Author : Jenn Lyons
  • Publisher : Tor Books
  • Release : 2022-04-26
  • ISBN : 1250175690
  • Pages : 746 pages

Download or read book The Discord of Gods written by Jenn Lyons and published by Tor Books. This book was released on 2022-04-26 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Discord of Gods marks the epic conclusion to Jenn Lyons's Chorus of Dragons series, closing out the saga that began with The Ruin of Kings, for fans of Brandon Sanderson and Patrick Rothfuss. THEIR CONFLICT COULD END THEM ALL. Relos Var's final plans to enslave the universe are on the cusp of fruition. He believes there's only one being in existence that might be able to stop him: the demon Xaltorath. As these two masterminds circle each other, neither is paying attention to the third player on the board, Kihrin. Unfortunately, keeping himself classified in the 'pawn' category means Kihrin must pretend to be everything the prophecies threatened he'd become: the destroyer of all, the sun eater, a mindless, remorseless plague upon the land. It also means finding an excuse to not destroy the people he loves (or any of the remaining Immortals) without arousing suspicion. Kihrin's goals are complicated by the fact that not all of his 'act' is one. His intentions may be sincere, but he's still being forced to grapple with the aftereffects of the corrupted magic ritual that twisted both him and the dragons. Worse, he's now tied to a body that is the literal avatar of a star — a form that is becoming increasingly, catastrophically unstable. All of which means he's running out of time. After all, some stars fade — but others explode. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.
