Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 1944 sixteen black enlisted men gathered at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Illinois to begin a cram course that would turn them into the U.S. Navy's first African-American officers on active duty. The men believed they could set back the course of racial justice if they failed and banded together so all would succeed. Despite the demanding pace, all sixteen passed the course. Twelve were commissioned as ensigns and a thirteenth was made a warrant officer. Years later these pioneers came to be known as the Golden Thirteen, but at the outset they were treated more as pariahs than pioneers. Often denied the privileges and respect routinely accorded white naval officers, they were given menial assignments unworthy of their abilities and training. Yet despite this discrimination, these inspirational young men broke new ground and opened the door for generations to come. In 1986, oral historian Paul Stillwell began recording the memories of the eight surviving members of the Golden Thirteen. Later he interviewed three white officers who served with and supported the efforts of the men during World War II. This book collects the stories of those eleven men. Introduced by Colin L. Powell, they tell in dramatic fashion what it was like to be a black American.

Book excerpt: Over the centuries, Euclid Creek's torrents have drilled through bluestone and shale, carving deep gorges in a gentle landscape. Early Native Americans trekked the gorge rims here, forming an extensive trail network. When Moses Cleaveland came to survey the area in 1796, he and his men became involved in a labor dispute, which Cleaveland settled by granting the men a township straddling “the big crick.” They named it Euclid, in honor of the inventor of survey mathematics. Settlers arrived and named the trails Anderson, Chardon, Dille, Euclid, Glenridge, Green, Highland, and Mayfield. The creek powered their mills and carried their wine and quarried bluestone to distant markets. Villages began sprouting up throughout the forest. New modes of transportation defined eras of change in the watershed. Electrified rails brought summer resorts and country estates; automobiles ferried suburbanites to Tudor side streets; and eventually, Interstate highways funneled exurbanites into shopping centers. Two centuries later, the Euclid Creek watershed holds 68,000 residents in 11 municipalities: Beachwood, Euclid, Highland Heights, Lyndhurst, Mayfield Heights, Mayfield Village, Nottingham, Richmond Heights, Pepper Pike, South Euclid, and Willoughby Hills.

Book excerpt: Winsor McCay, the creator of Little Nemo in Slumberland, is internationally renowned as a pioneer in comics and animation. But author Ulrich Merkl’s dedicated sleuthing has unearthed a never-published strip by McCay that was lost following the artist’s untimely death. Titled simply Dino, it opens a surprising new window into McCay’s life and work and showcases his exquisitely beautiful and delicate delineations (exactingly reproduced from the original art). Merkl explores the influences McCay brought to the strip―including McCay’s own Gertie the Dinosaur animated shorts, the animation in 1933’s King Kong, and the growth of New York City from the Holland Tunnel to the Empire State Building ―and traces our love of dinosaurs and monster movies down through the decades. Breathtakingly designed, each page of this deluxe oversize volume is overflowing with amazing imagery, with more than 650 photographs and illustrations (more than 250 in color) ― most of them seen here for the first time in a century! An essential volume for everyone interested in the development of the comic strip ― and our never-ending fascination with dinosaurs!
